It's be a hidden depth for parents or older viewers. Like kids don't need to know but when they find out they'll be slapping their forehand in realization. Plus, Mister Sampson sounds neat.

I think Mr. Savage would have actually fit. Before anyone suggests that parents would complain about the name, DC had a villain named Vandal Savage without anywhere near as much complaints. Indeed, his name was kept unaltered throughout the Justice League run (on Toonami IIRC), so I think Mr. Savage would have gone through without too many complaints.

ETA: That said, it would have been interesting for Vandal Savage and Garlic Jr. to meet in a bar and discuss their failed schemes of world domination.

I don't remember ever hearing a "Saturn" on Mr. Satan's Japanese pronunciation, plus, if they called him Mr. Saturn on the English dub it'd probably make some confusion with the Sega Saturn and whatnot.

Being that the only difference is that extended "ta" sound, if there were no visual references in the show (which there are plenty, as we know), it would've been an understandable misunderstanding on FUNimation's part. (...or if they wanted to change it to something less ridiculous than...what they went with)

Mr. Savage, or Mr. Anything for that matter, would have been terrible. Or at least would have bothered people here moreso than Hercule for one reason in particular. Hercule worked out because it didn't outright remove the name "Mr. Satan" from the canon. It supplemented it in it's unique way but they were still able to call him "Mr. Satan" when they felt appropriate without any internal conflict. Meanwhile, if they had used "Mr. X" then prepare for him to always be Mr. X. There's something about character names where it's just harder to change them once they've been established.

Mr. Savage would have been fun, though, if only for the Macho Man association. It would have made Videl's name kinda meaningless in the process but given how the guy behaves, the reference wouldn't be wholly inappropriate.

Otherwise, they should've used Mark Savage or Mark Hercule for that Matter. Mark, who Akira Toriyama unveiled Mr. Satan's real name in 2009's Shonen Jump interview, plays in the anagram word "akuma" (豪鬼, Gōki, lit. "Great Demon") rearranged into this word, "Mark" (マーク, Maaku), which essentially means, devil or demon. Akuma is also a SF Character name as well.

If you guys want, Mark is a good appropriate name.

I don't think Toriyama had come out and said that Mr. Satan's real name was "Mark" by the time FUNimation got round to dubbing the late Cell arc.

They could've used Mr. Satyr. In American English, it's pronounced with a long "a" sound, so it's actually very similar to "Satan".

Calling him "Mr. Savage" would have been better because it reminds me of "Macho Man" Randy Savage. There are people who's real last names are "Savage," so are kids not supposed to say their own last name because it's "too violent?"

I think it's less of sounding violent, and more because it reminded guys of Macho Man. They probably thought the jokes were too easy.
