I agree, the film has a lot of similarities to DBGT. Pan being a "main" character, Gohan as a Super Saiyan again, gathering around Goku to give him energy, etc.FindKenshi wrote:Battle of Gods is basically DBGT condensed

Not to mention that both the movie and GT have dragon balls in them. The similarities are uncanny.

Y'know, if you do fall behind there is a website that covers all of the important details covered in this thread. And if you don't wanna read, there's also a podcast that covers all of the news weekly as well as occasionally discussing topics that relate to the movie
Surprised that people haven't been talking more about the weekend numbers. I'm so excited about the fact that the movie absolutely destroyed Toei's expectations!

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

3 of those apply pretty well to the Saiyan arc. Heck, that last one applies to practically every story arc from the Saiyans on out...but not GT, really. GT doesn't start its power inflation until quite a few episodes in. We don't even see Super Saiyan 3 until Goku fights Vegeta-Baby.FindKenshi wrote:Battle of Gods is basically DBGT condensed

I guess this has already been pointed out many times, but you know, Pilaf and his gang have become young, which contradicts their very aged looks in GT. I didn't see anything new that can really be connected with GT in BoG.

If one wants to see GT as canon there is still what? At least 9 or so years after BoG that GT takes place in that Pilaf and company could accidentally wish for themselves to be big again.kei17 wrote:I guess this has already been pointed out many times, but you know, Pilaf and his gang have become young, which contradicts their very aged looks in GT. It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

They'll wish themselve to be old. And Shenron can grant this wish since it's a different one than the one they made (it's the opposite).

1) Pilaf and Crew are kids, and don't seem to want to be old again, they just wanted money from what I'm recalling. Now there's the Mai and Trunks thing too.FindKenshi wrote:Battle of Gods is basically DBGT condensed

2) SSJG (Goku's red transformation), is above Vegetto who is "perhaps stronger than a SSJ4.", which to me puts him above SSJ4. Not to mention that his Ki now can't be sensed by anybody besides Gods.
3) Gohan and Kuririn gave Piccolo their energy in the Freeza arc, it's never been shown that it can't be done, actually they hold Piccolos hand when they do it, just like in the movie when everybody gives Goku their energy. Also Goku doesn't like borrowing his friends power as it's not his own, which he states.
4) As we know, Toriyama wanted their to be more fight scenes, but the movie would've been like 120 minutes or something. Also the Boo arc was all about the Saiyans, and really minus Vegeta, nobody does anything to Beers until Goku becomes a SSJG.
5) Toriyama never said a bad thing about GT, he called it a side story sure, but not in a bad way at all, actually everything else he said about the series was good. But I guess he can't bad mouth it, it was probably getting him quite a bit of money.
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
You can dream anything and stretch things if you want, but so far Pilaf and his gang making their appearances have nothing to do with GT's plot, and their younger appearances rather imply that Toriyama didn't care the consistency with GT in a way. The scriptwriter does not seem to care about GT as well. Deal with it.

I don't think that he wants to say that GT and BoG take place in the same continuity, he just points out their similarities.kei17 wrote:You can dream anything and stretch things if you want, but so far Pilaf and his gang making their appearances have nothing to do with GT's plot, and their younger appearances rather imply that Toriyama didn't care the consistency with GT in a way. James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods earns an estimated $7 million
The entertainment trade news source Variety reported on Sunday that the anime film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods ranked #5 in the estimated overseas box office chart this past weekend. With a projected box office take of US$7.0 million, it is the top-grossing non-American film on the chart, after G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Croods, Jack the Giant Slayer, and Oz the Great and Powerful.
While the other four films are playing in over 50 territories each, Variety is basing its estimate of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods' performance on 328 screens in just one country: Japan. 16 IMAX theaters earned US$450,000 for a per-screen average of US$28,000.
Oricon reported that Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods' box office total as of 1:00 p.m. on its first day were 47.3% of One Piece Film Z's total during the same timeframe. One Piece Film Z's estimated final box office total is 6.85 billion yen (about US$73 million). Based on that measure, Oricon projects that Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods will exceed Toei's target of 3 billion yen (about US$32 million).
The top-grossing film outside the United States this past weekend is G.I. Joe: Retaliation, with US$80 million on 7,775 locations in 53 countries.

I don't think this devil symbol has any evil connotation in the DB universe. And anyway I like how how it's a similar color scheme to the clothes she wore at the 28th tournament at the end of DBZ:FindKenshi wrote:I'm kinda disturbed that Videl is wearing devil clothes.. Oh well, there goes my thought down the drain. Still, this goes to show that even on the manga there are discrepancies, so really, Battle of Gods having time inconsistencies is nothing new, or rather, is another sign of how involved Toriyama was in the making of the movieHerms wrote: Yeah, in the manga Raditz never says when Planet Vegeta was destroyed in relation to Goku's birth, and nothing in the Saiyan arc rules out the idea that the planet was destroyed years after Goku was born. The Bardock special was the first thing to show the planet's destruction happening right after Goku's birth. However, even in the manga during the Freeza arc, right before Freeza starts to transform into his final form he notes that he destroyed Planet Vegeta 30 years ago...which is actually too long ago, since Goku should be only about 25 by then, and obviously he couldn't have been born after the planet was destroyed.
And also, I'm ecstatic that Battle of Gods had such a good opening. If it does pretty well in Japan, I'd imagine Toei and even Fox would feel pretty confident about bringing it to the international market, sooner rather than later. Fingers crossed!
