"Mark" is the only English name?
Now, I know Toriyama said this after the Dragon Ball manga had ended, but it was just something I'd been thinking about. Don't you think it's odd that Mr. Satan's real name, "Mark", is the only real-life English given name in the series?

Are the Red Ribbon army members countable as well? There are names based of colors used in real life, right?

I think "Trunks" is an English name. Also "Briefs".

No, I specified "real-life English given names", or at least those that are relatively well-known and in usage. I mean, how many people do you know that are called "Blue" or "Trunks"?Tanooki Kuribo wrote:I think "Trunks" is an English name. Also "Briefs".

"Red" is a reasonably well-known name, at least.Piccolo Daimao wrote:SHINOBI-03 wrote:Are the Red Ribbon army members countable as well? Well, what I mean is that "Mark" is the only or most "normal"-sounding one of the lot. The only person I can think of whose name is "Red" is that guy in The Shawshank Redemption, and that was a nickname based on his surname.Adamant wrote:"Red" is a reasonably well-known name, at least.

Red Buttons? Redd Foxx? Family Guy's Blue Harvest special did a whole series of jokes on this!

Re: "Mark" is the only English name?
I think you all are missing the point. The point is that Mark is the most common American sounding name in Dragonball. Therefore, by association with Mr. Satan, America is the devil.

There was Gohan's classmate "Angela", and Piccolo's driving instructor "Cynthia".
But those were filler.

Was the name "Jimmy Firecracker" a dub name? It was given for the news broadcaster at the Cell Games. Other than that I can't think of anyone else.

Yes. It very, very, very much was.Insertclevername wrote:Was the name "Jimmy Firecracker" a dub name?
There's also the "Final Flash" and "Big Bang Attack", though they're not character names.

Did Toriyama specifically say that the name was with a letter K or C? Marc or Mark?

Re: "Mark" is the only English name?
He did not -- it's written out in katakana in the interview transcription (マーク), so that bit of transliteration is up to you.dbboxkaifan wrote:Did Toriyama specifically say that the name was with a letter K or C? Marc or Mark?

Re: "Mark" is the only English name?
Red Buttons was a friend's nickname he adopted and performed under, and he was born Aaron Chwatt. Redd Foxx was just a stage name too; his real name was John Elroy Sanford.Gaffer Tape wrote:Red Buttons? Redd Foxx? Family Guy's Blue Harvest special did a whole series of jokes on this!
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. So I guess "Mark" would be the only real-life English given name in the manga that isn't based on an actual real-life name.JulieYBM wrote:Jackie from Jackie Chun? :{
I'd say it's "Mark", if it's a pun on "akuma" (which is partly where "Akkuman" got his name from), which has a "k" in it.VegettoEX wrote:He did not -- it's written out in katakana in the interview transcription (マーク), so that bit of transliteration is up to you.dbboxkaifan wrote:Did Toriyama specifically say that the name was with a letter K or C? Wasn't there someone in the Red Ribbon named "Violet"? (Might've been filler)

I checked through all of them and they were either stage names/nicknames or some Native American chief title/name, which doesn't count.Adamant wrote:Have this list, then:Piccolo Daimao wrote:Red Buttons was a friend's nickname he adopted and performed under, and he was born Aaron Chwatt. And yes, there was someone named Colonel Violet or something, in both the manga and anime.

Re: "Mark" is the only English name?
How about Killa? You could romanize that as Kira, which is a real name. I guess that's not really the intent, though.
Re: "Mark" is the only English name?
Well, there was Murasaki, and I dunno, maybe that was his name in a dub?Rukura wrote:Wasn't there someone in the Red Ribbon named "Violet"? (Might've been filler)
