Colleen Clinkenbeard.

I've said it before and I'm not afraid to say it again, I think she fits Goku better than she did Gohan. IMO her Saiyan arc Gohan sounded too spritely and rowdy. I still feel either Maxey Whitehead or Brina Palencia should've been given the role to give Gohan that soft and demure sound he needed. That voice, on the other hand, fit Goku much better. It was character appropriate, distinct, and didn't grate on my nerves.

The others... it's all been said before. Henderson was too generic, Delgadillo sounded too "zen", Naldony was as grating for Goku as she was for Gohan, Slusar was an even more boring Henderson impression, the AB Groupe voice would've been decent if she weren't talking faster than the English dub of Mach Gogogo/Speed Racer. Goodson is probably my second pick; her voice is great but it reminds me too much of her Naoto  .

And as for Peter Kelamis's Kid Goku... :wtf: :lolno: . Seriously who the FUCK made that casting decision!? They already had Henderson doing the voice for Gohan, why couldn't they just have her do Kid Goku in those two little flashbacks?

Kirby also did it if I'm correct. Maybe they was following the JPN Audio

For the detractors, what is it about Clinkenbeard that you dislike? What I find weird is the extent to which you seem to dislike it.

To me she sounds like a girl. Whatever you think about Nadolny being "grating" is fine, but regardless Nadolny does not sound like a girl, whiny little bitch? maybe...whiny littel girl bitch? NO. When I hear Colleen Clinkbeard I HEAR COLEEN CLINKBEARD. It'd be fine if it was at least androgynous, but unfortunately it is totally feminine.

To slightly troll this youtube vid sums it up and at the same time is about the closest to sounding like a boy Colleen ever gets IN MY OPINION http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVukSF1rIpA

To me this http://youtu.be/08DKPptyQ58?t=1m50s just sounds like a girl trying to sound like a boy! It sounds like some sort of bad Disney comedy where a girl is at like a boys summer camp and trying to play it off..."Mulan the Prequel" or something else equally as terrible.

I get you like Kai and especially Clinkbeard but what I don't get is why? Leaving comparison's aside about your distaste for Nadolny, what about Clinkbeard is so good to you?

For me, I like Nadolny, especially as Gohan, because she sounds kind of like Jonathan Taylor Thomas as Simba from the Lion King

I sounded like a girl...until I was 15 :( :( :( . In fact my voice was higher pitched than Collen's Goku and Gohan till I was 14. When I was 15 I sounded more or less around the pitch of Kid Simba. Now I'm around Goku's pitch(English dub). So now I'm going to bed with my feelings hurt. Thanks a lot man :(

 Sorry if I did hurt your feelings and you are not joking. It's my opinion and only worth about that... Voices are hard and in general we don't like the sound of our own voice, at least I know I sometimes cringe when I hear it on a recording. Again, apologies.

I just feel that way about voicing Gohan and Goku not actual real people. After all my beloved Masako sounds as far from a real boy as you can get  and her voice is super high! BUT she still sounds masculine and like a boy. Not a girl.

Having a high pitch voice also doesn't mean it is automatically feminine after all Goku's is high as anything and sounds masculine to me.

Colleen's voice just sounds like a Colleen and not a Collin or a Goku or Gohan

Well, Nadolny makes my ears bleed, and doesn't sound any more boyish than Clinkenbeard. Clinkenbeard has a smooth sounding voice, a lot of energy, and she's a good actress. I think it fits fine, yeah Nozawa's the best, but just because someone's better doesn't make her's bad. Yeah, it's a little feminine, but unless you get a little boy, it's almost always gonna sound like a female. I can accept that, I can't accept akward cadence and an irritating laugh. It's worse than Janice Litman Goralnik (née Hosenstein), without the caveat of being humorous.

Nadolny sounds NOTHING like JTT.

I'm pretty sure it was Jillian Michaels, the actress who took over for Gohan in Episode 166/151 and went on to do Goten, who took over for Kid Goku in flashbacks after Kelamis left. At least that's what I've heard. If anyone can confirm or rebutt this that'd be helpful :) .

