I always assumed that Movie #5 took place in a timeline where Gokuu actually killed Freeza on Namek and then returned to Earth earlier than in the main continuity, which may explain why Gohan looks just like he did on Namek (in both age and appearance, yet he looked older when Trunks came to Earth) and, aside from dramatic effect, Gokuu doesn't seem to have gotten the hang of transforming into SS at will yet.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

That's (king) cold.
I think it's likely the writers didn't know about King Cold(or Freeza's assault on Earth for that matter), when they wrote the script. The movie came out(20/7-91) less than 3 weeks after the reveal of King Cold(1/7-91).

So it's no surprise some people get the idea that in the backstory to this film, Goku killed Freeza on Namek, since it could have been written that way due to their lack of knowledge of future events.

The movies all seem to follow that premise. "What would the next adventure be if the series ended right now." And then they just go and tell that story, albeit with a few creative liberties like Gohan's tail. Of all the movies, Cooler is probably one of the easier ones to reconcile with the series.

I love how nobody bothered replying to the second part of my post. Did they address it in the last teamfourstar podcast or something? Because I'm not listening through all that bull poop for one piece of information.
This will never not be my sig:
VegettoEX wrote:"Snoop Lion" is just a character he's playing for his reggae album and documentary. Him saying that it's his new name is all part of the character.

No one is required to respond to any question/topic you bring up. Also, while I can understand not wanting to listen to our 'cast, calling it bullshit was sorta unecessasarilly rude, don't you think?

We plan on calling the movies essentially whatever we want. We thought Revenge of Cooler sounded best. That's the long and short of it.

I called it bull poop instead of shit because I was trying to be as benign as possible in my jest, my apologies if it was still too far. I didn't expect anyone involved in the show to respond, just joking about the forum in general being selective in its response. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it'll be hilarious either way regardless of the title, I was just curious about that one aspect.

They had to repeat Funimation's mistake of calling him "Cooler" and not "Coola"?

Come on. You can have Freezer and Cooler or Freeza and Coola, but Freeza and Coola is just inconsistent.

I get where you're coming from, man. But this is one of those instances where it's just too ingrained in the English fandom to try and deviate. We're willing to stick firm to Freeza and not Frieza, but Coola is just -not- used -at all- in the English fandom.

Goku also calls Frieza "Freezer" anyway.

All this talk of Freeza's family reminded me....are you guys ever gonna do Episode of Bardock? Is that decision dependent on whether or not FUNimation releases it in America (like the other specials)?

This is one of those cases where I have no way of knowing how true that is. I guess so? Pretty much nothing produced in the official English merchandise arena after 1998 has any amount of "ingrained" in me. "Cooler" always seems "wrong" to me, because my exposure to it is so limited. Every single year I get taken aback if I toss a North American release of a video game in and see all these weird character names.

Hey, "Aeris" was pretty well ingrained, but they made that correction...

It was used for years before Funimation ever licensed movies 5 or 6.

But yeah, I get it.

(Wait, what do the subtitles on those releases call him?)

And created what might be the biggest broken base in Final Fantasy history in the process. This situation is particularly bad because you can't so much as mention the character without inciting a war. It's gotten to the point that many websites just do an "Aerith/Aeris" kind of thing. It's even worse than Eggman/Robotnik because at least with the latter it was easy enough to reconcile the two names as Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.

Coola would be easier to switch to if only by virtue of the history. Despite not being especially mainstream, there were enough people exposed to the series years before FUNimation. Meanwhile, with a video game localization, you don't have the benefit of time. Everyone plays it when it's still essentially brand new give or take a few months. But names are always a funny thing. They tend to hold firmer with people than other terminology. In Chrono Trigger, Magus's minions were called "Mystics." In the revised DS script they were called the technically more accurate "Fiends." The name "Magus" stuck, however, despite it being just as much a Woolseyism as "Mystics" was. That's just an interesting quirk that hits home to the issue. Names just matter more, it seems. I guess because names are so tied to a character's identity that renaming them tends to rattle a person's perception of who they actually are, even if the change is arguably for the better.

The thing is, given that Abridged is a parody, it's not quite in a position to be making decisions that would have been good for what it is parodying. There's a lot of meta jokes that go on in Abridged and it's all the better for it. The Freeza/Freezer gag, for example. And calling the character "Cooler" could be just as important to a punchline as Coola, maybe even moreso given the meta of it. The decisions these guys make have to be made for the benefit of Abridged specifically. Not Dragon Ball Z. And if they feel that "Cooler" is better for Abridged than Coola, then more power to them. I studied comedy in college and you'd be amazed at how deliberate and calculated good comedy is. It's why I can't praise the editing enough. Abridged's sense of timing is flawless.
