Doraemon is not magical, he's scientifical. Kinda.

Hm. I'd figure he'd get it from Bruce Lee's The Game of Death, the famous movie that started the whole "race to the top of a tower while fighting opponents on each floor" theme that you see in so many anime and video games today.

The game itself takes elements from Game of Death, so in a way Toriyama WAS influenced by the movie...

This is by far my favorite reference in Dragon Ball it always reminds me that Toriyama is a big Jackie Chan fan ( I tend forget sometimes even with the obvious "Jackie Chun") and so am I and it makes DB that much more awesome!
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

The Great Saiyaman is referencing the Super Sentai genre/series in Japan. This is a cool thread, didn't know about the Golden Harvest presentations thing.

The Ginyu Force also are a reference to the Super Sentai genre/series.

I'm working on a pretty huge list of things right now, but I can't really post it yet because of, erm... stuff.

But I promise I'll show off the fruits of my labor, eventually.

Posted this in the video game forum before realizing it would be appropriate here, but kid Chi Chi's helmet blade attack is a reference to Ultra Seven's famous Eye Slugger attack. The game Super DBZ calls this attack of hers "Power Slugger", probably as a nod to its origin. Her beam attack is likewise based off Ultra Man's signature Ultra Beam attack. The Adventure Special rather flippantly confirms these references by flat-out describing Chi Chi's attacks as the Eye Slugger and Ultra Beam.

Not so much a franchise reference but I have a feeling Trunks' long hair was probably based off of Kurt Cobain's. I mean he was popular around the time (1991-1993 was the Cell arc stuff) and they do look similar with the hair line being split and all.

#16's Rocket Punch is an homage to the signature Rocket Punch attack of Mazinger Z.
