Is DBZ the best Manga/Anime In your opinion?
If so why?

Ummm...no.
It has plenty of wasted characters (notably Yamcha), Toriyama-sensei often makes shit up as he goes along, and it jumps the shark after the Freeza arc (which becomes blatantly obvious by the Majin Boo arc). It's just simply not the sophisticated story ever. I like it for the character dynamics and fight scenes.

Is Dragon Ball the best manga/anime? Absolutely fucking not. Is it my favourite? Yes, definitely.
I love Dragon Ball, but it is very flawed. The pacing is often weird, stuff is made up as it goes along, plenty of stuff gets retroactively altered, there is no "definitive" version which is better than the others in every way for me, the anime suffers from a lot of padding, character/emotional/girly stuff tends to get skipped over leaving just action plus a handful of moving scenes and so on. I'm not bashing DB, I love it, it's probably my favourite franchise of any kind, but it certainly isn't the highest quality, most well-made or best thought-out manga or anime out there, it doesn't have the most intricate story or the most moving scenes.

Re: Is DBZ the best Manga/Anime In your opinion?
The best? No. My experience with manga is far too limited for me to make that distinction. And while I've seen several anime shows, it is a bit too inconsistent to be "the best"
But is it my favorite anime and manga? Yes, it is.

Favourite Yes. Best, hell no. There are tons that probably do the job better. The posters above give good reasons.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Re: Is DBZ the best Manga/Anime In your opinion?
I'm kinda happy to see that I'm not the only one to feel this way. For the longest time when I was young, I did regard Dragon Ball as the best title I'd seen, but after seeing a lot more titles, I just found myself less and less 'impressed' per say by what's in Dragon Ball. The biggest moment was after I finished the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime, and I found myself really enamored by what I saw there. So I put that as the 'best' show I'd ever seen.
Time passed again though, and despite still feeling that to be the 'best' anime I'd seen, I still found myself talking about Dragon Ball more and even still enjoying it more. So I realized that I actually had two lists of stuff in my head - there's the stuff that is the best I've seen, and then there's my favorites. The two cross over a lot, but they don't match up on every account at all.
So yeah, Dragon Ball is probably my favorite even still now, but 'best'? Not by any means.

Best, maybe out all of the shonen anime I've seen (although I'm starting to enjoy One Piece somewhat) and certainly most influential. Not sure about manga, I've only read Azumaga Daioh apart from Dragonball... I love seeing Toriyama's artwork grow and the story telling up until Freeza.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.
Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

I suppose I should rephrase then. Is this your favorite Anime/Manga? If so, why?

It's probably mostly nostalgia goggles. The characters make me happy, the music makes me happy. I like the gradual progression of the story of the characters lives, and it's just always fun.

A part of it may be nostalgia on my part as well, yeah, but...I really can't put it into words. There's just something about Dragon Ball that always drags me back to it. I just like it. That's it I guess, I like it and I like it quite a bit.

Re: Is DBZ the best Manga/Anime In your opinion?
I do consider Dragon Ball Z to be the best manga because, I enjoy the fighting action to see two characters kicking each others backsides to see who comes on top. I'm into strategy-based anime like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon, do I consider them to be best anime/manga besides DBZ? Sometimes I do when it comes to well written stories between protagonist and antagonist battling each other out..
Re: Is DBZ the best Manga/Anime In your opinion?
I'll echo the sentiment of "Not best, but favorite". Dragon Ball fails to consistently use its characters well, and the plot became more and more repetitive as time went on.
I can name a few shonen manga/anime off the top of my head that I feel are superior (One Piece and Full-Metal Alchemist), though I still like Dragon Ball the most.

I'm actually kind of split on One Piece, as far as a 'best' status goes. It's certainly a lot more deeply plotted than Dragon Ball, even if I were to compare DB at it's best versus OP at it's worst, but sometimes...it's almost mind-numbingly so. Stuff that showed up years ago can suddenly turn out to be plot important. There's so much plot going on in One Piece that he has to tell some of it in chapter covers for crying out loud.CaBrPi wrote:I can name a few shonen manga/anime off the top of my head that I feel are superior (One Piece and Full-Metal Alchemist), though I still like Dragon Ball the most.
Mind you, I'm not complaining at all, and I love the hell out of One Piece. I'm just not sure if I'd put it on my own 'best' status since sometimes, no matter how much I love it, I'm lost as can be.

Ahahahaha. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA. Hahahahaha. No. *wipes tears from eyes* Oh god, no.
I wouldn't even put it in my top 10. Hell, I probably wouldn't put it in my top 20.
It is an incredibly fun show, and even has some pretty good storylines and some exciting combat, though. It has various colorful characters, as well. I probably like every character, short of some of the filler and movie characters. I can't even say that of some of my favorite shows. I like all of them: Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, Nappa, Mr. Satan, Karin, Kiwi, Dabura, Bulma's Mom, Obnoxious Fat Lady With Obnoxious Kids at Tenkaichi Budoukai, Uub, you name 'em.

Oh, I wasn't even saying "best". Just, I find One Piece to be generally a superior piece of work than Dragon Ball.Gyt Kaliba wrote:I'm actually kind of split on One Piece, as far as a 'best' status goes. I'm not even sure how you can distinguish from "best" and "favourite". It's not like there is any objective way to measure quality.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!
