Dragon Ball Z Kai more popular on DVD than Blu-ray?
I don't know but I tend to see people talk more about getting Kai on DVD than BD even though the PQ/AQ is better on BD they still prefer to go with DVD, possibly because, 1) No BDP and 2) consistent DVD collection as the owner already owns other DB content on DVD.
I've bought all Dragon Ball Z Kai Part Collections on Blu-ray (Part Eight is coming) and DVD being inferior to BD I don't quite get it why people would want to watch Kai in standard definition, maybe it's due to the reasons I mentioned earlier on.
DBZ Kai DVD version does have some improvements over the Blu-ray edition, for example, the DVD comes with two character pictures for each case while the BD has only one for each.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai more popular on DVD than Blu-ray?
Quite honestly, Kai does not look very good. It's rather soft. I wouldn't fault someone for choosing the Blu-ray version. A lot of people just don't think animation in general is worth it on BD. Though from what I've seen, the Blu-ray has been selling better. Maybe that's just here. One thing is, the DVDs have a bit more subdued colors that are more pleasing to the eye. The Blu-ray's colors are still good, though the DVDs' are a tad better. I don't think anyone would choose the DVD for that reason, but it's worth mentioning. One odd thing that I've noticed, the Blu-rays are often cheaper. I don't know what kind of sense that makes.
Also, that screencap isn't the full resolution. At its full size, the Blu-ray versions of the new opening, endings, and eyecatches blow the DVD out of the water.

I'm perfectly fine with what's on the Kai DVD's.
I'm not one of those who obsesses over how much Blu-Ray looks and sounds better than all other formats. I don't care, I just want to watch the content inside the disc.

I agree. You're not missing out on anything crazy. Sure it might look a little better but, it's not like playing Street Fighter II on Game Boy compared to playing Street Fighter II on SNES. You're getting basically the same experience.Gonstead wrote:I'm perfectly fine with what's on the Kai DVD's.

I bought the Parts on DVD so I could do the comparisons but bought the "season" sets on Blu-ray because they're what I'll be keeping in the long run. I think movies like say, Toy Story 3 would be better on Blu-ray over DVD, but not DBZK. But hey, to each his own.

I'm pretty sure people are buying them on DVDs because not everyone has the money to afford a Bluray player or a PS3. I have a 360 so its perfect and DVDs are a lot cheaper than Blurays.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai more popular on DVD than Blu-ray?
Ever since I found out about how Blu-ray discs are more scratch-resistant and how movies etc are kept at 24p no matter the region (since I happen to be one of the few that just can't stand PAL speedups), I've been more interested in replacing DVDs.
But back on-topic. I haven't got the sets myself but from what I've seen, the only thing that would benefit in video quality would be the opening/ending animations, eyecatchs and the content from Z episodes 73-80. Though for me if I had a choice, I would still go for Blu-ray mostly for the extra durability (as I mentioned above) since I'm skiddish about scratched DVDs (same reason I'm making custom Blu-ray discs for my Dragon Box sets) and even for the slight video upgrade.

Well, I'd say Namek arc and Frieza (I've come to like Frieza instead of Freeza, if it's cool, guys) arc are the best PQ (imo) that Dragon Ball Kai offered us, as for the Cell arc, I've seen some pretty weird animation inconsistencies, take this for example: http://youtu.be/SV8QiJUBsesBluezaBladeNZ wrote:and the content from Z episodes 73-80

Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai more popular on DVD than Blu-ray?
Wow that is bad, I've only seen up to episode 77 as I'm rebuilding the Yamamoto score for the dub track (I'm aware dbkaimusicrevivial is doing it too) so I've yet to see that. While the quality looks far better for those certain episodes on Blu-ray, it does unfortunately makes the reanimated bits in them stick out more as they appear too blurred judging by screenshots I've seen.dbboxkaifan wrote:Well, I'd say Namek arc and Frieza (I've come to like Frieza instead of Freeza, if it's cool, guys) arc are the best PQ (imo) that Dragon Ball Kai offered us, as for the Cell arc, I've seen some pretty weird animation inconsistencies, take this for example: http://youtu.be/SV8QiJUBses

We live in a widescreen era. That's why I go with DVD. At least that gives you an option to stretch to widescreen. When I pay hundreds of dollars for an widescreen HDTV, I want my shows to fit the whole screen. The Blu-Rays are a joke because of those black borders. It's a shame that Funimation has went so cheap on both releases though. I can't even read the episode lists on some of the DVD cases because the color choices were terrible. And with so much storage on a Blu-Ray disc, Funimation just had to make a widescreen version and give us the option in the menu. But until then, I'm stuck with DVD.

If you have indeed an HDTV you can zoom in the picture to make it look like 16:9, regardless of what it is (LD | BM | VCR | DVD | BD | GAME | PC).masterz13 wrote:We live in a widescreen era. That really is pointless and invalid when you have the option to do it yourself.
As for the 4x3 Blu-rays, they keep the whole image without cropping anything out, however, if you want it 16x9 do as I've said.

I actually wouldn't have minded if FUNi had given us the option to watch the actual widescreen version of Kai from the Japanese broadcast, with the panned and scanned scenes and slightly extra footage and such. Not that I don't like what we have better.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai more popular on DVD than Blu-ray?
I don't really want to get a TV series on Bluray just yet, the only Blurays I own right now are the Ghost in the Shell 2.0/Innocence double box, the Akira BD/DVD Steelbook and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
I plan on getting the season boxes for Kai eventually, maybe when I own a PS3 or Bluray player in my room, or hopefully have a proper desktop computer with a Bluray drive. One thing I like about DVDs is that I can just pop them right in my laptop and watch them anywhere in the house, and I didn't really want to pay extra for a laptop with a bluray drive when I wouldn't even be watching stuff in full HD.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai more popular on DVD than Blu-ray?
Just called into JB Hifi and they only had 1 copy of Kai part 7 on DVD while there were like 2 or 3 Blu-Ray copies on the shelf.
I guess the DVD's are more popular, at least in my area.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai more popular on DVD than Blu-ray?
While I haven't gotten any of the Kai releases, despite having adopted Blu-ray and will always choose a Blu-ray release over DVD unless a Blu-ray version simply does not exist, I ultimately chose the DVD release of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood due to this article.
Not being an expert on the mediums, I probably misinterpreted some of the info and may have been better of getting the Blu-ray, Then again, at the time I got Brotherhood, I had an older system which wouldn't have been able to take advantage of Blu-ray's superior quality.
Could something similar apply for Kai? If Brotherhood was animated at 540p and is a much more recent production than DBZ whose elements were used to make Kai, does that mean Kai is a form of "faux-HD"? Is Brotherhood (and, by extension, modern animation) actually limited because it is digitally recorded instead of captured on film?

Blu-ray preserves the proper aspect ratio. If it was produced for widescreen, it will be widescreen but if it was native 4:3 then it will be pillarboxed to prevent the picture from being distorted. It's just as wrong to crop a 4:3 program to widescreen as it is to crop a widescreen program to 4:3 pan and scan.masterz13 wrote: When I pay hundreds of dollars for an widescreen HDTV, I want my shows to fit the whole screen.
