Nobody could access the site yesterday. Not even us (except from the back end). I won't go into all the details, but there was a glitch on the main website that inhibited PHP from working correctly and subsequently took down the entire site, which could then only spit out 503 errors. The server itself was fine, and running properly. It just couldn't handle requests. Unfortunately we were all busy and not around computers yesterday, so I couldn't troubleshoot the issue until this morning. I just hope it never happens again because it was a pain in the ass to figure out what the problem was, let alone fixing it.
We did tweet about the downtime to give people a heads up. Checking there is normally a good way to find out if something's really wrong.
