Is Fríeza the official name for Freeza in JPN products?

D.O.N Battle Stadium:

DBZ Burst Limit:

However,

DBK HSCF #19 Figure:

According to Wikipedia, it is spelled Freeza but it can be seen that in D.O.N Battle Stadium and DBZ Burst Limit is Frieza, so it's basically both?

I think it might depend on what you mean by official. "Son Gokou" has been used on official Japanese merchandise as well, but it's still pretty weird.
If TPP passes in your country it will be illegal for you to watch an imported DVD. Click here to learn more!

The Japanese aren't known for their consistent English spellings (no offense to the Japanese, of course).

That said, I doubt their use of the spelling "Frieza" is older than its use in English speaking countries.

In DBK BOX 4 there's no mention of Son, just this:

"Gokou" does sound and look weird, imo.

I think it wasn't until Battle Stadium D.O.N that the spelling "Frieza" showed up in a Japanese product. It might just be a case of the Japanese taking our spelling because they figure it's right...?

I can't tell what you're saying thanks to the word filters. Are you saying that Gokou isn't pronounced differently from Goku? Because normally, in romaji, "Ou" makes "Oh", not "U". Gokou would be "Gokō".

I think that Gokou is supposed to be looked at from English pronunciation. The "kou" is supposed to be pronounced like "you" and "caribou." If you just look at it as a romanization, then yes, it is definitely wrong.

What? Are you really saying that? The Japanese aren't just going to randomly come up with a new way to pronounce it.
In nothing I've ever heard have they pronounced as Gok-oh
just because it's spelled that way doesn't mean it's pronounced different.

I completely Agree with Pokewhiz

I'm not saying that I particularly like it at all as a spelling, I'm just saying that that's probably how they came up with it. I'd much prefer "Goku."

I agree it is wierd and on almost every piece of Japanese merchandise I've seen it's spelled that way.

Huh. I somehow missed a few posts when I made my last one. It was meant to be in reply to Pokewhiz.

I didn't say they did. I said that normally, when you see a Japanese word or name with "ou" in it, that means "ō". Of course I'm not saying they'd change the way Goku's name was pronounced--but if you didn't know who Goku was, saw it written that way, and knew how the Japanese pronounced things, you'd definitely pronounce it wrong by mistake. That's why I said it's weird.

Aren't those the only two instances where they spelled it with an "i"? Every guide book and such since then has stuck with the same ol' "Freeza" spelling, and even looking at the URL in his Sparking! METEOR bios, they all have the "freeza" spelling.

I think we can just chock them both up to: "game programmer doesn't know English, looks at American site, copies letters down, moves on with life".

Jump Ultimate Stars also had Frieza, unfortunately.

Enough said. We've seen how, outside of english dub community, Freeza is the standard.

Kinda amused by all the "Gokou sounds weird" talk, when it's being pronounced the same way over there despite how they romanize it.

The French, Spanish and Portuguese (plus any others I didn't list) use Freezer (Frizer) instead of Freeza (Friza).

Still closer to the origin than "Frieza", which makes no sense as an english spelling of the japanese aproximation of the english word "Freezer".

I'm more intrigued by those Kai images dboxkaifan posted that refer to a "2nd season DVD." Since when is actual Dragon Ball divided into seasons?