I could say the same about you and Nadalony's Goku. And I've explained why I dislike Clinkenbeard's Goku in the past but.... Her Goku is simply annoying, she approaches Goku with "Goku is a wild jungle boy" without putting any other aspects in so she sounds like a kid who downed a jug of red kool-aid. Nadalony's Goku had it's problems in the old dub but it still had a charm to it that Clinkenbeard's Goku simply doesn't have. Listening to Clinkenbeard's Goku is like listening to Tiffany Grant's Asuka, but at least Grant's Asuka worked for the character. I'd rather listen to Nadalony with her occasional off delivery and awkward laugh than Red Kool-Aid Asukaku anyday.

Goku is a wild jungle boy, he isn't Krusty the Clown. Show me where her Goku sounds like a hyperactive kid. What aspects are missing?

There's nothing remotely charming about Nadolny, and the only thing she did occassionally was give a line reading that sounded remotely natural or belieavable. Her Goku voice is the verbal equivalent to sandpaper. It's weird that people think she's good as Goku and terrible as Gohan when I think the exact opposite is true. Okay, she's not great as Gohan either, but it's preferable to her Goku. Unfortunately I can't explain what irks me about her delivery in writing.

A huge difference between the two is that Nadolny was around for over a hundred episodes whereas Clinkenbeard was around for a movie.

Well, besides Nozawa, I actually liked Barbara Goodson a lot, despite it being a completely inaccurate dub. Brianne Siddall only voiced him in Final Bout, and man she would have been my favorite if she'd played more. XD Naldony was alright. I always thought her Goku was stronger than Gohan. Clinkenbeard had some nice acting for her Goku, though it can be a touch too girly. So...I dunno.

Stephanie Nadolny. Yes, the rasp is horrible and her acting was a little subpar to begin with, but what really sold her for me in that role was the her performance in the 10th anniversary movie. By then, her acting had improved a lot by the time it was dubbed, and rasp was toned down. It wasn't the best, but one line made love it. "Grandpa's ball has four stars. Hi stars!"

As for Colleen Clinkenbeard's, all I hear is a younger Luffy. That's not a bad per say, as Goku and Luffy are close enough in characterization, but it can be grating if watch One Piece's dub then jump over to DB Movie 1.

Saffron Henderson, for me, sounded to intelligent for Goku. I can see how that would work for Gohan, but it turned me off so much that I decided to watch Movies 2 and 3 just in Japanese.
And well since this an English Goku tread, I'll just say I love Masako Nozawa, and leave it at that.

Haha so so very true  although agreed she is def no Nozawa, I too did really love that scene!

Actually, if Barbara Goodson was given a proper script and direction she could have rivaled Nozawa in my opinion.

I'm pretty mixed on Colleen's Goku. On one hand, the acting is good, but on the other, the actual voice itself just seems too......whiny, I guess? Which is good for playing Gohan, but no so much Goku.

Stephanie I feel is the opposite. Her acting may have been a mixed bag, but I feel that her voice managed to pull of Goku's naive nature better than any other English voice for Goku. Besides, judging from her more later works as Goku, her acting actually was improving at a decent rate.

Could you point to a scene where Goku sounds "whiny"?

Her acting is pretty much always subpar, there are a few nice moments but they are overwhelmed by the unnatural cadence of her delivery.

Why is the fact that two voices sound the same grating?

Henderson might convey a little more intelligence than Goku has, but not that much more, and a lot of that can be due to direction and script. She has a great voice, she can act, and has Goku's youthful exuberance.

http://youtu.be/08DKPptyQ58?t=1m44s This scene here, Goku just sounds plain obnoxious. Only when he calms down does he sound decent and even then it's nothing special. I can't put my finger on it but the performance has no charm to it. And it sounds far too well spoken, she sounds like a little kid trying to sound like a professor. It worked for Gohan but not Goku.

I might have used the wrong word there. Would "jarring" be better? I meant the voices sound similar and was kinda weird jumping OP to Movie 1.

Yeah, I understand that. The director probably just handed her the script and told her to do it just like Gohan.
