it almost made me cry… Actually, I really did cry. It was deeply moving. I was raised with Dragon Ball. Goku and Vegeta really are Goku and Vegeta!

Bring it, BOG. *Hopes for a scene that's, if not Movie 12 level, at least end-of-Buu-arc's "Goku can't bear to throw the genki-dama with Vegeta trapped down there even though he has to if he wants to destroy Buu." level.*
It was one of those scenes that while in the manga was relatively short, in the anime it really notched up the tension like crazy for me at the time as it took nearly a whole episode with Goku all "I can't!" and Vegeta being all "You must!".

I know, I was going all crazy too. Added a lot to their characters.

I for one kinda hope Bils remains on top even at the end of the movie. If Goku beats him like he does any other villain then that would give the impression that being a " God" in Dragon Ball doesn't really mean shit, even though some could argue that we already got that impression do to Supreme Kai's uselessness in the Boo arc.

Why should they even do that?

Maybe people can import their stuff and watch them. Most shows from Japan never get released here.

I know some Japanese releases do get English subs, there should be more of them. If there was, I wouldn't have to wait on third-party distributions, even though I thought the DragonBall Z Levels were the clearly compelling superior version of the series.

With Fox on the ball, there's hope.

It's possible Goku won't beat him, after all, <OPZ plot spoiler>Luffy technically doesn't defeat Z at the end of OPZ.</OPZ plot spoiler> so for Toei, there's precedent for it.

Most of the Korean dramas was released with English sub on DVDs. There's no reason Toei couldn't release it with English sub. But I think we will get it eventually when Funimation licenses it.

Based on the wording, I think Watanabe cried simply due to seeing the (nearly) completed movie; ie it was a response to seeing the movie he worked on completed, rather than as a response to any particularly emotional scene.

You would think someone like Toei would get more money if they put English subs on their DVD's. Most of their shows from the Kamen Rider and Mazinger series never get release here and it seems like people in the US don't bother trying to release them.

But I think we will get it eventually when Funimation licenses it.

If they licenses it. We don't know yet since nothing about it has been said and they lose the rights to the franchise next year. Someone like Media Blasters or Viz could end up picking the franchise rights by 2014.

Kageyama has always had glorious Engrish singing, I can't help but love it. Amusingly enough, I think he's gotten worse at singing Engrish. Here's some 80s English (no one in the show can even pronounce Athena right, but he did in the song, lol):

It wouldn't be worth it, Japan rarely puts out good English subs when they do, unless they come from an already done subbed release in the US. I've heard some bad things about the JJBA subbed Blu Ray that just came out...

I'm wondering if, with Funi's tendencies to dub themes...if we'll finally get a dubbed version of CHA-LA-HEAD-CHA-LA. And if so, who would dub it?

And while I'm on the subject of dubs...who would you want to voice the new villains and celebrity guest characters?

I honestly doubt Funi will drop the license. They make far too much money from Dragon Ball at all times to drop it, especially now with a brand new movie coming out and the Buu Saga of Kai. They kept the series going in times less filled with releases than now. Besides, it's their best seller, why would they drop what's kept them from ending up like so many other anime companies in the past?

On the subject of subtitles on Japanese home videos: niche, Otaku-centric titles do get English subtitles on their Japanese releases. Since Toei Animation doesn't really participate in those titles (their stuff is mostly childrens and family fair) I doubt they'd go through the trouble of highering a translator and subtitlist for their domestic release. The movie is pretty much guanranteed an international release, so they don't have to worry too much. Aniplex and Bandai, in contrast, who dabble their feet in the North American market do put English subtitles on their domestic releases so as to attract any foreign fans willing to import.

He wasn't that bad in the 80s, like I said (especially for his English version of Soldier Dream), but the man seems to have given up trying to pronounce English right.

I'm sure my occasional attempts to karaoke old Super Sentai themes are worse than some of those so-...okay, maybe not, some of those songs are really bad at English, lol. But still, there's always an occasional gem here and there.

I'm curious as to if this movie will become a big enough hit to make DBZ movies make a full come back. Hell, maybe it'll get popular enough to make a new sequel (Toei is trying to bring their biggest international hits back *Minus One Piece, since it will never die*).

Well, I can agree with you on the latter. English-speakers mispronouncing Japanese bugs me enough as it is, I don't need the native speakers doing it now, too!
