DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
So far, I love those color editions available physically and digitally, it's nothing short of extraordinary!
The colors emphasize the overall vibe of all the places, you really feel a strong atmospheric difference between the wooden buildings of the Tenkaichi Budokai, the cold white landscape of the Muscle Tower, the dry rocky areas and so on...
It makes you feel more the different ambiance of the various places in Toriyama's story, and makes it feel all the more like an extraordinary journey around the world in all its variety.
I also love the fact that the coloring is extremely detailled, going as far as adding extra shading/shadows on the characters' faces and bodies, so that the coloring feels natural and not too simplistic like fan coloring would be.
The artistic choices bring a strong sense of novelty, having the sky being much more what it should naturally be during the Saiyan invasion brings a whole new feel to the situation, and scenes like the golden Kame Hame Ha VS golden Garlic Cannon are probably the most beautiful version of any sort of media so far.
Good artistic choices plus extra details that makes you feel like you know what it would feel like to be there... The only thing I would complain about for the physical format would be the reduced size compared to the Kanzenban: how can they possibly promote it as a better choice "so that it fits in your personnal library with other books"? The Kanzenban are the perfect size, their bigger size do increase dynamism and they're not too big to fit on a shelve either!
I think it's the only mistake they've made, the detailled coloring would be all the more impressive with a Kanzenban size precisely showing all the details!

Shenlong and the Great Apes are blue?? I KNOW Shenlong is green in the Kanzenban...Fox666 wrote:I really like Commander Red color scheme from the manga. Too bad for other things they go with the anime.
Not sure if I like the yellow blasts, aren't them blue most of the time in the manga? I had like to see Karin, Shenlong and the Oozaru which are all originally blue. Do they have something against the blue color?

I like them but I preffer Kanzenban edition. Colouring is OK but is simple, no much play of light and shadow and no variety of background colors.
Here some pictures.
Nice to see you here, Redon

Shenron had many colors through artworks, but he doesn't appear in full color pages as far as I remember.linkdude20002001 wrote:Shenlong and the Great Apes are blue?? Most artworks depict him as green or blue, the only "serious" depictions of him I remember - meaning with normal eyes and not looking unusually friendly - are on tiny Daizenshuu 1 artworks (pictures 78 and 83), where he is depicted as being blue with yellow eyes and being green with red eyes (similarly to the anime).
I've never seen a fully colored version of the Giant Ape by Toriyama as far as I remember, so it would help if we could have some reference to it (if its origin is legitimate, it could be a worthy addition to the "official colors" thread).
It seems unlikely to me that the Giant Ape would have a different color than the brown tail depicted on many Toriyama artworks with young Goku, since it's essentially a part of the Ape staying out. If the color was altered specifically for the human form, then the tail would likely have its owner's hair color (black)... Since it's not the case, it means it likely keeps the Oozaru form's color, which makes sense if you consider it as an unrepressed part of the Giant Ape.
Where is that picture from? (it's not included on the original manga pages nor in the Daizenshuu 1).
Karin indeed appeared as blue once in full color pages. It is hard to find two artworks depicting him the same way though (orange, brown, light blue with white around the mouth, completely dark blue...) which may have pushed the color staff to consider him as an "inconsistant" character - therefore picking the "stable" anime version.
And blasts, like all forms of energy in the manga except the Kaioken, are almost always pure white if I'm not mistaken. However, on the Kanzenban covers, Toriyama switched to making auras blue (even for Super Saiyans).
There are also exceptions to it, like during Dodoria chasing Krilin and Gohan, Dodoria's aura appear to have a yellow surrounding on the contrary of other characters.

Toriyama's GIANT PENCIL is hilarious. X3
I like how he's got it slung over his back like Goku would with nyoi-bo.
Also, elderly Goku with that big 'ol mustache is still funny to me. XD
Actually, elderly-Goku looks kinda Einstein-esque now that I think about it, what with the missing fringe and all.

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
Thanks, it's pretty obvious that it's by Toriyama alright!
This will be a nice addition to the "official colors" thread in the future!
I'm pretty sure the staff was either unaware of it (they likely checked the color pages and the Daizenshuu 1 which are supposed to collect all of its artworks except his recent ones) or they found it to be too unusual to be used - or considered it an isolated "crazy" one-time color scheme.
And it seems we have a second occurence of green-outfit Gohan again, even though Toriyama originally went back to make him purple-suited as soon as the trip to Namek started!

Well, that one is from Piccolo, right? And the blue one Gohan made? It makes sense that they could be different colors that way. Gohan wanted one like Piccolo's.

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
Overall a high quality release but as I've been reading mine and had some questions, about the physical version.
Anyone have a hard time reading these with the dust jacket on? They keep sliding around and I keep on talking them off to read.
Also, sometime the panels seem a bit too close the binding and I really gotta open the book up wide to read. Other than that I'm really pleased with these, I like the paper they used.

I usually take the dust jacket off to read most manga, or most books with a dust jacket for that matter. I just set them off to the side and enjoy the insides of the bookeledoremassis02 wrote:

EDIT: What do the covers look like without the dust jacket by the way? Always something I'm curious about...

That looks pretty good. I like it when they do something a little different than just reprinting the same cover in monotone. These are pretty similar, but a little redesigned which shows a little extra work went in to it!
And, haha, the flash makes it look like the Dragon Ball in the middle is glowing orange. Nice

Seeing these images make me very sad inside. The fact that Sal shipping from Japan takes forever, is really breath taking.

Yeah, I always do the same as well. I don't want to ruin the dust cover, and it just makes the book easier to hold.medama_oyaji wrote:I usually take the dust jacket off to read most manga, or most books with a dust jacket for that matter.
