I know that there are some annoying Japanese DBZ fans, but I never seen any Japanese fans on the web are on the same level of most US DBZ fans. I think US fans that only use the FUNimation dub (Pre-Kai) as their soruce of info can get on my nerves sometimes. It annoys me when most of them will say "Well that's the dub that most people watch. No one cares what the weeaboo dub has to say"
. Fans don't have respect for the source material.

I would really enjoy it if the Kai dub was used with Bruce Faulconer soundtrack. Lines are more accurate, and some of the enemies don't sound as dumb when they talk. Although I disliked their choice for Gohan's voice in the Android/Cell saga. Same for Frieza, but everybody else sounds good.Hellspawn28 wrote:I know that there are some annoying Japanese DBZ fans, but I never seen any Japanese fans on the web are on the same level of most US DBZ fans. If Kai really is going to continue a Buu Saga, this could be my favorite version of DBZ. Since its based mainly on the Manga, and all the filler is cut out.

But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I think every franchise has its annoying fans.
In terms of Dragon Ball, I don't think it's limited to people in America; there are annoying fans all over the world. (Hell, there's even members on this website that I find annoying, obviously not gonna say who, but y'know).
But I think with America, it's because the show became so popular with a version that deviates significantly from the original show. I think "ignorant" or "mis-informed" are words that perfectly describe a good number of fans.
And then there are the ones that steal from Kanzenshuu and its members (you know who you are.

Uncalled for to say the least. Kikuchi fits sure, but that doesn't mean he generally sounds better. It all depends on your tastes in music. I like Rock, Metal, and Retro Video Game music so naturally I tend to gravitate towards Faulconer's sound.penguintruth wrote:Not everybody has to prefer the Kikuchi score.

It fits in a lot of cases, though I wouldn't say most that doesn't make Faulconer bad for the series. You know Faulconer probably would have done a pretty good job composing for the American releases of the video games.ABED wrote:And I love Metallica, doesn't mean it goes with Dragon Ball as a score.TheMightyOzaru wrote:Uncalled for to say the least. The video games are different, and in many cases Faulconer was WAY off, such as during the Super Saiyan transformation, and Bulma's theme. Individual tracks might be good, but it doesn't fit the overall tone of the show.

Re: The general American fanbase really annoys me.
For all the talk about the "divide in fandom," I'd have to imagine that there was going to be a divide no matter what. I'd have to imagine that, even if "Dragon Ball," "Dragon Ball Z," and "Dragon Ball GT" were all dubbed as effectively as the first three uncut Pioneer/Ocean-dubbed DBZ movies, the "divide" would still exist. There would still be people who said that the dub failed to capture the original spirit of the Japanese version. That just seems to be a constant in anime. There's no such thing as a universally-loved dub. No matter how well-written or how well-acted, there will always be people who prefer the original Japanese audio purely by virtue of the fact that is the original audio, that the original creators had the biggest and most direct influence on. I've heard plenty of people say that, even if a dub is better, they don't want to watch something in anything other than its native language.
Of course, to be fair, even though this divide would still probably exist, I'm sure the divide would nevertheless be significantly smaller. Purely by virtue of the fact that the debate would be a true "dub vs sub" debate rather than a "FUNimation reversion" vs "original Japanese version" debate...we'd be talking about the same show.
Secondly, let's step back for a second...is it truly annoying that people enjoy something? I personally don't enjoy Faulconer's music, but I have no quarrels with the fact that others do. I personally prefer Sean Schemmel as Goku, but I have no quarrels with people who prefer Masako Nozawa. I personally prefer Kenji Yamamot's plagiarized score for Kai, but have no quarrels with the people who prefer the new Kikuchi mix. What's the problem, really?
I'm not saying every "subbie" is like this, many of them aren't...but I've noticed that some subbies seem to be bothered when people enjoy a heavily-altered show. Like it's wrong that people are actually having fun and being happy watching a show that bears little resemblance to the original. I find that incredibly annoying. Even dubbies have this problem to a degree, with frequent accusations that the original version sounds "gay." I find that incredibly annoying as well.
My thought is...it's a TV show. In this day and age, both versions are readily (and legally) available. We can each watch what we like. No need to bother one another. Can't we all just get along? Even if getting along means going our separate ways?
The only thing I find "annoying" is when a particular fanbase is bothered by the fact that fans are getting enjoyment out of a different version of something that they get enjoyment out of. An annoyance that, as far as I can tell, is certainly not limited to Americans.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Not true, I find dub of Dissidia Final Fantasy on par with the Japanese version. Except for Kefka, who is simply superior, dubbed by Pilaf's actor.TheBlackPaladin wrote:Long text

But Funimation dub reminds me of the dub of Samurai Warriors. I even don't like their accent. There is room for them to be damn better, with both acting and the script.

One could argue that because FUNi was trying to appeal to the people who it ended up appealing to that we got such an attrocious dub.

Re: The general American fanbase really annoys me.
There's a reason for that, though: say what you will about the Americanized DBZ being so far removed from the spirit of the Japanese original, at bottom, it's not that different. It's just that the emphasis is on different elements. Even the original dubbed Japanese version of DBZ involves a lot of what can be termed superheroics. No, Goku isn't Superman in an orange gi in that one, but he is heroic. No, Piccolo isn't as Stoically Badass in that one, but he is still a stoic badass.
Those elements all existed in the original. All FUNImation did was exaggerate them for an American audience.

Most of the Japanese industru guests I've spoken to don't understand the purist phenomenon. The directors I know say that anime is meant to be enjoyed in the viewer's native language, because while a person is trying to read the subtitles, they're ignoring the art and subtleties of the show! Additionally, unless you actually KNOW Japanese, how do you know the acting's better? Do you just like the sounds? That always confused me.
I think a person who is an annoying DBZ fan would be an annoying Nascar fan, or an annoying football fan. Annoying people exist, and they will enter fandoms, but always remember that there are enough awesome people to negate that. By fans pointing fingers at fans, we're just creating a schism in an already niche enough hobby.

Re: The general American fanbase really annoys me.
The issue with the older dubs was that they added such cheesy lines and stupid jokes. I really hate it when people try to dub shows and try to make them appeal to for an American audience. Other anime dubs will try to stay close to the Japanese scripts and don't treat the viewers stupid.
