No offense but Yaoi fics make me cringe. Just doesn't fit the characters at all.

A DBZ novel would be interesting, but it would have to be proffesional. Otherwise no sale.

I'm in the 0.0001%(or whatever) range as far as my fanfics go in my opinion, but I only have 1 so far. :D

Not so much that it's yaoi, but the fact that fans pretty much kill the actual characters' personalities and replace them with what they dream they are is what's annoying as hell. o_O

Seriously, why the hell is it that most yaoi writers (which tend to be overweight, lonely and undersexed girls D:) take fierce male rivalry as a sign of wanting to bang eachother? Is there some misunderstanding that these girls just don't get guys? >_>;

Holy Shit! An unautorized guide to Dragonball Z! I actually have that book sitting on my shelf. That is the biggest piece of trash that ever was graced with the title of Dragonball. I bought it without flipping through it thinking it was either informative, or contained some opinions or insight into SOMETHING. It didn't. It was basically a TERRIBLE summary of the Ocean dubbed episodes and then some fansubs that they got their hands on.

I can't believe someone else actually knew of it. Even all the crappy Pojo guides were 100X better than this. The woman had no idea what was going on most of the time. I always thought of contacting the publishing company about writing my own guide, because I could write something a million times better off the top of my head alone.

Just because I feel like ranting about this thing maquerading as a giude so much, I was going to scan some pages for a good laugh, but my scanner isn't hooked up, and this really isn't that big of a deal... So Whatever :?

I saw that unofficial guide in a comic shop looked at it opened laughed and put it down. I'm told there's a Sailor Moon one that's as bad.
Novels are a big part of merchandising, especially with multimedia stuff like Boogiepop and .hack . It's only recently companies are releasing them. There were even some American made Pokemon ones which were terrible, so lets hope no DBZ novels. That how to draw book was bad enough 0-0

A quick run down on yaoi fiction: (as I'm obsessed over psychology)

Basicly it's yuri, for girls. Rest assured that almost 100% of girls into yaoi are into it for the fact they are heavily attracted to men. It just applies the 'what's better than 1 supermodel? TWO supermodels!' theorem. *cheesy grin*

Oh; the concept of two people that fight/hate eachother/etc getting together is the thin line of 'love and hate'; it's part of human nature (in key with the theory of evolution, so if you don't believe that you don't have to believe me) where most primate species when experiencing agression experience... uh, 'peppyness' similtaniously. The extremity of this is in 'Bonobos'. (That's the basics so I'll leave it there ^^; )

The problem arises in 'self-insertion'; I'm not talking just the blatant Mary Sues here. You'll notice in almost all fanfictions; (not just yaoi, not just romance even) that a character developes traits VERY similar to that of the Author. (resulting in the dreaded OOCness) so, say, Bulma in a B/V romance.. does she act like Bulma from DBZ? Noooo. Or Yamcha in your standard buddy-buddy fic may start jamming on the guitar and listening to the latest bands like... the author. It is most noteable in yaoi fanfictions, as yaoi is a fandom primarily by and for the female audience, because the character is -male- and their author is female, thus resulting in a female personality in a male body...

That's the problem for most fics -ever-

There's very few fics which don't have this problem. They're usually in the comedic genres, as many scenarios would be very much ruined by having a character protected by the author's ego and non-oblivious to the circumstances.

As it stands most great stories are written with a level of detatchment. (Even Akira Toriyama himself had no qualms about killing Goku) Where characters have their own personalities, rather than embodying the author's personality.

In simplified terms, it's the difference between:

(self-insertion to heavy level)
Vegeta: I'll KILL you! How dare you defeat me! You're nothing but a worm!
Goku: *curls up into ball and plugs ipod in, pulls on a dark shirt and listens to rock music* ...
-and-
(non-self-insertion)
Vegeta: I'll KILL you! How dare you defeat me! You're nothing but a worm!
Goku: Heeey, hey! Calm down Vegeta, I'm sure you'll do better next time if you train harder. *light smile*

... did I just ramble? o_o sorry about that.

You live in the UK and saw a Dragonball-related book?! Impossible! What shop was this? I'd crap my pants if there was anything to do with Dragonball in a shop.

Are you lying?

"Find out all there is to know about the hotter-than-hot phenomenon called DragonBall Z. Written by a mother and ten-year-old son team, you'll get all the fabulous DBZ facts from a kid's perspective! So DBZ fans unite-and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime as you read about:

This is why being a DragonBall fan in North America is a joke. How does that garbage get published?!

The real question is, how the hell did they make money off of this?! Especially when all the reviews on that Amazon page are 4 to 5 stars. x_X

Nekoni, that was actually pretty accurate. It's pretty much why I've given up on reading fanfics a long time ago, considering they make the characters closer to their own personality than the real ones or they change them completely.

I know for a fact that Cloud and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII want to stab eachother with their swords and kill one another, not stab eachother with their meat swords. :(

Though I'd say the worst would be Fullmetal Alchemist fanfics. You've got fans writing about incest, yaoi, necrophilia or all three combined. x_X;

The perfect author is one with split personality disorder.

 That book thing's pretty scary... I must agree that it IS amazing to find DBZ merchandise in England. I was once bought 2 figurines from an English shop and nearly died. (ironicly the Vegetas were all sold out) It's nothing like -France- (there's so much DBZ merchandise here it's like a second Japan- why the other day I even saw a--- Oh I'll save that for another thread.)

Does anyone else here feel the need to vomit after reading that book except?

I'm actually curious to read it just to see what ridiculous things are written in there. Some of my guesses of things stated in that book:

"People in Dragonball never die or get injured. They are simply transported to another dimension or saved by parachutes and good luck."

"Dragonball Z is good wholesome fun for the whole family. Much less violent than those terrible Gi Joe and Ninja Turtles cartoons"

"Special Beam Cannon or Corkscrew attack? An unscientific poll."

"T i e n is a namekian. Proof: his arm can grow back, he stated so himself."

"Burgers or hot dogs? What's Goku's favorite food?"

"The explanation of how Vegeta killed Grampa Gohan. An objective analysis."

"Dragonball Z: A truly american and patriotic show."

So on and so forth..

Okay, fanboy moment - I actually have a Kame Gi outfit. It's just pants, two shirts and a belt, but it's pretty awesome. I've never worn it though. It's just a backup - in case I need to dess like Goku at some point.

edit: Crap, I can't find the orange overshirt. I'm pretty bummed now.

It's nothing to laught at. I have my Gokuh outfit stowed away somewhere for those especially heroic moments... Seriously, I've been told I make a very hot Gokuh =wink=

Er, anyway yeah. We've all had those moments where we just wanted to melt into the earth and deny any knowledge of the series whatsoever. I remember feeling that way when those weird Legacy of Gokuh game commercials came out as well as when my mom watched a dub episode with me. She just watches to laugh I swear.

I was just kidding anyways, it would be pretty hypcritical of me to judge when I have a similar turtle gi stowed safely away in my closet...

Back on topic, it's pretty sad to see that this kind of fan crap pretty much dominated the market for so long, and there was never any corrected versions released later. I'd still be willing to pay for a complete, profession and comprehensive Dragonball guide, if it was made by people who actually knew what they were talking about...
