Generations Who Started With Kai
Generations Who Started With Kai
So, Kai is on TV now, whereas DBZ is not. I realized that for the kids whose first experience with the franchise is with Kai, there are several differences that I'm not sure I would like had I started with it. If I were 6 now, and watching it for the first time today:
I would have thought Goku stayed dead.
I would have never had to figure out Frieza's gender.
I wouldn't have had to wait for weeks at a time for a fight to start
I wouldn't have liked Mr. Satan AT ALL
I wouldn't have been able to take advantage of the merchandise boom.
What do you think woud be different if you started with modern day kai? Any benefits? detriments?

Re: Generations Who Started With Kai
First and foremost, I would've had the positives of a good dub with excellent voices. We have the internet now, so kids can look up stuff on Dragon Ball. I'm sure I would have, though I'm not sure. We didn't have the internet when I was 6 (I was born in '85).Smochi wrote:So, Kai is on TV now, whereas DBZ is not. Now that I think about your question, what are we assuming? Are you asking if DBZ never existed and the only adaptation of Dragon Ball Z was Kai? Are we assuming we are as old as we were when DBZ aired?
- Did you like having to figure out Freeza's sex?
- Is Mr. Satan's name the issue? Is there something about how he's portrayed in Kai that's different than how he was portrayed in Z? Or is it just that you didn't warm to him until the Buu saga?
- If I was 6 when Kai aired, I doubt I would have the Dragon Boxes. My parents might not have bought them for me, especially not the first one.

I have no idea. I thought he was pretty so I was mad he wasn't girl like me. I liked "her" because she was the first girl fighter I saw. XD But, I enjoy so many of the jokes now! I'm sort of glad about the confusion.

Re: Generations Who Started With Kai
You pose interesting questions, but it's hard for me to answer. If I was born just a few years ago, I don't know if I would even have seen anything Dragon Ball related. My history with Dragon Ball started when I lived in Japan. I have a few memories of seeing glimpses of the show, but they were mainly hearing the names Dragon Ball Z, Goku and Gohan. It wasn't until my family moved back to the US that I saw it when the Ocean dub first aired, and the only reason I probably stopped to watch is because I heard the name "Goku". TV is so different now than it was then. There were less channels, and home video wasn't as prominent.
The reason I always knew Freeza was male was because I read Curtis Hoffmann's manga summaries.

I kind of feel bad for the kids/viewers who started watching Dragon Ball as in Dragon Ball Kai because it got its original score removed and Gohan's an annoying high pitched girl who's never happy.
By the way, please don't compare Colleen to Nozawa, that's insulting.

More than likely Nozawa because he just insulted Colleen's performance in his post.ABED wrote:Kai kept the JPN music, and who's the comparison insulting to? Why would you claim Colleen's Gohan sounds like he's never happy?

1. Gets kidnapped.
2. Watches father die.
3. Kidnapped again.
4. Left alone for 6 months.
5. Watch friends and father figure die
6. Witnesses a genocide
7. Uncle figure dies
8. Thinks father dies
9. Father actually just left him to train.
I always Nadolny's Goha, while great, sounded a little too comical/happy. Colleen really captured the angst that I think a kid would feel, and to me, sounded more believable as a young boy.

I don't think so but I do find Collen's Gohan is a bit too shilled. It's at least much better than Stephanie Nadoley's initial chain-smoker performance though.ABED wrote:Why would you claim Colleen's Gohan sounds like he's never happy?

I get why someone who went through that might have issues, but Gohan didn't, and I never got from Colleen's performance that Gohan sounded angsty. Is there a scene you could point to as showing that?Smochi wrote:1. Gets kidnapped.

Haha, I looked up shilled too. XD
He doesn't sound angsty, he just captured the feeling that I think a child would had they gone through what he has. When he was angry, or despairing, he sounded more raw and genuine, combining the sadness of events past and a general dread for what's to come, instead of "Now I'm happy! Now I'm sad. Now I'm MAD. Now I'm happy again!" I guess I just thought his emotional transitions were smoother.

Re: Generations Who Started With Kai
Gotcha. I like Colleen, but if there's one criticism I have of her Gohan voice is that it's often too feminine even for a little boy. However, she's super talented so I can deal with it. I'm not a fan of Nadolny's work as Gohan and even less fond of her work as Goku. Her voices have a quality that I find unpleasant. I have nothing against her personally, and her normal voice is fine, I'm just not a fan of her in those roles.
I love Nozawa, and maybe I'm so used to the way she sounded back in the 80s and 90s, but she's lost a step. She's still an excellent actress but I don't know how to explain it but her voice doesn't have as much of the youthful quality that Goku needs. That's to be expected though, since she's 30 years older.
Today's generation missed out on the big surge of popularity back in the late 90s, early 00s.

I think Colleen is pretty close, though. I mean, the average little boy won't sound exactly like that, but I've definitely heard young boys that do.

I'm glad the Bulma, Freeza and Gohan were recast, but it would've been interesting to hear what they could've done with good scripts.

The Krusty the Clown laugh she gave Goku makes me shudder. There are much better Kid Goku voices - Nozawa for one, Colleen's was pretty good so it's a shame that we never got to hear more of her in the role, and I also really love Saffron Henderson in the role, perhaps even moreso than as Gohan.
