Eh, I'm not too bothered by it. I didn't like it in that particular instance because it seemed like Goku and all didn't need skill at all but seeing someone take down a way stronger opponent just because of skill is often pretty bullshitty what with the tendancy of writers to exaggeration.

The martial arts are present in the series, it's just that they're never acknowledged properly.

I think the Martial Arts still play a role in the Z-era, not as much as the original series, but still you can't deny it .. i hate how people saying "Dragon Ball Z is just bunch of bash and explosions

There is still martial arts, its just the interesting techniques and emphasis on them are gone.
