Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

As TvTropes would call it... "Ho-Yay".Gyt Kaliba wrote:I'm not 'defending' the Goku/Vegeta pairing per say (I do find it a silly pairing myself - I'm about to explain why a bit - but not because it's two guys), but it's not exactly 'exclusive' to Dragon Ball. Naruto/Sasuke in Naruto, Yusuke/Kuwabara in YYH, Kazuma/Ryuhou in s-CRY-ed - it seems a large sect of the yaoi fandom sees two male characters who hate and/or bicker with each other all the time, and assume that's 'sexual tension' that clearly needs relieved...or...something. For a western example, Harry and Draco in Harry Potter.
That said though, Vegeta does fit a few of the tsundere traits towards Goku...just saying.

Exactly. It's a thing, and it happens a lot in pretty much every fandom that has ever existed. I bet anything you could find it in Shakespeare.Sinestro wrote:As TvTropes would call it... "Ho-Yay".

Has "Toriyama can't draw pretty girls/women" been said yet? Because I've only heard it twice but I never, EVER, want to hear that again.

Ho Yay and Foe Yay fits for Goku and Vegeta at different periods in their lives.AgitoZ wrote:I think the proper term is "Foe Yay".Sinestro wrote:As TvTropes would call it... "Ho-Yay".
But yeah, it was mostly Foe Yay.

"wah wah wah IT'S NOT DRAGON BALL Z IT'S ALL DRAGON BALL"
If people want to call it respectively, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, let them. Considering that's how most westerners know the series format, and the Z is something of at least Japanese origin and also the huge tonal shift between the two parts, you'd think people would stop being such wingy otakus about it.

I only call it DBZ if I'm talking about the anime. I call the rest of the manga as the Z era.

If people are allowed to call it whatever they want shouldn't the opposite be allowed too? Also, the mockery and name calling is a bit childish.

People can call it whatever they like as long as they don't act like a snob and bully other people because they don't bow to their odd little obsession with the western world's interactions with a Japanese comic.
(which is incredibly rampant in this subsection of the anime/manga society)

I insist on not using Z because I don't want anyone to think that the Saiyan arc is the start of the story, when it isn't, and starting from the Saiyan arc means you get things out of context and appreciate them much less. I only dislike the Z because the Z hinders peoples' enjoyment of the story by creating confusion, and I want people to have the best DB experience possible. It has nothing to do with "which naming system came first", at least for me.

Re: Dragon Ball things you never want to hear again
I tend to use the DB/Z/GT separation if I'm talking about a specific show or a specific section of the story, but less specific than individual story arcs - but if I'm talking about the franchise as a whole, I tend to just say 'DB' or 'Dragon Ball'. Sometimes I slip up and use DBZ as the whole shebang's moniker though, it's a tendency from the old days.

Re: Dragon Ball things you never want to hear again
This is true. I started watching DB with my niece for the same reason. I wanted her to enjoy the original series and know about all their adventures before Z. I just heard she might start watching Kai on TV, so I might have to skip most of the Filler training arcs to try to catch up.Fizzer wrote:I insist on not using Z because I don't want anyone to think that the Saiyan arc is the start of the story, when it isn't, and starting from the Saiyan arc means you get things out of context and appreciate them much less. Check out Journey's End, a short story of Goku and Vegeta's final days. "Time is running out for the last two Saiyans"

- The Old FUNi English Dub
- People talking about the character based on the old FUNi dub (got a little annoyed with someone when they went on about how Vegeta was enslaved...
)
- Some of the more intense GT bashing
- Kuririn bashing (mainly the English community)
- Fanon crap that some people think is canon (Dragonball was supposed to finish during Freeza, Toriyama received death threats if Goku wasn't made the here of the Boo arc, blah blah)
-Power levels post Freeza arc
- VS topics such as Goku vs Luffy etc. I don't understand why people get so into this...
- People who get annoyed when there is comedy in Dragonball...and haven't read the first half of the series/anime
- I want to watch the show not read it...
- Placing the movies into the main timeline...
- Canon debates
- Some Kai hate.
- AF/Hoshi crap.
I could probably go on and on...

It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.
Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

It's pretty cool around my area. No one seems to mention the Z at all lol. Except for the kids. They add a Kai, haha...Fizzer wrote:I insist on not using Z because I don't want anyone to think that the Saiyan arc is the start of the story, when it isn't, and starting from the Saiyan arc means you get things out of context and appreciate them much less. I agree with some of the stuff already listed. One thing I haven't seen mentioned though:
Hearing "I know what I'm talking about, I've been a fan FOREVER!" used in a discussion when that person wasn't even alive when I started watching the show. Even if you have been a fan since the original manga chapter was released in Japan, that doesn't automatically make you right.
Also, any discussion of "cannon". This isn't Sherlock Holmes, there is no canon.

Re: Dragon Ball things you never want to hear again
But not everything in DB can be canon. A lot of franchises don't have a official canon, but they have movies and other media that make it clear that the movie or comic is not canon. For example, Kamen Rider has no official canon but movies like Let's Go Kamen Rider can't be canon to any show at all because it can't fit and the movie is full of bad plot holes.bjh13 wrote:This isn't Sherlock Holmes, there is no canon.

No, what you're thinking of is "continuity". In DB's case the comic's continuity. For example, "The first DBZ movie cannot fit into continuity." Or, "The thirteenth DBZ movie fits perfectly into continuity."Hellspawn28 wrote:But not everything in DB can be canon. The canon to something would be like the Shakespeare canon, which are all the works accepted as being written by him. Or as someone mentioned, Sherlock Holmes canon, meaning all the stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
