I was browsing through wikipedia (JP) and it turns out that the voice actor who played Trunks was also the voice of Donatello at one point in the Japanese dub of Ninja Turtles. Trunks' hair is purple and Donatello's headband is...well, you get the drift.
Just thought I'd give it a mention.

Well, Trunks really is intelligent. He's well-mannered.
He can operate the time machine well enough to pinpoint the duplicate's age. He can tell if a bug hatched from it's cocoon long ago or recently. He can also read blueprints, something the likes of Krillin would find "hard stuff".
It wouldn't be silly to say that he has to be a pretty clever guy to enjoy working on machines. So considering these things, especially in the DB universe, I'd say he's a very intelligent guy.
