How was Kai damaging the franchise?JulieYBM wrote:This "hate Toriko because it replaced Dragon Ball Kai" thing has never made any sense. Dragon Ball Kai was terrible and damaging the franchise. Dragon Ball Kai can't exactly say the same.

Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

I've never seen any One Piece, so this news doesn't excite me as much as you guys. Still, this is cool news.
I take it I should watch a bit of OP just so I know what the heck the craze is all about?

Couldn't hurt. Or you could check out some of the manga, since it would be quicker that way. If you watch/read at least up to the end of the Arlong arc, you'll know for sure if you like it or not.Sinestro wrote:I've never seen any One Piece, so this news doesn't excite me as much as you guys. Gotta love all the irrational Toriko hate.
The crossover is good for just about everyone involved. I doubt the writers will come up with anything special but I'll still watch this novel event. Seeing all the characters together should be enough to please me.

Are you kidding me? Dragon Ball Kai didn't damage the franchise. The TV ratings in Japan for Kai had been constantly in top 5, so it was quite popular, just not as popular as it was back then when DBZ was originally broadcasted. Also not to mention merchadises have been selling well ever since Kai first debuted. So how exactly did Toriko save the Dragon Ball franchise from an embarassment, aside from the Yamamoto scandal?JulieYBM wrote:This "hate Toriko because it replaced Dragon Ball Kai" thing has never made any sense. Dragon Ball is being included in this special to promote the new movie. Toriko is once again saving Son Gokuu and friends' bacon from getting burned. I think we ought to be thankful for that much.

I was under the impression that the lack of merchandise sales is what killed Kai in Japan. No matter how good they are, ratings don't pay the bills. DVD sales were awful from what I've heard.DragonBalllKaiHD wrote:Are you kidding me? Dragon Ball Kai didn't damage the franchise. Have a listen to the "What the hell happened to Dragon Ball Kai" episode. It might be somewhat irrelevant at this point, but it's still a fascinating ride.

And it's working. I just checked out this Toriko show on youtube to see what it's all about.Super Saiyan Prime wrote:Toriko's pulling in rather poor numbers all around. The ratings are way down from Kai, and are currently closer to the One Piece reruns than the premieres in viewership. The manga isn't selling like a top JUMP property either. They'll probably hope this gets Dragon Ball fans, and One Piece fans watching Toriko as well as alerting everyone to Battle of Gods.
It looks.. okay I suppose. Doesn't seem like its better than Dragonball though.

Yeah, it did. Dragon Ball Kai (and the cross medium marketing) tossed twelve years of build up out the window. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is a Hail Mary if I've ever seen one; a desperate attempt to show audiences "Okay, yeah, sorry, we screwed up" without actually exhausting their already stretched resources.DragonBalllKaiHD wrote:Are you kidding me? And I accept BOG for being that Hail Mary Pass, because almost-everything that I've seen so far involving the movie itself has been to my liking; what brought it into being doesn't really matter much to me, I'm just happy it's here.

So looking at it that way, Battle of Gods is kind of what the Dragon Boxes were for FUNi, something better than their previous product that they didn't have to do by any means, and is largely an apology to the fans?JulieYBM wrote:Yeah, it did. The ANN write up has a few details on the special. It looks like they're going to cram a lot into the special (or 'might', at least). Come on, Tate Naoki, Shida Naotoshi, and Oonishi Ryou for key animation!
For the most part, I'd say so. Toei tried to cheapskate with their biggest property and wound up falling on their asses. I'm honestly surprised we're getting a new movie before the next anniversary (2014 for Dragon Ball Z and the comic and 2016 for the first TV series, for example).Gyt Kaliba wrote:So looking at it that way, Battle of Gods is kind of what the Dragon Boxes were for FUNi, something better than their previous product that they didn't have to do by any means, and is largely an apology to the fans?JulieYBM wrote:Yeah, it did. Yeah, ever since I heard that 2014 was another big anniversary of the manga, I've been kind of shocked that all of the new material is happening now - first the new movie and this, then the colored manga. Not that I mind them jumping the gun at all though.

I'm surprised at how little Americans don't know of Toriko. It's a great anime and show. Funny and action packed.

Not everyone who posts here is a fan of Japanese comics and cartoons in general, so it's not too surprising.hulkty wrote:I'm surprised at how little Americans don't know of Toriko. It's a great anime and show. Funny and action packed.

Why do you guys hate Toriko so much? I don't read it, but some friends of mine do and they love it.
You know, it's just a cool adventure battle shonen manga. Just like One Piece and Dragon Ball.
You guys should read more manga.

I don't hate it, I just don't like the art style. It's like...a pseudo-80's art-style, but not in a pleasant way imo.
