Broly - Perhaps the original villain of movie 12?

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Sat Jan 05, 2013 1:41 pm

So, I was watching bits and pieces of movie 11 last night. Don't really know why, but one thing stuck with me. At the end Kaio tells Goku that Broly is running amuck in Hell and ask that him and Paikuhan take care of it...

Now, I know that might just be a throw away line just for the sake of ending the movie on a bit of a silly note. But as we all know, in movie 12, Goku and Paikuhan do end up going to Hell and a bunch of old villains make a cameo appearance.

Image

I know there's no proof ANYWHERE, and we will never know the truth. But do you think? Maybe movie 12 had to be re-worked after movie 11 didn't shine as bright as the other DBZ movies? I mean by this point Broly would have officially been dead so, what better way to continue the fight if both Goku and Broly are dead. What do you think?

I could see this happening. Imo, I think maybe it would've been too much Brolli at that point, but I would not put it past Toei. (Brolli and Paragas kidnap Goku in one of the Kai stage shows; Toei does like to use him.) I mean, not only would it be the 4th Brolli movie, but they'd possibly be fighting 2 Brollis (the original and the clone). That's a lot of broccoli.
It would've given people clammoring for Brolli vs Gogeta that match they've wanted to see though.
Also, as if Vegeta didn't have it rough enough in Movie 12, the return of the anxiety-attack he'd likely have if it was Brolli he and Goku ran into down there would probably make things even more uncomfortable for him.

I didn't really like how Brolli became a silent villain in Movie 10; in Movie 8 he had dialogue and could actually express himself the few times he felt like it. I'm more open to Movie 8's version of Brolli because of that.
On hiatus.

My main concern with Broly is that he was overused, but badly overused.

Like you, I like the movie 8 version more, he was an interesting concept, that of the invincible, complete psychopath. Kinda like an equivalent to Carnage from Spider-Man, which was new for Dragon Ball. It was good for one movie, it wouldn't have worked to use him the same way again (they shouldn't have used him again at all).

In movie 8, he transformed into his most powerful form right away, KO-ed all characters in a few minutes being undamaged, then KO-ed them again in a few minutes - not knowing what it's like to respect the opponent and hold back, as mentionned by Goku who has never faced such a straightforward psycho before -, to finally be destroyed only thanks to the equivalent of a fivesome-fusion blow (probably more than it would have taken, cause I don't see him as being as powerful as many people think).
But in movie 10, the very concept of the character was ruined. Instead of being that unstoppable force that comes at you to kill you in one hit just because it's fun to hurt, torture, mutilate and destroy... he's now like a nice dude taking time to play with the kids with a lower form and unagressive behavior, getting peeed on, acting mostly like an empty robot/zombie (still knows how to say "Kakarotto" though, perhaps the only word he remembers), etc... He lost all his assets and charm, becoming a flat, boring villain.

Reusing him was a bad idea. But reusing him and destroying the things that made him somewhat interesting in the first place was definately a terrible move.
So I'm glad they changed their minds if they really intended on Broly being in a fourth film (even though I think that line at the end is some sort of joke - or hope for his fans -, like he's always going to come back again and again in many forms and places for many reasons.

Hmmm...I thought I'd heard something about this before. Something about an early drawing of Gogeta with a note saying "his enemy is...Broli?". But looking around I can't find anything about it.

Huh. I've never thought of this before for some reason.

On the one hand, this sounds like a really cool idea, having two seemingly unrelated movies actually tie in together rather than just bringing the villain back again, as the second Cooler and the second and third Broly movies did. So in that way it could be fun. On the other hand, a fourth Broly movie...dear lord. I can't even imagine how the fanbase would rage nowadays, given all the hate for the character.

Though, this does bring up another question I've wondered about before. The Broly that Goten and Trunks fight in the third film is technically a clone of Broly, instead of Broly himself, right? So...why is it only after the clone is killed that Broly is said to be causing chaos in Hell? Shouldn't he have already been doing that? He's already dead technically. Or did the clone automatically receive the same soul, and kind of...still was Broly after all? Because if not, then it just seems weird, and opens up the possibility of there being TWO Brolys in Hell...a truly terrifying idea.

Woah, if this is true maybe Gogeta fighting Broli in the Dragon Ball Z 3 opening was a nod to this idea? After all, Yamamuro Tadayoshi would have been involved in the early stages of this movie and he was the animation supervisor for that opening...hmm...

Hmm, now that you mention it... If there was two Broly's in Hell and they fused, perhaps this is where Goku gets the idea to fuse with Vegeta. A two on two fight seems fair. I may be looking too much into it but, the name "Rebirth of Fusion" seems to fit THAT story line better than the Janemba one. But then again, why wouldn't they change the movie title if the movie was re-worked to omit the Broly story.

I vote for "Brorolili". Or maybe "Brolilorb".

Uh...Anyway, I really doubt there were ever any plans for that, amusing as it would be. I hope this doesn't end up another Internet rumor.

And to think I was going to be lazy and suggest just 'Super Broly'.

Calling it now - the next saga in Dragon Ball Z AF Hoshi will be about Brorolili.

...Is it wrong of me that I'm morbidly curious to hear how that name would sound in Japanese? The whole 'r' and 'l' thing would BUTCHER that. Ha!

@ Chuquita - It's scary how well it really does write itself.

Somebody made it to the end of Movie 11?!

No, I was watching bits and pieces of it. I don't think anyone has watched it fully in one sitting. Perhaps this is why no one has brought up this theory before.

I've made it to the end of movie 11 at the very least 3 times - once when I first borrowed it years ago, again when I got my own copy for the first time, and then again when I re-watched everything in subtitled form. I've also survived Evolution twice - once on my own, and again making my girlfriend suffer it with me.

...Maybe there's something to these accusations of masochism after all. :P

Maybe Janemba was Brolli reincarnated? Just a thought.

Instead of the 2 Broly's fusing... what if they were duking it out with each other in Hell?

Once they see Goku, they both forget each other and go to attack him.

I've always assumed the line was written to poke fun of the fact that Broly has been in so many dbz movies at that point.
