Exactly how well do Goku and Vegeta know each other?

While watching DBZ episode 213 today (Funimation Dub, "The Dark Prince Returns"), Goku states that "the Vegeta I know would never do this" in response to his attack against Goku and the slaughtering of the tournament spectators. It got me thinking, just how well do the two actually know one another? How much time have they actually spent together over the course of the series?

* Their initial confrontation and battle of course
* A few minutes of talking after Goku takes out the Ginyu Force
* The instance of Vegeta taking Goku into the rejuvenation chamber
* Some brief dialogue while Vegeta is dying at the hands of Freeza
* That few seconds when Vegeta is brought back and witnesses Super Saiyan Goku vs Freeza (is that in the manga?)
* Small talk during Goku's return to earth
* Talking before entering RoSAT
* Talking after Vegeta & Trunks exit RoSAT
* Talking after Goku & Gohan exit RoSAT
* Cell Games (they don't really even talk?)
* The time spent together during the 25th World Tournament
* Fights within Babidi's ship
* Goku vs. Majin Vegeta
* Fusion into Vegito
* Goku and Vegeta vs. Pure Buu

All in all, they really had not spent much time together over the years. Goku has literally only seen Vegeta kill Nappa and the downed members of the Ginyu Force, the latter of which Goku was not happy about. He wasn't present for Vegeta's battle against Freeza except for the very end, wasn't present when Vegeta killed #19 (obviously), wasn't even in the same dimension when Vegeta took on Cell. Sure, Goku had obviously heard about Vegeta's actions during each conflict, but had only witnessed very few events. They're practically strangers when you look at it this way... what do you guys think? Have you ever thought about or noticed this?

I guess he sensed a change in him. Remember Goku also has some telepathic powers and a keen sense of judgement. He could tell Trunks wouldn't attack him for example.

Now that I think about it I wonder if sensing ki is a form of telepathy.

I like to think Vegeta was involved in ridiculous filler shenanigans with Goku similar to what Piccolo endured during the driving episode. :3

For all the filler this series has, we really don't see all that much of the characters' daily lives outside of major plot events (though I guess it would be deemed too slice-of-life?) so as long as it doesn't contradict later actions or character development you could say they were involved in all sorts of stuff.

I like to think Goku and Vegeta met up a couple of times during the three year wait for the androids. Goku would be interested in seeing how Vegeta adapts to life on Earth (especially considering his knowledge about the future), and Vegeta would be secretly tracking Goku's progress and comparing it to his own. I mean, they had to have some breaks right.

What about when they fused ? Wouldn't they know each other's memory's. So they could better understand each other.

This was demonstrated when Goku was fighting Kid Buu. Vegeta talks about how Goku fights and his reasons ect...

i think the fusion greatly contributed to this, but maybe they don't remember each other's memory's. But sort of understand how the other one works after the fusion.

I think them having fairly little interactions with each other makes their relationship all the more interesting. In Vegeta's mind, he's usually thinking of Kakarotto and is trying to out do him. He probably knows Gokuu more in his own head than he does in real life.


Also, they probably learned a lot about each other from their initial bout. Assessing a person's strength, decisions, technique, persona on the battlefield really allows you to get to know a person on a level different from mere social encounter.
