One Piece-Dragon Ball question (One Piece spoiler)
One Piece-Dragon Ball question (One Piece spoiler)
Okay so Dragon Ball was divided into 2 series. The first series is called Dragon Ball, the later added a Z. DBZ came after a time skip.
However, OP had a big time skip too.... but, they didn't divide it into series.
Why'd they decide to keep OP as one long, continuous series instead of "dividing it" into a "new" series like DB-Z did? And why was DB divided into DBZ to begin with?

I dunno, but with Naruto they divived in two series. I suppose it may be to hype the series, and give the sense of something new for an adience that has been losing interest. On the other hand, maybe the distribuitions rights must be renewed if the series is given a different name?

Re: One Piece-Dragon Ball question (One Piece spoiler)
Someone else will be able to explain it better no doubt (it's probably even on the site somewhere), but from what I remember it was more or less that they (meaning Toei) just wanted to separate the series. And from what I recall, it was Toriyama who suggested the 'Z' subtitle, since he felt that he was wrapping up at the time. It just proved hilariously wrong.
Don't quote me on this though, my memory is terrible.
As far as One Piece goes, I had actually hoped they would split it in two. The series is already insanely long, longer than all of DB/Z/GT/Kai's episode count put together, so I'd been sort of hoping they'd have ended the first anime and come back with 'One Piece: New World' or something.

Oh wow.... I know it passed DBZGT a while ago, but is it really more than Kai?
What's the episode total for DBZGTKAI? I know OP is 573 since I'm watching it right now.

The anime staff wanted a bit of an image change, so they decided on a split and asked Toriyama for a name for the new anime series. Toriyama thought things were fine the way they were, but came up with the name "Dragon Ball Z" for the anime. That's why in Japan (and many other countries where the series has been localized) the manga is labelled "Dragon Ball" from start to finish, with no "Z" division. This story gets told in the anime guide Son Goku Densetsu and a few other Toriyama interviews.GS7X7 wrote:And why was DB divided into DBZ to begin with?
Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?

We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

Hmm...just calculated it and with Kai added on (what we have so far of it anyway), it brings the DB franchise up to 607 episodes.GS7X7 wrote:Oh wow.... I know it passed DBZGT a while ago, but is it really more than Kai?

So I guess they haven't passed DB with Kai included just yet after all. My bad. ^_^;

If we add in the Majin Boo arc episodes we'll be up to around six hundred fifty soon, too. One Piece still has two years before it's well ahead of Dragon Ball.Gyt Kaliba wrote:Hmm...just calculated it and with Kai added on (what we have so far of it anyway), it brings the DB franchise up to 607 episodes.GS7X7 wrote:Oh wow.... OP is awesome. Unlike some shows, it doesn't have sucktacular filler despite how long it's been on the air.
But as Toei's number one cash cow at the moment, it makes sense it gets the golden treatment.
Maybe that's why DB-Z generally had great filler?

Re: One Piece-Dragon Ball question (One Piece spoiler)
'Filler' is good. One Piece suffers from a lack of it. One Piece, aside from the past two films, has gotten nowhere near the gold treatment for years. Dragon Ball Z, but comparison, did.GS7X7 wrote:OP is awesome. Unlike some shows, it doesn't have sucktacular filler despite how long it's been on the air.

What? OP Movie 4 was freaking epic. 2 was pretty sweet too and 3 had that Lion-King vibe to it. What about the first 52 eps? Or Sabaody to time skip? Or the flashback to Luffy's past before he grew up? TB anyone?
Those were all amazing and phenomenal, and there's plenty more in between.
