Hi, Kamil. Your English is pretty good :D

1. The price is high because there's a lot in the box (dozens of discs, hundreds of episodes)

2. Nope, that's the worst part. They're only in Japanese. They're also region 2 , meaning they won't play on DVD players that aren't region 2. So make sure you have an R2 DVD player (if you bought it in Europe, you should be fine).

3. The DragonBox DVDs are the best quality DBZ you'll ever see, bar none. You can get more information about it here.

It's also due to the fact that Japanese society, atleast the "Otaku" market have a higher ammount of disposable income (cheap trains, etc) and as such they charge highers for these kinds of ammounts because the standards of what is "reasonable" there is higher than it is over here.

Subsequently, you can buy multi-region players, or modify your player to play NTSC and PAL, with all regions.

86 discs for DragonBall Z @ $24.95 (original MSRP) is $2145.70 before taxes.

The two Dragon Box releases for Z were 100,000 yen a piece, so that's $1696.21.

Winner: Dragon Box

The other two series I didn't buy at all domestically, but FUNi probably managed to do better with the prices...I hope. In the end, I'm guessing the two came out roughly tied in terms of pricing if you bought everything DragonBall.

As a sidenote, I thought it been had established that the Dragon Box Movie set was going to be cropped while the Funimation releases were not (has this changed?). So while you will get better video quality/audio you will lose some of the picture (a sacrifice some would not be willing to accept).

Any word if this is still the case or is that the reason for the recent delay?

86 discs for DragonBall Z @ $24.95 (original MSRP) is $2145.70 before taxes.
Only if you're buying them at Suncoast(does anyone actually still do this?). They're all $16-$17 at Best Buy(some are $13 at Amazon, and anywhere from $9 to $16 at deepdiscountdvd.) So $17 times 86 discs is $1,462. Or to use $12 as an average from deepdiscountdvd... $1,032.

Granted, it's still pretty darn expensive no matter what, but not quite as much as you're implying.

I have just about every Dragon Ball related Funimation DVD available and I shutter to think how much it has cost me, but those figures of around $1000 sound about right. The trick is to be thrifty. Most of my DVDs are from Overstock.com. The rest are mostly from Ebay that I got used. Very rarely to I walk into a store and buy one (except on Tuesday when I walked in Wal-Mart and saw Movie 12). :)

...this makes my head hurt. Let me break it down:

MSRP = Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. It is, as the name implies, the price the manufacturer suggests the retailer sell it for. FUNimation always marketed the DragonBall Z releases for $24.95 when they were first released. Yes, some retailers sell it for less. Point being, the standard price is $24.95 a volume.

Now, same goes for the Dragon Box releases. 100,000 yen a piece or $850 MSRP, but typically they could be had for $700. So, while I spent about $1400 on the Dragon Boxes for Z, you'd spend $1320 (adding two volumes for Bardock and Trunks, and using an average of $15 per new volume, since that's what DeepDiscountDVD has the latest volume listed for).

So, basically, I paid $80 more than you for a new crisp transfer, actual extras, and all the episodes at once. As opposed to 7 years of dicking around and *still* not having all the episodes out. That, I'd say, isn't a bad deal at all ;p

-Corey

P.S. - I'm not saying which is better, I'm simply clarifying the price point. I'm happy with my purchase, and hopefully you're happy with yours.

Now I'm not sure what the arguement is. In your first post, you appeared to be saying that the Dragonboxes are cheaper than the Funimation DVDs(at MSRP, granted, but it was the only price point mentioned). Now you're saying both versions can be had for less than the MSRP(which is certainly true). So, er... I'm not sure why the "suggested retail price" had to be brought up in the first place, since neither of us is paying that much for the series.

...I give up. Anyone else care to explain?

Domon, he was giving price-point examples. And when you give examples, you don't ignore the MSRP, because not everyone can get things cheaper online; so we make examples out of both price points to be consistent.

But as said, the DVDs can be brought in store for far cheaper than MSRP, and since all of us here are online, chances are we all (or most of us) can buy the various discs for cheap. So again, I don't see what the need is to bring up the highest possible prices for these things, since it doesn't appear to be a real concern for anyone.

Now don't get me wrong, I understand the need for references points and all that, but it seems irrelevant in this case.

Very well, in that case *ahem*

A Japanese crackhead sold me all the DragonBoxes, his house, his wife and a mint Nissan Skyline GT-R for $200. So they're cheaper *and* better.
