I can get behind maybe wording things differently so it flows better, but omitting or changing entire phrases from what Akira Toriyama wrote into his story is kind of even more insulting than editing titties and guns. I think you'd be able to get the gist of what's happening from just looking at the pictures, the important thing is getting the gist of how the person who wrote the manga intended you to feel when writing his dialogue and story. And regardless of accuracy, Viz's translation is just downright awkward, a lot moreso than if they just went with Toriyama's dialogue.Bussani wrote:What you mean is they're more literal. Keep in mind that Herms' translations in the Strength Checker are more literal than his translations normally would be because they're intended to be used in debates. Would that make them good translations for Viz to use? Maybe you think they would, but I'm not sure everyone would agree. Being so literal that they can be used in debates about strength isn't that important to everyone, and to a reader who just wants to enjoy the story and get the gist of everything, Viz's translations aren't that bad.Nex Carnifex wrote:I want to read the story how it was originally intended, with accurate translations. Unfortunately fan translations are better than Viz's retarded one, trust me I've compared it to Herm's translations which somehow mimic fan translations, probably because they are accurate, oh yeah, of course that's what it means, which also means Viz's aren't.
I guess different fans have different needs. I wouldn't mind if Viz produced a slightly better translation, because there's definitely room for improvement, but I'm sure I'd be happy with less than you're wishing for.

Re: Viz to re-release Dragon Ball manga
Ok, what's this teen section thing about? Bookstores I bought the manga in have manga alongside other graphic novels next to sci-fi sections. Not really by a kids or teen section.Fizzer wrote:I think the kanzenban covers would look just fine in the teen section, they're already much sexier and more grown up than the tankobon covers.
Re: Viz to re-release Dragon Ball manga
I have the same experience, but since people were talking about adult/teen sections in manga/comic stores I figured they must tend to separate manga aimed at different age groups into different sections over in the States. They don't here, they just have one tiny manga/graphic novel/comic/sci-fi/fantasy section in standard book shops, but they must do it somewhere.Super Sonic wrote:Ok, what's this teen section thing about? I dont understand Viz media's practices. Some printings of Dragonball are more censored then others.Another thing that bothers me is Viz will release manga like Black Lagoon and Tenjho Tenge completely uncut with all of the nudity and violence yet they wont release Dragonball in an uncut format.

Re: Viz to re-release Dragon Ball manga
Do we have any verification that this re-release of the original Dragon Ball manga will be unedited at all? If not, then I don't see a point in investing.
Re: Viz to re-release Dragon Ball manga
Maybe it is in some places, but there have been plenty of others where I've read one of their lines, checked it against the Japanese version, and been surprised to find just how much of the subtext and implications they got right. It's hard not to lose that stuff in translation, but they pull it off a surprising amount. But then they change certain other lines for no reason that I can see, so yeah. I think Herms' rating of 7/10 seems pretty on the mark. Definitely room for improvement, but it gets the job done so long as you're not looking to dissect lines in detail. But if you are, then yeah, you need something else.Nex Carnifex wrote:I can get behind maybe wording things differently so it flows better, but omitting or changing entire phrases from what Akira Toriyama wrote into his story is kind of even more insulting than editing titties and guns. As far as I'm aware, all we know is "they're re-releasing it."Choujin Daizenshuu wrote:Do we have any verification that this re-release of the original Dragon Ball manga will be unedited at all? If not, then I don't see a point in investing.

Re: Viz to re-release Dragon Ball manga
Now that I think of it, the re-release might just be like that. Kinda like how DC recently re-released new gns of the "Knightfall" saga. This time around, while like its previous gn release doesn't really have "The Search" and "Knightquest", it had more stories of Azrael and his increasing instability. As for things Viz has done, I know a few from the SJ line that was in the magazine cleaned some of the magazine's potty language, but also the VizBig of Kenshin fixed the typos that the gns had, as well as had historical info at the end of the volumes. (I still didn't buy them as I was too cheap). And the Bleach 3-in-1 corrected Orihime's brother's name to Sora rather than its first release that preceded the anime in Japan's calling him "Kakei".Pokewhiz7 wrote:As far as I'm aware, all we know is "they're re-releasing it."Choujin Daizenshuu wrote:Do we have any verification that this re-release of the original Dragon Ball manga will be unedited at all? Depends on the size of the store, or rather, how many shelves they have to work with. I know they used to have a "teen manga" section in the bookstores separate of the regular manga section back when it was more books and less "stuff". "Kids manga" is usually in with the regular kids books, but the only stuff that really shows up there is Pokemon, Zelda, and that Fluffmallow-whatever-it's-called one. (Cinnamonroll? I don't remember.)
You'll also have the occasional random "still labelled teen" manga that ends up in regular Teen instead of with manga (like I've seen them do with Ouran and Tokyo Mew Mew for unknown reasons).
As for Viz's DB manga getting a re-release...I already have what I want of the manga, so it doesn't matter to me what they do, but I still think it would be nice if they could produce either an uncut release or their version of the kanzenban for those who are waiting for such a release.
(Also the rest of the daizenshuu would be great, but not holding my breath.)
On hiatus.
Re: Viz to re-release Dragon Ball manga
So since these have the kanzenban covers are they going to have the kanzenban contents? and has it been confirmed if it will be uncut and better translated as well?

I can't stand the current Viz translation and censorship. If they release a new translation with no censoring I might buy it.

There is a fan translation in progress that is really great, but they're only on volume 10 I think.
Re: Viz to re-release Dragon Ball manga
Distributing that version is probably illegal though. If that creates enough of a problem for Viz then they might try to stop it.UpFromTheSkies wrote:There is a fan translation in progress that is really great, but they're only on volume 10 I think.

If Viz wants to stop it, then they should put out a quality translation without any censorship.Fulicer wrote:Distributing that version is probably illegal though. Yeah... that's... not how intellectual property rights work in the real world...

Re: Viz to re-release Dragon Ball manga
Their current DB releases have quality translation and hardly any relevant censorship/edits at all. Maybe you should just appreciate what you have access to and its quality instead of losing yourself on the details that don't even matter, especially since most countries don't have a completed domestic release of Dragon Ball at all (manga or anime).UpFromTheSkies wrote:If Viz wants to stop it, then they should put out a quality translation without any censorship.Fulicer wrote:Distributing that version is probably illegal though. Re: Viz to re-release Dragon Ball manga
Also, can we try to avoid necroposting? It's already been confirmed (and discussed quite a bit in a much more recent topic) that this release will be the cheap "3-in-1" edition with bottom-quality paper, and (inexplicably) the Kanzenban covers.
