I'm sorry, I know that in the Japanese version Goku sounds like a man-child. Why do we like that, and want an English version of that? Vegeta hit puberty, why can't Goku? Lol.

I've found that, too. Sabat was a great Daimao, but an iffy Ma Junior.
Indeed.

If his performance were something like this, then the fight would be much more enjoyable to watch in English.

Because that's who Goku is...? And we generally like Goku, I think? And it has nothing to do with puberty. He's not praising Schemmel because someone made him inhale helium before takes. He's praising him because his character is a man-child as it's supposed to be. You might as well say, "Gee, I know Goku is supposed to be male, but why do we like that? Lunch was female, so why can't Goku?" I mean, you could do that with anything, but the traits of one character don't really have much bearing on the traits of an entirely different character.

Is that really what Goku is supposed to be? If I only read the manga, would I still get that vibe? I get Goku is a happy-go-lucky karate-bum....but a "man-child"?

Okay this example is an entire gender swap.....I don't think my question was as serious of a game changer as this one.

Yes, that was the reason I gave such an extreme example. Aside from some shared moments of Saiya stupidity, Goku and Vegeta are absolutely nothing alike. So saying that Goku should be more like this because Vegeta is more like this is about as extreme as suggesting a sex change.

And, yes, I definitely get a huge vibe of childlike innocence from Goku from the beginning to the end of the manga. I hesitate to use the term "man-child" only because Goku isn't a man for a huge chunk of the series.

Yeah, I don't think it was that bad. I mean, Cranz will always be bad as Chi-Chi (although that's probably more to do with the direction than the acting), but Schemmel's screaming definitely sounded genuine and Strait's delivery wasn't that stilted. Sabat's Ma Junior sounds like an ogre, though. I do think they need to redub Dragon Ball, even if it wasn't as bad as their dub for Z. Looking at what they did for Z Kai, I think they could do the same for DB.

I put some of the iffyness with Kuririn down to the animation. Seriously, imagine doing into the booth and trying to convey the emotion in an appropriate way while trying to sync up to that.

Yeah, they should since they redubbed Z via Kai so why not give the predecessor the same if not more justice. Plus, the Bardock and Trunks specials are in need of it too (big time). And hey, the dubbies still have the blue bricks so it's not at all like they'd be replaced. Though you could say the same with Kai and Z.

I haven't seen the scene in the original Japanese version, but I presume that Tanaka was able to. But yeah, those were some pretty weird expressions from Kuririn there.

Why would Tanaka have to sync to the animation? Don't they draw the pictures based on the actor's performance, like western animation?

(This is also one of the reasons why I sign a bit whenever people say that TFS are better than FUNi. Whether you think they are or not, they have a massive advantage in being able to re-edit the show to match the acting, rather than acting to match the show.)

No, it's animated before they record.

"You know, you don't have to hurt other people for amusement. Helping people can be fun, too. You should try it some time."

Goku preaching to Captain Ginyu. The original lines were him telling Ginyu to check on his scouter to see just how powerful he is.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Not only is it completely made up with no basis in the original script, but it paints Goku in the wrong light, like he's some pillar of morality.

Goku's not really the type to preach to his opponents.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.
