Because some people unconditionally love the version of DBZ they grew up with (and fight everyone who disagree with them), in addition to it being a gateway anime. It shapes their entire outlook on anime and manga. So, you see fans who dismiss the Japanese version because it's so radically different than FUNimation's early offerings, but then they hate on modern dubs (like Naruto's) that are actually competent. It can also lead to them misunderstanding the DB series, since that dub is all they know. You'll also get fans of the Japanese version who look down on dub fans because of that preference. In general, it's a polarizing series that hasn't had the best treatment outside of Japan, so you have all these different types of fans. DBZ alone has aired in the US on Cartoon Network on and off for around ten years, so there are even people who don't really watch much anime who are fans. They pretty much look at it as an American cartoon, which is why you'll see confusion and outrage targeted at the Kai dub on occasion. Just by virtue of it being so popular, you see the worst of the fanbase more often than not. This is the only forum where I can communicate with Dragon Ball fans and not want to slam my head into the nearest wall.
"Those transformations insane,
They wanna turn up hours late and steal the show from the pros who had to die for the name." - Yamcha (DBWTF: Z-Rap 3)
"Over saturation is easy. Just drag the slider to the right and there you are: instant interest. And certainly, the majority of the public likes saturated color images. In fact, if you want to quickly create a popular image, simply over saturate the colors and increase the contrast. While you may not achieve a sophisticated image, you will achieve an image that will please a less demanding audience." - Alain Briot
