Lots of you say you dislike DBZ filler, so why is the opinion on this site regarding Kai negative? Is it just because of the soundtrack getting switched?

Who says it's negative in general? And at least it got rid of a lot of the Goku vs Freeza fight. Not all but enough so it wouldn't drag on for so long.

It's not that we hate Kai, it's just that a lot of us think it's a little...disappointing.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

The only thing dissapointing for me was the placement of the replacement score. I guess that ruined it. But with the original score its far from a dissapointment it was a lot more exciting than DBZ imo, even though I knew what was going to happen.

I think that one of the problem that lot of fans have with Kai is the fact that many of the Japanese performances don't live up to the original performances. In addition, there were a lot of replacements.

The removal of filler is just one aspect of why someone would or would not enjoy Kai. For me:

- coming from an era of anime being edited, being given a version of a show for its anniversary that is edited down (for both content and actual running time / material) is like being kicked in the groin and laughed at all the way to the bank

- voice actor replacements (some understandable, such as Hirotaka Suzuoki, and others of the stunt variety, like Aya Hirano)

- music debacle all around (Yamamoto a great idea at first, composed a limited soundtrack, got himself in hot water, had the entire thing stripped out, and then replaced with a limited version of the original score)

And that's just for starters. If I want to watch it without filler, I'll watch it without filler -- by fast-forwarding. Or by reading the manga.

To get back to the actual question at hand (let's try to keep it there!), filler in the first TV series always felt more natural to me. Stuff felt less padded-out internal to the original material, extra mini-arcs were just that (short and sweet), etc. DBZ only got two mini-arcs, and while you can say what you want about their quality, they're hardly the worst offenders in terms of... well, pretty much everything that "filler" is known for when it's tossed around pejoratively.

I can think back fondly on Ginkaku and Kinkaku, wedding dress hunting, etc. Bulma and the crab? Fake Namek? Not so much.
