Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods"

So anyway, SSG involves the other pure hearted Saiyans giving power to Goku, but apparently it's somehow different than just gathering up everyone's power (ala DBZ movie 8, I suppose). There's actually a failed first attempt at creating SSG, before they realize they need a total of 6 Saiyans. Goku's power gets way bigger, but Piccolo says that rather than becoming a god he's just gathered up everyone's power, and he can't win like that. They try again with Videl/Pan, and it works (Kuririn says he can't even tell how powerful Goku is now, apparently a callback to the idea of gods' having special ki regular folks can't sense).

So it really is some kind of magical transformation.
More than reaching a new level of Super Saiyajin, it makes more sense that Goku simply became a higher being, truly a god of the Saiyajins. Interesting...
So, this only reinforces my believe that they should've dropped the "Super" from the name, and call the transformation simply, the "Saiyajin god" form

This concept is becoming more and more cool to me. It's like a chance to disregard the former tiers of power in the series and start something anew.

Vegeta took on Ginyu in Goku's body, who couldn't do shit with it, and Ginyu in his own body after it was already heavily damaged. Goku easily swatted aside Final Form Freeza's beams.

There's no way Vegeta is anywhere near as powerful as Goku at that point in the story. There's no logic to it.

Find me the page in the manga where somebody said Vegeta was at 250,000.

Ginyu was heavily damaged? Last I checked he just had a small hole in his chest, his power level didn't decrease. Goku swatting Freeza's death beam was after his Zenkai... Yeah cause you know Vegeta taking on Freeza's first form totally means he has a power level smaller than 90,000. I don't have to bring up the manga, I have the Daizenshuus. Vegeta has to be at least 200,000 to fight a suppressed Freeza, whom I feel was using half his strength, 265,000.

Me too. I'm curious though, did Toriyama actually do any design work for Super Saiyan God? We haven't seen a Toriyama Super Saiyan God sketch to my knowledge, so maybe all the "After SS3, I wanted to pare it down to the absolute limit" talk was literally just that? Did he only advise Yamamuro on what ideas he thought should be included?

Yamamuro says that Toriyama came up with a picture of Super Saiyan God that was completely different than Yamamuro's own initial muscular, cloaked design. They went back and forth like this a bit before settling on the final design. Toriyama was insistent on the form not being really muscular.

Oh, and initially Beers was going to fight everyone with a spoon or fork, but Yamamuro thought it would be hard for him to fight like that, so he suggested switching it to chopsticks.

Vegeta could not possibly be more powerful than Goku after Goku arrived on Namek, even after the senzu. Because after the senzu there was still the fight with Baata, Jeice, and Ginyu. If Vegeta were up to fighting Baata and Jeice, he would have done it himself. Goku took them both on and beat them. Vegeta fought and beat Jeice, but Jeice had already been tenderized by Goku.

Vegeta would have made a big deal about being more powerful than Goku if he had powered up so much after the senzu. Instead he lets Goku fight Jeice and Ginyu and sneaks around Freeza's ship until he can get the jump on Jeice. There was no way he was stronger than Goku.


On another note, the soundtrack to this movie seems a little off.

Is it sad that I'm just as interested in all these little concept tidbits as I am the actual movie? As much as I like what I see in the finished movie, I can't help but wonder what it would have been like if the original version is what had been animated. xD

That's great but that's not what I'm referring to. You can't honestly tell me with a straight face that a level under 90K can stand up to someone who's full power is 530,000 right? Yeah I thought not, Vegeta's level has to be at the very least 250,000 after the whole Ginyu switch fiasco.

I can see how muscular, cloaked ssjg Goku (who in my head-canon would still have the pink hair just because X3 ) would fit with the earlier, darker version of the movie plot, but I really like how just out there the final design is, so I'm happy the movie ended up the way it ended up.

I really like hearing about the "this almost happened" stuff though.

I wish there was a drawing of original!Birusu somewhere; I want to do a cat!Birusu vs lizard!Birusu drawing, but I'm going to have to make up the latter's design from scratch since there's no rough sketches of him.

EDIT: Listening to the soundtrack now...the Bingo song: Suitably epic for the most part, the Pilaf tracks were very interesting. I think Kei17 was right though, the movie does seem to jump between light-hearted and serious-epic without any sort of natural transition.

Am I the only one that's getting an Faulconer/Menza/Johnson/Levy vibe from this soundtrack. OK, I'll leave.
