While I'm a fan of the both the English and Japanese version, I have a friend who will not watch anything to do with the Dragonball franchise if it's in Japanese. and that aggravates me so much! because he's missing out on some great stuff like the Jump Special and others. He's just like ''If it's not in English it doesn't exist'' Ugh....Saiyajin no Tatsujin wrote:I can't help laughing on the inside and thinking "what a damn fool!" whenever I hear someone saying how much the original Japanese voice acting and/or soundtrack sucks.

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Yeah. Unlike criticism, we shouldn't really justify bashing for the sake of bashing by giving it any attention. No amount of intelligent debate is going to sway a basher's point of view and doing so will only serve to infuriate and frustrate the fans of the series. Not worth the energy.Gaffer Tape wrote:I personally don't mind "bashing" of Dragon Ball.
I don't necessarily think comments about Nozawa, Sabat, Schemmel, etc. are "bashing" unless they are actually phrased along the line of "Sabat effing sucks!" whereas "Nozawa is awful as Goku" comes across more as an expressed opinion (which we're all entitled to even if we don't always agree) based on how it's written.
In the end, the entire point of bashing is to get a reaction, so by responding in any way we're giving the bashers what they want. Who cares what they say? So what if they hate the series for whatever reason? We enjoy and appreciate it, that's all that matters.

It really bothers me when the purists bash the dub saying "that's not what it was meant to be" or when others bash the jap dub with "the music sucks!"
It's childish...(mind you we are watching a childrens tv show...)
I myself prefer the dub and us broad cast music, however I still respect and enjoy the original Japanese voices and score. thus out of all the DVD sets I bought dragonbox because of my respect for its release and IMHO the season sets were just a really bad decision by Funi but I know others that do enjoy it. Dragonball Z is what the viewer takes from it, they can enjoy it any way they want it being "right" or "wrong". Who do others think they are saying you can't enjoy something unless it's the way they prefer it.

"If you prefer or like the Japanese your a weeabo"
I wonder if people even know what weeabo means since that kind of labeling doesn't work in this context.
"Kai sucks cause of voice changes and the acting is terrible"
I seriously wonder if people even know what good acting is anymore. The new english cast (even though most is still the same) is doing a waaaay better job now then back in the 90's. I don't care if people prefer the funi dub or ocean, but please don't bash kai for terrible reasons. I can't say much for the Japanese cast since I only watched kai all the way through. I have seen several parts of the original japanese but not episode by episode. I think both are great but I can't fairly judge the z and kai japanese.

It's when you hold a strong bias towards any facet from Japanese.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

As I understand it, it means "Wapanese" (a.k.a. "Wannabe Japanese) and refers to a person who prefers Japan and Japanese things over their own culture. Acting Japanese when you're not counts as that, I suppose, but its uses are broader than that alone.
Do I agree that favoring the Japanese version of Dragon Ball makes you "wannabe Japanese"? Of course not. It's a hyperbolic insult with no logical grounding. It's like saying: "You like the color green; that means you're a hippy." But...it's supposed to be a stupid, derogatory term, so I don't think they're using it in the wrong context.

Well I guess weeabo is another word with several meanings. Honestly the people who use it are biased to the english dub making them hypocritical to call anyone else biased to support their point. Opinions are fine but don't bash on something cause you don't like it, unless there is a legitimate reason. The one's I hear are complete bullshit.DBZAOTA482 wrote:It's when you hold a strong bias towards any facet from Japanese.

I like Ocean dub over all other dubs and think they did a stellar job in both music, voice acting, the script not so much. What other dub has been give internet notoriety, its own meme and been mention on Oprah's show ?

I'm sorry, but given that you took that one line out of context, I can't quite tell if you think you're agreeing with me or not. That is, what you said seem to be pretty much what I said too, but I can't tell if you were saying that to refute the one sentence you quoted or to affirm the entire post... or vice versa for that matter!OutlawTorn wrote:Yeah. I'm going to use English as the example as it is my native language, so "weeaboo" isn't just liking something because it is Japanese or even preferring the Japanese version, rather it is if you begin using Japanese terms when they're not really appropriate. Such as calling your teacher "Moore-sensei" instead of "Mr. Moore" or obsessively adding "sama" and "chan" or any other Japanese honourifics/words in their every day speech which aren't used in English.Bussani wrote:As I understand it, it means "Wapanese" (a.k.a. Yeah, I left out the kids manga not being one of your sacred cows part of the comment but I agree with what you said. Bashers, at their core, just bash to get a rise out of people so while it may be annoying, the worst thing we could do is "feed the trolls" as it were.Gaffer Tape wrote:OutlawTorn wrote:I'm sorry, but given that you took that one line out of context, I can't quite tell if you think you're agreeing with me or not.Gaffer Tape wrote:I personally don't mind "bashing" of Dragon Ball.

That doesn't quite match the definitions I've read, but it's a stupid made up term anyhow, so...yeah.OutlawTorn wrote:I'm going to use English as the example as it is my native language, so "weeaboo" isn't just liking something because it is Japanese or even preferring the Japanese version, rather it is if you begin using Japanese terms when they're not really appropriate. I personally find this to be a good definition.Tanooki Kuribo: Maybe I'm old, out of the loop, or just not hip anymore. But what's "weeaboos" ?!

I think the people who say those type of things about the Japanese version can't appreciated it. Just like the people who don't want to watch foreign films because they are not in English.
