Dragon Ball - The Musical

Post by Sinestro » Sat Jan 19, 2013 6:19 pm

I'm shocked no one's done this on Youtube.

I sort of fancy myself a bargain-basement Weird Al. (I've done this sort of thing before) I'd like to take a crack at this.

But where to start, is the question? I;m thinking at the very start of Dragonball, and going from there. but it doesn't have to be a chronological thing.

So... any scenes you guys want to see recreated in song? And if so, what songs would you suggest?

Well, I think Team Four Star showed us with their Make a Man Out of You video that training montages work real well musically, and I imaging certain fights would too. I can imagine a musical Goku vs Jackie Chun. A series of short Dragon Ball musical films showing the story would be amazing, and I'd be behind it all the way. The first could be the first arc of the manga, but that combined with the Red Ribbon arc like in Path to Power would also be good.

I can imagine a lovestruck Chichi singing about Goku all Disney style, or maybe Yamcha singing about his dream to get married after his first run-in with Bulma and Goku. I've longed to see the Ginyu Force ACTUALLY SING Sanjou! Ginyu Tokusentai! when making their first entrance. It seems really in character for them to have the instrumental part blasting out of the space pod speakers and actually sing and dance their introduction before Freeza.

The possibilities are endless, though, and I've thought for quite some time that Dragon Ball would really work in musical form, even (...or especially?) when it comes to the serious parts.

Seems like I've got stuff to chew on, then.

Only one thing comes to mind for me, and I was waiting to post it until I could find this picture that goes with it...but I can't seem to find it now, gah.

Anyway, I've long thought it'd be hilarious to see a cover of Michael Jackson's Thriller, done as...'Filler'. A song poking fun at all the insane filler. My idea was for it to cover anime in general, but I think it'd still work as a DB only one maybe, heh.

I'd like to see TFS do another musical episode. Their singing is always a treat.

The only thing with having the original voices singing is that Toei's purposely made Nozawa's Goku not very good at singing as evidenced by his two character songs (or I guess you could make that a plot-point of the musical; everyone but the main character can sing well.)
On hiatus.

I did make a topic on this if you want more ideas.

http://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtop ... =7&t=20506

I wonder why people honestly did not like this idea back then.
Anyway, off the top of my head, this would be awesome with a song about collecting the dragon balls at the beginning of the story. Also, Cell singing about his objective of absorbing 17 and 18.
Only way to have this work is to have a musical for each arc. Seriously this needs to be made...by tfs.

What sort of medium are you thinking about for this? It could be live action, animated from scratch, made from heavily edited existing DB footage, or even stop-motion animated. I think something live-action would probably have to be a parody, but I might be surprised.

Thanks for the suggestions.

And thanks for that thread.

As for right now, just looking to get scenarios and lyrics down. I'll post when I've got something semi-decent.

If there were a DB musical I would actually want it to be a series one not a parody.

So, guess we'll start at the beginning. Technically DBZ, but chronologically, this happened first.

Bardock's been given visions of a deadly future for the Saiyan Race. He attempts to convince others (and himself) that this can not come to pass.

(Original song - Heaven on their Minds, from Jesus Christ - Superstar.

Battles on their Minds

My mind is clearer now
At last, all too well
I can see where the Saiyan Race will be
If you strip away the cold truth, from the facade
You can see, where we all soon will be
FREEEEEEZAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
You’ve started to believe
The things they say of us
You finally believe
The Saiyans are dangerous
And all the work we’ve done
Will soon be done away
You’ve determined we’re at fault
And we have to pay

Listen Saiyans, I don’t like what I see
All I ask is that you listen to me
And remember, we’ve been with Freeza all along
He will set this world on fire
Our situation's really dire
And everything we’ve believed about Freeza is wrong

I wasn’t involved when this whole thing began
It didn’t matter; it was part of the plan
We didn’t care, as long we had our pride
But all the Kanassians we killed today
Have given me visions of a day
A day where we all died
Saiyans were better off without Freeza’s interference
But our blood called for battle, and it was good
Torn limbs, broken backs and exposed chests have suited us best
We live to cause others harm, and give others alarm

Listen Saiyans, don’t you care for our race
We can no longer stay in our place
Freeza’s coming, to remind us of how put down we are
He is frightened by our power
We grow stronger by the hour
And he’ll crush us since we’ve gone too far
Since we’ve gone too far…

Listen Saiyans to the warning I give
Just remember that I want us to live.
But it’s sad to see our chances weakening with every hour
All you idiots are blind!
Too many glorious battles on your mind.
It was fun, but now it’s sour.
Yes it’s all gone sour.

Listen, Saiyans, to the warning I give.
Just remember that I want us to live
So c’mon, c’mon
You idiots won’t listen to me
c’mon, c’mon
Damn it, listen to me…

Bardock faces off against Freeza.

Taken from parts of The Last Supper, from Jesus Christ Superstar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... mw0FmNWX7s (Around 4:45)
Bardock
You sick, demented freak, see where you've brought us to?
The Saiyan race quits, and it's all because of you.
And now it'll be my pleasure to have to do you in
Like a paranoid freak
like the scum off my boot
Like a petty tyrant
Like a petty tyrant
Like a petty, petty, petty, petty, petty tyant!
Freeza
Everytime I look at you, I don't understand
why I Iet you monkeys get so out of hand
You'd have lived longer with your heads in the sand
Hahahahhahahahaha!

I've got a ton of songs lined up for Z-related situations...

But Pre-Z is giving me trouble.

I think you should try and combine AVPM and TFS' styles to make an original musical work. The laid back "loosely based" feel of AVPM combined with TFS jokes, but still telling the story (which TFS does) would make for a killer musical. But, you'll want to find out whether you want to do original songs or parodies to make it.

If you want, use Z as an experiment, since Dragonball probably will be harder.

Let me know if I can help in the project!

I still think a fairly serious musical would work better. The Bardock and Saiyan arcs (together) would probably be the easiest, so I'm probably in agreement that experimenting with Z first would be easier.

I'm not talented enough to do original songs. The best I can do is repurpose existing songs into something that I can use.

As for parody songs, I'll leave that to guys like TFS. They are far funnier than I will ever be. But in-universe, serious songs? I haven't seen too many of those floating around.

Though if the situation called for it, I'd have no problem doing a comedic one. I imagine when I get to the Buu saga , that will come up.

I was trying to do things chronologically, but I may have to jump ahead to Z.

I can imagine Yamcha choreographing "Let it Burn" by Usher.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.
