James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Hmm, really? It's quite old and well-known. But, anyway, I'm not directing that at you for saying that. I'm just saying that the idea of any significant improvement, while possible, still fits that saying. You can only get so much improvement out of something that just has no chance of working. You can't change its very nature.ABED wrote:That's the first time I've ever heard that saying. I think Rocketman sums it up pretty well.SSJ4 Furanki wrote:I prefer the dub name of the What-if fusion for Tenshinhan and Yamcha. Tiencha/Tencha fits him better than Yamhan, Yamhan sounds like a Yamcha/Gohan fusion.
Rocketman wrote:Tiencha simply sounds better. Let's take a closer look:
"Yamhan". Look at this pathetic word. A soft little "yh" sound to start, a soft "ah", a gentle hum with "em", then "h", the letter so weak it is classified as voiceless, finishing with a soft sigh and hum with "ah" and "en". There is no power in this word. It hangs limp across the tongue, a disappointment to all.
Now, "Tiencha", there is a word with strength! A mighty "Te" to begin, a solid bridge with "ee", then an explosion with "ch" that echoes into the "ah". This word shall never fail you with its unimprovable irrigidity.
Just look at the companion names, too! "Goku", a hard G and K, "Goten", hard G and T, even "Gohan" keeps the strike of the hard G! "Vegeta/to", "Trunks", "Raditz", "Freeza", "Mister Satan/Hercule", "Nappa", all words with power in them! Then compare to the flaccid "Yamhan" and you shall see who stands taller.
I dunno, Young seems to sound more energetic in the role with maybe an exception being when she had just started voicing Freeza. Newstone sounds more calm and creepy.penguintruth wrote:Linda Young is just a more lizardish sounding Pauline Newstone in the role. And Newstone was wrong for the role, too

Freeza is calm and creepy. He doesn't move around all that much until towards the end of the arc.Young seems to sound more energetic in the role with maybe an exception being when she had just started voicing Freeza. Newstone sounds more calm and creepy.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

It's that rare case, I prefer 99% of the original Japanese names and most of the pronunciations, since the Japanese terms can't really be mispronouced if it's the original. Mr. Satan is one of the few where I ignore the Japanese style pronunciation. Yamhan is the one original name that's always bothered me. I do prefer Tenshinhan to the dub name, but Yamhan just sounds bad.

Is that when Freeza's metaphorically (and in some sense literally) raping Krillin with his horn? If so, that's vicious, even coming from Linda Young.Big Momma wrote:I've stated this unpopular opinion before, but as much as I don't like Linda Young's portrayal....I love that line. Yea I generally go with whatever name suits me. I don't see a major issue with using either name. I prefer Tenshinhan when using his full name but for short I prefer Tien opposed to Ten.

I actually think the idea of an American animated DB cartoon has a lot of potential and if they took an episodic approach they could develop villains like Dr Uiro and Omega Shenlong better.
Re: Unpopular DB opinions
I just think it's hilarious that people dislike Young yet tout Nozawa as ~amazing~, usually by using the same arguments like "sounds like girl!".

The idea was to keep Goku's childish spirit. I'll grant you that they could have done that better (see Mayumi Tanaka's Luffy--amazing), but it's far better then making the chillingly wicked Emperor of the Universe a wise-cracking grandma.Rocketman wrote:I just think it's hilarious that people dislike Young yet tout Nozawa as ~amazing~, usually by using the same arguments like "sounds like girl!".

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
It's not calm enough. When Freeza rips off Nail's arm, he should be matter of fact about it, almost bored. It's a great bit of characterization. Dub Frieza is laughing his head off making dumb jokes.ringworm128 wrote:Linda Young still sounds calm enough it's not like she's "I'M FREEEEEEEEZA GIVE ME YOUR BALLS!!!ABED wrote: I was getting at the fact that Freeza isn't full of energy, he's calm, cool and collected at that point.
And Nozawa gets Goku's personality. It's high, sure, but not feminine, unlike Freeza.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
"Sounds like a girl!" =/= "sounds like a wisecracking, chainsmoking granny", which is literally what peoples' complaints about her are. That's what Young sounds like, and her performance doesn't convey the sadistic gentemanliness of Freeza's character.Rocketman wrote:I just think it's hilarious that people dislike Young yet tout Nozawa as ~amazing~, usually by using the same arguments like "sounds like girl!".
Nozawa does just fine with conveying what Goku is: a goofy idiot. If Nozawa made Goku sound like a wisecracking, chainsmoking granny, the comparison would hold some ground. But she doesn't. So it doesn't. What I find hilarious is the other way around. Most American fans who don't watch the Japanese version cite "Goku sounds like a girl" almost exclusively as their sole reason. It has nothing to do with characterization or anything. It's literally because of the way his (actually quite fitting) voice sounds.

I like Gotenks more than Vegito (a little better)
Re: Unpopular DB opinions
I think Android arc is better than Cell arc. and by the Android arc i mean after Frieza arc finished, until Cell begins his "Cell Games". i still like it thought, but it's one of my least favorite arcs (thought it has an amazing moments like Gohan going SSJ2, Vegeta's rage on Cell)
