Favorite Saga in the original Dragonball

Post by samuraix123 » Wed Mar 27, 2013 8:26 pm

Hello Everyone!
What's your favorite saga in the original Dragonball series? Can I say, ''Which Saga was written better?'' I'm really excited about buying the blue season sets so I can finely watch the original. I've grown tired of waiting for Funimation to release the Dragon-boxes. I'll get them when they release them but I'm ready to start the original series and I don't feel like waiting :P Seeing pictures like this makes me laugh

Also does the original series have an old style Kung fu movie kinda feel? because when I watch the world tournaments, I get that kinda feel. :D
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Ugh. I utterly despise the term "saga" to denote a story arc. It's as if nobody knows a thing about narrative structure. Funimation started this crap AND "season" for everything.

Also, everything in the manga falls under "original Dragon Ball".

He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

The franchise itself has this feeling so yes. I would say that maybe the people who worked on the first series were more aware of DB being that sort of story and put in a lot of fun references to kung fu movies like Yamucha saying a line from Enter the Dragon and the Golden Harvest opening for the Tenkaichi Budokai episodes.

Pretty sure "saga" predates the Funi dub.

Anyway, Piccolo/23rd Tenkaichi Budokai is overall my favorite part of the entire franchise, full-stop.

The Red Ribbon arc is the best part of the entire series, ergo, it is also the best part of Goku's childhood years.

Hmm... I enjoy the Piccolo Daimao arc, but the animation for that arc is sub-par compared to the rest of the series. I love watching the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai!
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

My favorite stretch of the original series is easily the Piccolo Daimao arc up through the 23rd Budokai/Piccolo Jr. arc. The stakes are raised, the art takes a noticeable leap in quality (at least in the manga), Toriyama has found his groove in terms of storytelling, and the serious moments are more balanced with the humor.

I'm glad there are people out there who favor the Red Ribbon Army stuff; I'm glad there are people who can manage to stay awake watching it all... Taopaipai is the highlight of that whole arc.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I'm gonna say the 22nd Budokai, re-reading the manga and that part was just awesome, but I loved all of Dragonball except the Red Ribbon arc to a lesser degree.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Yeah but "saga" just sounds more cool then "arc".

For the original Dragon Ball? The Piccolo Daimao arc, by far. In fact it's pretty much the only arc I remember. Things started getting intense, with main characters dying left and right and the world being taken over by demons. Also King Piccolo is, in my opinion, the series' best villain.

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

A tie between the 22nd and 23rd Budokais, I was on the edge of my seat for both of the final fights even though I still sort of knew the outcome. There's a good amount of tension, action and strategy that always makes them enthralling. Plus, I like the fact that despite losing the last two, Goku was pretty much required to win the 23rd otherwise the Earth would be screwed, a nice twist on the whole tournament concept.

Choosing a favourite saga would be like choosing a favourite child....its not a question I like answering.

But I'll go with the Pilaf arc, since it started it all.

Definitely the last one. Won't say saga or arc because that'll become a never ending nerd fight...

I LOVE the whole aura the the original Dragonball gives. Its my favorite. Love it even more than "Z"! Personally the "world tornament saga" and the "King piccolo saga" are the best.
