Writers could play with the story and universe to allow for some really fun and creative stories within the spirit of the Dragonball universe. It wouldn't take anything away, all of the other characters would be there. It's just now we don't have to sit through the same Saiyian-Buu template. Also despite my opinion of GT as a whole, I've always liked the characters in fighting games.
My opinion is that they should focus on fewer features but do them perfectly. I think we would both agree that a character creator has a pretty low priority, especially given that there are more important things that need to be improved first. Once they get the basics right, I don't mind if they release a character creator or whatever else some people want.
I think one of the reasons why UT sucked was because they tried to put too much stuff at once. Instead of focusing on making the gameplay as great as possible, they had to sacrifice it for less important things which are ultimately less relevant to a fighting-style game. In other words, a fighting game with a well-designed combat system without a character creator is far more enjoyable in the long run than the one with the character creator but broken/limited combat.
As for the GT characters, it's just my preference. I'd much rather see them putting more effort into making the basic characters (and that also includes their attacks, animations etc) as unique and polished as possible than doing everything repetitive and similar just to have the biggest roster. Again, I don't mind a GT characters DLC-pack to be released after the main game comes out.
