Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.
Gyt Kaliba wrote:Actually...okay, Pan was roughly 4 years old at the end of DBZ, right? That means she has to have been conceived roughly 5 years prior to that. There's a 10 year gap between Buu's defeat and that ending, where this movie takes place sometime in-between...that actually doesn't leave THAT much room. So I'm really beginning to like the theory that maybe this movie is kind of a lead-in or just around the time of Gohan and Videl's wedding.
You wouldn't think this would be too long after Buu's defeat, since Goten and Trunks barely look any older. Of course, Goku stayed a midget well into his teen years, so...who knows...
*facepalms* Knew I forgot something to consider in that. Thanks. This would seem to be pretty shortly after Buu's defeat based on them, but yeah, there is the factor of how Goku himself aged to consider I guess.
Hmm...is it probably safe to assume this movie at least takes place after the Jump special, if nothing else?
It's at least some months after Buu has been 'forgotten' by the earthlings (assuming they only used the first wish), since the Dragon Balls are active again.
I'd say it's after the special.

It's already started on Youtube
Also I just thought of something (though It may have been discussed before)
Birusu is awaken because of Freeza getting killed by a Super Saiyajin. So this is all Future Trunks' fault?
I think it was more because Goku defeated Freeza. But yeah, if you want the guy who killed Freeza, then you gotta look at Trunks.
I can see DBZ abridged blaming Trunks as a joke for their predicament.
Trunks might feel depressed that people say Goku did it when he finished off a stronger Freeza.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!
Spoiler:
Doctor. wrote:I've explained before, I'll just paraphrase myself.
Power levels establish tension and drama. People who care about them (well, people who care about them in a narrative) don't care about the big numbers or the fancy explosions. If you have character A who's so much above character B, who's the main character, you're gonna be left wondering how in the hell character B, the character we're supposed to care and root for, is going to escape the situation or overcome the odds. It makes us emotionally invested.
If character B doesn't escape the situation in a believable way that's consistent with previous events, then that emotional investment is gone. It was pointless tension, pointless drama made just to suck in the viewer. It has no critical value whatsoever. The audience is left believing that the author can just create whatever scenarios he wants and what happens to the characters is decided by whatever the author wants to happen, regardless of the events that happened in the story. Which, in fairness, is what happens, but the audience wants to be fooled. The audience wants to know that the world they're following has rules. That the world they're invested in isn't going to bend to external factors that are irrelevant to them.
An author can do whatever he wants with the characters, that's not false. But the author should also have the responsibility to make sure it fits in cohesively with the other events in the narrative he has created.

So how do you explain this?

Family Guy is non-canon to everything and not correct about anything.
As for the trailer, I'm even more psyched! To be honest, I think animation looks amazing! The art itself has that "shiny" factor that has been used since around Budokai 2, but I've become accustomed to it now. If I had other problems, I'd say a slightly darker color palette would have made it look more "movie-like" as opposed to an extra in a video game. That said, the trailer looks great and the movie is shaping up to be pretty good! Let's hope they can stretch out a good story for 90+ minutes!

Maybe Freeza briefly died after fighting Goku, but was able to be revived by the gadgetry? Brought back from death, undergoing painful rehabilitation... then getting cut in half by a teenager.

I didn't even notice that one was missing.
It's funny because those promotional Dragon Ball pens lack the 4-star Ball. I'm sensing a potential plot point, maybe.
Maybe Pilaf has 6 dragon balls but Goku had the 4th and they didn't know where it was. But Goku's ball started to react because Pilaf's dragonballs were near by so they find them (when Pilaf is away) and jack them and make a wish
Freeza was defeated by Goku. The battle they fought was presented as a titanic struggle not for control over the universe or anything like that, but to see who the stronger fighter was.
What Trunks did was different. He assassinated Freeza and killed his father in cold blood.

I find it extremely hard to believe that Gohan couldn't find the time to transform in the 10 minutes he stalled Boo for. Or was it 20? I can't remember if Boo said 10 minutes have passed or his fusion has 10 minutes left, but either way Gohan stalled him for quite some time.
In fact, remember when he broke out of the galactic donuts? Perfect time to use Super Saiyan, since he was trying as hard as he could to break out of it.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!
What we know from the plot summary is that Bilus awakens, and hears rumors about Freeza being defeated. There's nothing about Freeza's defeat being the reason for him waking up in the first place.
The summary also says this takes place "several years" after the battle with Boo. The JSAT was specifically set two years after the battle with Boo, so...probably the movie will be later than that, but of course it depends on what they mean by "several".
Herms wrote:OK, what we know from the plot summary is that Bilus awakens, and hears rumors about Freeza being defeated. There's nothing about Freeza's defeat being the reason for him waking up in the first place.
Good point.
So he hears Freeza is defeated and this could be either Goku who did defeat but not kill him or Trunks who killed him.
Now, perhaps they don't know it's trunks because he came from the future. But does that mean if we go to Trunks original timeline..would that mean at some point Burusu would wake up in that timeline? That would be interesting. Granted I've never seen the Trunks Special so I can't say much on it
Does trunks kill Freeza at any point in that timeline (before he goes back). Does frieza kill the Z fighters and leave?

Why is Pilaf alive? He is a villain and quite frankly this lack of attention to detail on Toriyama's part pisses me off .

I thought this was a problem as well, until Herms and others cleared it up. The wish was to bring back those except for "really evil" people, so Pilaf being returned to life isn't really a problem. He's certainly not a good guy, but not evil enough to be excluded from the wish.

You'd need someone more familiar with the Japanese version to give you the quote. Maybe ask the translation corner what the wording on the wish was?

I'm actually reading as few plot points as I can... I just saw the debate over Freeza's death and threw my two cents in.
