Eldritch-beings in DB

Post by WesMan23 » Sat Aug 31, 2013 4:09 pm

For those of you not familiar, an Eldritch being is an alien being which does not conform to our ideas of appearance, language, so on and so forth, popularized by H.P. Lovecraft, the most famous being Cthulhu. The beings in DB are much more "humanoid" in appearance, and are an acceptable, standard form. The only ones to really stray from this to any degree are Hirudegarn and arguably, 3rd form Freeza. Would you have liked it if the aliens in DB actually looked alien-like more than human-esque in appearance?
"You haven't figured it out yet? I'm the Saiyan who came all the way from Earth for the sole purpose of beating you. I am the warrior you've heard of in legends, pure of heart and awakened by fury. That's what I am. I AM THE SUPER SAIYAN, SON GOKU!" - Goku, Dragon Ball Z Kai, The Angry Super Saiyan! Throw Your Hat in the Ring, Son Goku!

I would to see less Human styled aliens honestly. Maybe as soldiers or such. Boo should have been an Eldritch IMO. Would have made him more unique and could come up with even more crazy moves.

Well, DBZ characters are "martial arts heroes," and I don't know how well that sort of thing plays out against enemies who don't fight back in a similar manner. Really, that just sort of turns Goku into Superman.

I know. :P I just figured it was a topical comparison.

Understood. Just hate when people always compare the same two people. I think Goku has more in common with other legends or heroes than Superman

Personally? I'd rather not see them in Dragon Ball simply because I feel the series' approach to villains wouldn't mesh well with these sorts of beings. Even in comic books, as noted before, bizarre, god-like aliens are rarely defeated essentially punching them really hart, and when it happens it often seems like it's done in poor taste to me. I'd be totally okay with it if it were handled from a different angle, though, like actually outsmarting a being like that or using some sort of artifact, but that in and of itself doesn't scream "Dragon Ball" to me. Maybe if it were done for a fanfic or some thing it wouldn't seem so bad to me.

Of course, if you're narrowing "eldritch beings" down to "aliens that are distinctly inhuman" rather than the god-like monstrosities that show up in Lovecraft's works, I guess I'd enjoy seeing more enemies like that. Of course, it might not mesh well with the series since Dragon Ball is so martial arts oriented -- something without a humanoid shape isn't going to use martial arts, so the fight scenes might be a bit less engaging, depending on how they're approached. I think it probably would have been neat, though.

The game Buu's Fury has an item called "Eldritch Cameo", a stone with engravings in some unfathomable language written untold aeons ago. It gives you a decent stat boost.

There's also that color illustration where Toriyama mis-wrote the title as "Dagon Ball".

Actually, Boo is probably the closest thing DB gets to a Lovecraftian monster. A seemingly all-powerful creature who doesn't conform to our puny human logic, revived after millions of years of slumber when the stars are right. Who will be eaten first?

We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.
