Oh, I forgot to mention I assumed that about Paikuhan! Even after seeing his head I didn't realize he wasn't Namekian.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

The very first time I saw DBZ was way back when I was younger, with my cousins. We saw, I remember, an episode in the early Boo arc, on one of FUNimation's old singles. I wasn't really paying attention since I didn't really like Dragon Ball at the time, but I caught a few seconds of footage on Kaio's planet, and I saw Goku with his halo, and I assumed there were two Goku's, and that the one with the halo was his spirit or guardian angel or something.

I am also guilty of believing Paikuhan was a Namekian, even during my first run of the series.
So mondo lame.

This one I have told a million times, but I assumed that Trunks and 17 were the same guy.
Trunks was simply 17 reincarnated and brought back from the afterlife.
Those were the first episodes I watched of Dragonball, ever.

That Gohan was Ssj2 against Dabra (no I don't care about what you think, leave it to another thread).

That Mystic was the official name of Gohan's form.

That in Hyper Dimension, Gohan was actually Yamcha. Gotenks and Vegetto were two new Saiyajins, allies though.
Buu I didn't know but I didn't care much about him so I had no theory about who he was, no more than him being fugly as hell.

As a kid, I thought there was a Dragon Ball A - Y. I remember so confused on what happen to the other Dragon Ball shows before DBZ  .

- 17 and 18 were twins
- Cell was an alien
- Majin Boo was a living pile of bubblegum
- Paikhaun was a Namekian
- Mystic was the official term for Gohan's power up
- SSJ3 made the user act like an Oozaru

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I thought during the freeza arc when Cpt. Ginyu traded bodies with Bulma that he was going to have an impact with the Goku and Freeza fight. But he didn't haha

Other than the obvious ones (Tullece being Goku's brother, Pikuhan being Namekian), I used to think that GT was originally a manga in addition to the other series. I was only familiar with the show at that point, so when I saw that the American Shounen Jump magazines at the Books-A-Million had DBZ chapters in them, I would always wonder how long it would take for the manga to reach the GT stuff. I also thought for some weird reason that since Funimation had the licenses to both Dragon Ball and YuYu Hakusho that they were both by the same author. My last embarrassing assumption was during my Narutard days. I actually thought that Naruto could take DBZ characters... Yeah. Blind fanboyism at its finest. Don't laugh! We were all stupid kids at one time!

Funnny, I assumed the opposite about Venom (that he absorbed people like Majin Boo).
In some continuities, like the Ultimate Universe, this is true.

- I thought that DBZ would end with the defeat of Vegeta, and shortly after that I thought it would end with the defeat of Freeza.

- I thought, because I'd head of SSJ 1-4, and the FUNimation dub called SSJ2 "ascendant Saiyan" that there was Super Saiyan 1-4, then Ascendant Saiyan 1-4, then Hyper Saiyan (or something, whatever I thought SSJ3 was called...) 1-4.

- I thought that Cell was Android #21 and Kuririn and #18's daughter was Android #22.

- I thought Dragon Ball GT was what Dragon Ball Z was called in the USA.

- When I first started DBZ, I thought that King Yemma and Ox-King were the same person, which was confusing.

- For a brief while I thought that Vegeta was known as The Cheater.

- I thought that Goku's father was a brilliant scientist.

I thought Kuririn was a child and that Yamucha and Goku were related.

Oh, also, I thought that the "Z" in "Dragon Ball Z" was just a 90s EXTREME way of saying "Dragon Balls", replacing the "s" with a "z" to sound EXTREEEEME.

"Dragon BallZ? That's so lame."

18 is older than 17.
But they are twins, if memory serves. 18 describes them as "futago no kyōdai" ("twin siblings"), but with kyōdai written 姉弟 ("older-sister, younger-brother") to emphasize that she's the older of the two, if only by a few minutes.

Just from watching Japanese TV, arguing over who's older (and the privileges that go along with such) seems to be a common form of bickering between twins in Japan.

Freeza was a woman (blame the dub)

Goku was human (I started watching after Raditz was defeated but before he got to kaio).

Trunks' name was "Trumps"

Buu would look like the cyberdemon from Doom except without the machine parts

Krillin never learned martial arts and would be a lot stronger if he was serious about fighting

Ain't that like, universal?
Twins in general have to share things a lot. Trying to use which of them who is older is IMO pretty much common among all twins, just to be able to get better privileges.
I am not Japanese, but a twin nevertheless, and I grew up in such an environment. It's pretty much sibling rivalry to the extreme. :D

I'm pretty sure 17 and 18 are indeed twins made into cyborgs.

When I was probably like 4 or 5 I was watching DBZ with my brother and I thought Vegeta's name was actually Mageta because he had the M on his forehead, I think I also thought that because kids have a tendency to mis pronounce things.
