Re: Favorite English voice for Kid Goku?
Kids sound like kids, not like women or men or teen females or males. Kids have a distinctive high pitched voice that sounds unlike an older person. Girls and boys sound pretty similar before puberty. Look up some videos on youtube like "Charlie Bit My Finger" to understand how young kids sound. They may slur their words too and talk with the sound of less experience. I think this is why I like Henderson so much is because she has the right tone, pitch and the way she speaks sounds believable as if a kid is speaking. Clinkenbeard sounds too old, especially for Gohan. She sounds distinctively female and an older female to boot. It's sounds as if it is a young woman or a teen girl imitating a child's voice.

Yeah, Clinkenbeard's Gohan does sound feminine, but it's still fine. I can still tell Henderson is a woman. They still sound fine to me for the purpose of the show. I'm willing to give up sounding exactly like a child for a great performance and both are great as Gohan and Goku. Nadolny is not, that's just how I see it.Attitudefan wrote:Clinkenbeard sounds too old, especially for Gohan. She sounds distinctively female and an older female to boot. Really, it's that bad? Ringworm, there's nothing even remotely charming about Nadolny's Goku. Also, I completely disagree with your assessment about Clinkenbeard's Goku trying to sound like a professor. I'm not even sure how the hell you heard anything professor like, Goku wasn't explaining anything.
That I can see. However, I don't watch One Piece, so I don't have that issue.I might have used the wrong word there. Would "jarring" be better? I meant the voices sound similar and was kinda weird jumping OP to Movie 1.

You say Nadolny does not sound like Simba or another scruffy kid, I think she does, different strokes for different folks.
You say Clinkbeard is good for doing jungle boy innocent not annoying and not being raspy, I think she sounds like a little girl or just annoying, again different strokes for different folks.

Henderson does sound more boyish than Clinkenbeard however. She nails a child's intonation and speech patterns unlike the FUNi actors who took over afterwards.

Re: Favorite English voice for Kid Goku?
I've found that Clinkenbeard's Gohan sounds much more like a male child than Nadolny's. It's just that her Goku is a bit too close to her Gohan.
But then, Goku doesn't really sound that much like a real kid of his age, regardless. Even Nozawa makes him sound like he's only seven or eight at the most, when he starts off as 12.
It's the acting I'm more concerned with, which is why I reject Nadolny. She can't really act. The most she has going for her is giving Goku a bit of a wild fringe which works because he's essentially a wild child.

I could be sarcastic, but I'll simply write that no, and I don't need to. I can safely assume that no child has ever sounded like that or talked with that cadence. She has completely unnatural rhythms.TheGmGoken wrote:Do you know everyone in the worldNo person in the history of the world ever sounded or talked like that.?

When I say "professor" I mean her voice flows far too swiftly it doesn't make you think "naive boy" it could work for GT Kid Goku but not DB Kid Goku. And Nadalony sounded a little strange (I personally think it just makes Goku cute) but you act like like she was Parody William Shatner tier.

I'm still not sure what you mean by "flows far too swiftly". I find nothing cute about Nadolny's Goku, just annoying, and she isn't too far from parody Shatner.ringworm128 wrote:When I say "professor" I mean her voice flows far too swiftly it doesn't make you think "naive boy" it could work for GT Kid Goku but not DB Kid Goku. Re: Favorite English voice for Kid Goku?
To be fair, there's not really any kid that's ever sounded like Nozawa does as young Goku either. Or any of the other dub Goku's, either, really. It's just one of those things about having women play little boys - it works great from a voice-over perspective, but I've yet to hear a performance where you can't clearly tell it's a woman if you pay attention.
That aside, looks like I haven't answered this myself, though I could have sworn I had...anyway, I'm pretty much equal between Nadolny and Nozawa for young Goku. I'm among those that thinks Nadolny really makes the role her own and gives an enjoyable performance, showcasing both Goku's cuteness and his naivety. I seem to recall her being particularly good in movie 4's dub.

Still, Nozawa sounds infinitely more natural as Goku than Nadolny. Ahh, all right. The delivery is debatable at least, I mistook your post for suggesting Nozawa actually sounded any more like a kid than Nadolny did. My mistake. ^_^;

Re: Favorite English voice for Kid Goku?
I really struggle to settle with anyone on this question. No one can quite get that childlike goofiness that Nozawa nailed.
I'd probably go with Henderson but it's a little too much like her Gohan so it's more calm and collected than what is really suitable for Goku.
I can't get on board with Nadolny. Something about her delivery just feels wrong and at times, it's just plain bad.
I think Clinkenbeard is fantastic at being goofy and getting the charm of Goku right but the actual voice is a bit too raspy and suffers from the man-child voices that Trunks has.
And...then there's Zoey Sulsar who is as wooden as they come, has the man-child voice and nails none of Goku's traits.

Mr. Satan is meant to be an over the top wrestler type, and both the dub voice and Gori are great. Nadolny, not so much. Besides, pointing out another character as sounding unnatural isn't an argument in Nadolny's favor.
It's not so much the voice at is the delivery. Her cadence is so awful and unnatural.
