Site Layout Update

Post by Hujio » Mon Dec 10, 2012 2:20 am

We're only eight months into this grand collaborative project, and I'm happy to introduce version 1.1 of the Kanzenshuu layout!

Please be sure to refresh your browser!

The layout is about 90% exactly the same as before, with a few minor tweaks and adjustments. The majority of the updates were scripting improvements for functionality and usability of the site proper, which were intended to be done before the site launched. If you come across anything that appears to be wrong, or any odd bugs, please let me know (preferably in this topic). If you think something is wonky, try refreshing your browser first before posting. I've tested the updates in Mozilla Firefox 16, Google Chrome 23, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 9. If you're using an older version of one of these browsers, it is recommended you update it to ensure the site is rendered correctly. Also, for all you Mac people, how does everything look in Safari? I've yet to test it there, so any feedback would be appreciated.

Here's a run-down of the updates included:
  • News posts can now be shared directly from the site on your favorite social media network (Facebook, Google+, & Twitter).
  • Most recent news is now listed on each page of the site.
  • Left and right sidebars have had a slight facelift; now completely CSS based.
  • Improved search functionality; can now search site content, forum topics, and news from any page.
  • A navigation bar now affixes the top of the page when you go beyond the main navigation menu; links pull you back up the main navigation menu.
  • Main navigation menu has been partially re-scripted on back-end to improve performance.
  • Contact form has been moved to the main navigation menu; no longer opens in shadowbox window, but still accessible from each page.
  • Links to the forum from the main site now link to the forum when you're logged on and link to the forum rules when logged out.
  • A link to the top of the page now follows you down the page as you scroll (for your convenience).
  • Removed needless clutter in scripting and template files; converted numerous elements from hard coded HTML to CSS.
The next global update to the layout should include a mobile version, so look forward to that... at some point.

And now I can get back to working on content. :P

I see a gray box on the top of the page. Is that normal or not?

Yeah, something weird happens when you first visit the front page. Everything is pushed down the page quite a bit, leaving a big grey area with not much on it at the top.

It becomes normal again after refreshing, oddly. Oh, but the user panel seems to be broken.

It just means you haven't loaded the new CSS or Javascript file. Try refreshing the page or clearing your browser's local temporary cache.
Bussani wrote:It becomes normal again after refreshing, oddly.
Refreshing overwrites the old CSS file, which which was missing the script that handles the new stuff at the top.

That's an ongoing issue, which I'm hoping to resolve shortly.

I preferred the old, simple "panel headers" (obviously that's not how they're actually called). That white color somehow doesn't "flow" with the gray background, for me anyway.
And I still beg you to change the header image to either a Toriyama-drawn Goku or Shenlong with face visible or... just... JUST CHANGE IT!

The navigation bar that appears once you scroll down far enough; it's neat! Nice work, Hujio.

I agree. The only thing that might make me like it better is if it were black to mirror the site's static navigation bar from under the header. Also, opposite the "Top" button, I think it might be nice if there was a "Bottom" button so that you can quickly access the bottom franchise links, like when on an iPod and you can't tap the "End" button on the keyboard.

I like this idea! But how about I take it just one step farther? A top of page button, a bottom of page button, a previous page button, and a home button. Give 'em a go, because I've gone ahead and integrated them into the site layout.

You're welcome. I've been meaning to do it for a while, but held off in anticipation of this larger update.

This neat up-down-home-back piece of wizardry magic would be great on those long image-heavy forum pages. Maybe as an optional user setting, as I might be the only one with this view.

And the way the Contact Form now opens within the navigation bar is very slick, and very pretty! Much kudos for all the updates!

Nice forums layout! Great color schemes. Looking good! :)

Any chance you could go back to using old smileys, like the ones on the main site's comment section?

The new layout took me by surprise. It's going to take sometime to get used too.

Just want to clarify that the thread you're reading and responding to right here is about the greater website and styling updates made to it during December 2012. This thread over here is about forum styling upgrades.
