How many English releases will you own before you stop?
Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
I would have stopped at the Dragon Boxes if they had just added the English and Japanese BGM without sacrificing quality. But that didn't happen so for Z I own the Blu-Ray levels, 2 orange bricks, all the dragon boxes, the ultimate uncuts, a few singles, the ocean sets, So yeah.... something along the lines of the Blu-Ray level sets needs to come back. Once I get those I'm finished.

Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
Well I intend to buy the Kai Buu Saga, but because I'm a completionist I'll want it to match. So if the release Part 9 and so on I'll be getting those. If they abandon the Parts altogether and go with Season 5, and possibly Season 6, then I'll re-buy the whole series in their Season sets, as silly as that sounds.
That may very well be it for me, aside from games of course.

For your information each episode on the DBZ Level sets weighs 5.17GB more or less, so that's 77.55GB and what's the limit of a Blu-ray Disc? 50GB. You'd still need more than one disc to hold 15 episodes without sacrificing (compressing) the quality.Scott wrote:It shouldn't be a problem keeping the quality though. The season box sets have 7-8 episodes per disc and they are on 8gb DVD's, with a Blu-ray disc a single layer can hold 25gb's worth and a dual layer can take 50gb. I am sure it would be very east to put 15 episodes on one disc without losing quality.
The PQ of Dragon Box Z looks superb to me and tweaking the HDTV settings a bit improves it even more to enjoy the experience.I would have stopped at the Dragon Boxes if they had just added the English and Japanese BGM without sacrificing quality. By the way, I hope Dragon Ball Kai Majin Buu arc looks great in HD because it's enough of crappy PQ and Kai has a lot of it already. This and the music, but since it's not recycled Kai-Kikuchi I suppose it will suit it.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
I'll keep going until I have a definitive, perfect release, or there's nothing that provides something that nothing I already own does. I really only want to own a single release.
I have:
Viz tankibons 1-42 (just to be able to read it)
Kanzenban 1-3
Full-colour edition Saiyan arc
FUNi Blue bricks 1-5
FUNi Dragon Box Z 1-7
FUNi GT complete series
FUNi Kai parts 1-4 (for Yamamoto)
FUNi Kai seasons 1-4 (for consistency and completion)
FUNi Z movie steelbooks 1-7
FUNi Dragon Ball movie four pack
Ocean dub Saiyan saga (it's sort of a piece of history)
I would have the orange bricks if I had the money to spend on the extra audio track.
If there's ever a completely uncensored, coloured, English-language, complete, "Z"-less manga release, I will only own the manga once. If true English kanzenbans or English full-colour editions (including the pre-Saiyan arcs) were released, I wouldn't have my tankibons or the Japanese versions anymore because they'd be useless to me. If Dragon Boxes of Dragon Ball, GT and the movies are ever released, I'll get rid of the DB, GT and movies I already have because they'll be useless to me. If a consistent full-Yamamoto version of Kai were available, I wouldn't have the Kai seasons because they'd be (almost) useless to me. If the Dragon Boxes Z had the Faulconer audio, I'd be completely satisfied with my Z collection.

Might get the orange brick version of Kai on blu-ray if it ever comes out. Other than that I'm pretty much done spending money on this franchise.

I assume he's talking about a standard definition release on a Blu-ray Disc.dbboxkaifan wrote:For your information each episode on the DBZ Level sets weighs 5.17GB more or less, so that's 77.55GB and what's the limit of a Blu-ray Disc? 50GB. Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
Standard definition on a Blu-ray is kind of a waste because BD's intended for high definition content only really.
Mixing SD and HD would be a mess for the market, better to keep as it is (DVD - SD / BD - HD).

If I can get it unedited and based on high quality masters, I'll buy it. That rules out most of Kai at this point, though.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Blu-rays being used to package a ton of SD content on them in the future, but I guess we aren't at that point yet.

Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
I bought Funi's Z Dragon Boxes, and other than any new material that may get released on an actual DVD (JSAT, EoB, PtEtSS, BoG), I'm not planning on purchasing any other releases of the series unless we get a good, consistent release of everything else; preferably Dragon Boxes for DB, GT and the movies at this point. I really don't want to purchase Z again.
Once Kai finishes up with the as of yet unofficially announced Buu Arc, I may purchase the streamlined version of the series if we get a cheap, bundled release a lot further down the road.
For the Manga, I would probably buy an English Kanzenban, physical release if it remained uncut and had an altered translation to remain a bit more consistent (stuff like Piccolo's flowery dialogue mainly, but also the hope of fixing other little things like Kakarotto for the sake of Vegetto). Might also buy the Full Color manga if we ever get digital volume released for the full series over here. I don't need to take up more space than that with physical volumes, so a digital English release for the color edition would be fine with me.

For personal purposes some do, but most use HDD(s) instead.Duo wrote:I wouldn't be surprised to see Blu-rays being used to package a ton of SD content on them in the future, but I guess we aren't at that point yet.
Blu-ray still isn't in everyone's homes like DVD is and so that makes it unreadable if there isn't a BDP.

Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
Dragon Boxes 1-7
Dragon Ball GT: Complete Series (green brick)
Dragon Ball Movie Pack
History of Trunks/Bardock Father of Goku: Steel Book Double Feature DVD (widescreen)
History of Trunks single DVD (full screen)
Bardock Father of Goku single DVD (full screen)
Ocean Dub 3 movie pack.
Orange Bricks 1-5, but I sold them long ago...
Also plan on buying DBZ Kai on Blu-ray (most likely), seasons 1-4
Although it's not an English release, aside from all of the above I also own a Dragon Ball Z OVA collection, containing the new Episode of Bardock, Yo! The Return of Son Goku and Friends, and the updated Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans.
I also have a pretty crappy copy of the original Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans. Barely watchable, but at least I can say I have seen it!
For the manga:
Viz release 1-42 ( The second, slightly more edited release...)
Dragon Ball VizBigs 1-5
Dragon Ball: Complete Illustrations
Plan on purchasing Z VizBigs very soon. ( Also all of the Daizenshuu guidebooks, in used, good condition )
Now, like many of us here, I'm patiently awaiting Dragon Boxes for the Z movies and original Dragon Ball. I don't care about a GT Dragon Box since for one, I doubt we will ever get one, and the Green Bricks are just fine for me.
So more Dragon Boxes are what I will definitely buy. Blue Bricks and Z Movie Packs will suffice if it comes to that, but when I do eventually own the Z movies and original Dragon Ball anime, I will pretty much be done and would own the ENTIRE anime, including the movies, the TV specials, and the TV series. I'm not interested in getting anything on Blu-ray, except for Kai.
O yea, Almost forgot about Battle of Gods...I'll surely pick that up whenever possible.

Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
I thought the Bricks were the best we'd ever get so I resigned to buying them, and discarded my old singles.
Now I have the complete Dragon Box collection, and a handful of the movies I got in the Steelbooks before I stopped anticipating a Movies Dragon Box (because the original press release mentioned them)
I also currently have all of Kai so far on Blu-ray in the original releases from FUNi (so my Parts 1-4 have the Yamamoto Score)
I'm currently perfectly fine with both releases for Z and Kai respectively.
Now, I'm perfectly happy waiting to see if FUNi ever does a DBox release of the Movies, Dragon Ball, and even GT.
I hate GT and would never purchase it otherwise, but if FUNi puts out a Dragon Box of it, I'll purchase it to support the DBox format. Otherwise, I'm just gonna wait now for either a Blu-ray boxed set of the movies, or a DBox release of either The Movies or DB. Might bite the bullet and get the Bricks and movie boxed set sometime later, but I'm holdin' out hope for DBoxes.

Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
I obviously don't have a problem with the quality. I said we got the Dragon Boxes without sacrificing the quality but I wouldn't have wanted them to put the English BGM on it and have the PQ go down.. So I'm happy with having my "perfect" Japanese release and waiting for my "perfect" funimation English dub release.dbboxkaifan wrote:The PQ of Dragon Box Z looks superb to me and tweaking the HDTV settings a bit improves it even more to enjoy the experience.I would have stopped at the Dragon Boxes if they had just added the English and Japanese BGM without sacrificing quality. Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
Well for me I started collecting with the Orange Bricks, buying season 5 first lol, but then I got word of the Dragon Box and started buying those. I have Boxes 1,3 and 4. I ended up buying season 9 of the Orange bricks because I wanted to watch the Boo saga again and I didn't feel like waiting for DBox 7, but anyways to answer the original question I will stop buying after I complete my Dragon Box collection minus Box 2 you guys weren't kidding, that shit is freaking 500 bucks!! I just have to settle with season 3 of the Orange Bricks.
So far I have :
Blue Brick seasons 1 and 2.. I will complete this collection and that'll be that for the first half of DB.
Orange Brick seasons 5 and 9. Will buy season 3 to fill that ridiculous gap of DBox 2.
Green Brick season 2.. I will buy season 1 and that'll be that for GT.
Dragon Box 1, 3 and 4.. I'll buy 5, 6 and 7 and that'll be that for Z.
Dont care too much for Kai so I'll pass on that. Oh yeah i'll buy the movie packs as well.
Once my collection is complete i'll be done buying Dragon Ball on video until one or two major things happen.
1. Somehow stander dvd format becomes completely obsolete to the point where I have no choice but to move up to the next format and dvd players become extinct.
2. The success of Battle of Gods spawns a new arc or something.

Waiting until a full Blu-Ray release is done for Z. Not buying the Orange Bricks and the Dragon Box is too expensive.
I also plan on eventually getting the Japanese comics once I learn the Japanese language.
I need to get the movies as well (particularly 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and Battle of Gods).

Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
I've bought countless DVDs and VHSs over the years, many of which I've sold off at one point or another. What will remain in my collection are...
Dragon Box 1-7
Ocean Movie 1-3 Boxset
DBZ Level 1.1 & 1.2
Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! DVD
I plan on buying the current movie Blu-rays at some point if Funi doesn't release something better, and I'll be picking up the Original Broadcast Ocean release if it's actually real.

Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
As far as putting any new money in Funimation's pocket--the ONLY way I'd buy a remastered blu ray release of Z is if Toei somehow secures better audio masters like the ones Kei17 possesses. The Dragonboxes have good enough picture quality to enjoy watching the japanese version in its all glorious, craptastic mono telephone muffled quality. Otherwise, an HD upgrade in picture only for me is pretty pointless. Espesically since Kai actually is an HD remaster(of sorts), while offering a great dub and much better pacing of the story compared to Z to boot.
So, besides Kai Buu, I'm patiently waiting on Funi to release either a Dragonball Dragonbox, or Dragonbox: The Movies. Oh, and I will most likely pick up the Ocean re-release. Too cool to pass up.

Re: How many English releases will you own before you stop?
I think I'm done as far as Z goes. The FUNi Dragon Boxes are mostly ideal.
I'm happy with my DB blue bricks. I might double dip if they release the Dragon Box version of that someday, and only if my wallet will allow it.
I'm planning to get the GT green bricks someday. I'm so "meh" about it, however, that I might never get around to it.
The only reason I'd get Kai would be for the English dub. But it's unlikely that FUNi included closed captioning on the Kai sets, so that's pretty much out of the question. Stupid of them, too, because it was captioned on Nicktoons. It kind of astounds me that their anime DVDs don't tend to include CC. It would be so frickin' easy to add. A deafie must have run over Gen Fukunaga's dog or something.
I'd probably double-dip on the entire manga if Viz ever introduces a better English translation and no censorship. Till then, I'll stick to my old stack of yellowing thin volumes.
I'll definitely buy up Dragon Box: the Movies if it's ever released in one volume. I don't want to spend energy and money buying broken volumes of that. The movies are not good enough for that kind of effort. Plus -- I only have so much shelf space!
