I don't know what you mean there. It's literally a portmanteau of Beer(s) and Virus, at least for that romanization/adaptation, just a clever romanization that incorporates both puns. 'Beer-rus' doesn't sound weird coming off the tongue in English.AlphaLhyan wrote:But thats the thing.....I'm trying to figure out what actually sounds better off the tongue, Beerus, Birus, they look good spelled out
But what about when being said, (Bee-rus) (Bi--rus) they sound weird being said aloud in English

I don't know. Personally, I throw the "it sounds weird" reasoning out the window, considering we're talking about a series with puns on vegetables, fruit, cold, Disney, hawaian kings, underwear and booze.

Not too mention, if you watch Battle of the Gods and you listen to them when they his name its literally sounds like they are saying "Beers-sama" So thats probably what I'm going with in my project over these other names not saying they cant be spelt that way like Berus but the "U" is silenced like it is in some Japanese language. But for it being translated to English in a dubbing, i say it will be pronounced Beers even by Funimation
Re: Bills or Beers? Which one sounds better?
You're under the impression, it seems, that I'm defending the name for its legitimacy. I'm not. I'm saying it looks and sounds better than "BBERUS" or any equivalent with "US" in it.Metalwario64 wrote:Like Gozita.B wrote: Except the point was DB Wiki didn't pull it out of their ass; they(apparently) got it from Japan who pulled it out of Japan's ass.

You say that, but I see a lot of people on the forum who write "Bebi" instead of "Baby", for example. (That one's a personal pet peeve, since it's one step away from using "Seru" or "Torankusu" or "Buruma".) You might also see people going out of their way to write "Gyaric Ho/Gyarikku Ho" instead of just "Garlic Cannon".TheGmGoken wrote:Yet none of those name puns sound weird.Rukura wrote:I don't know. It comes back to personal opinion/being way more familiar with all the well established puns than actually being weird in the context of the series.

I remember I used "Bebi" for a while just because Baby Vegeta sounds like...well, baby Vegeta.

I'll give you the Bebi one, because I'm guilty of it. I just don't like the way it looks.Rukura wrote: You might also see people going out of their way to write "Gyaric Ho/Gyarikku Ho" instead of just "Garlic Cannon".
But to be fair in this instance, the garlic ones aren't actually the same; ガーリック versus ギャリック.

And then you remembered that they actually call him "Vegeta-Baby" instead of "Baby Vegeta"?Rocketman wrote:I remember I used "Bebi" for a while just because Baby Vegeta sounds like...well, baby Vegeta.

True enough, it's not exactly the same. But even if you go for an adaptation like "Gyarlic", you're really just saying the intended garlic pun with a slight taste of "was there a "y" in there?". (EDIT: Although, in hindsight, I guess maybe "Gyarlic" works better than both "garlic" or "gyaric" since it preservs both the pun and the way it's written differently in katakana lol)TheDevilsCorpse wrote:I'll give you the Bebi one, because I'm guilty of it. Point is, Beerus is most definitely not alone in the "name puns that will sound weird to some, but doesn't matter because of the fruit salad with booze dressing that is Dragon Ball" category.

I don't know what's worse, me actually forgetting about that song (thanks, by the way), or the fact that now I really want Santa-Baby to be a thing. I found that way funnier than I should.TheDevilsCorpse wrote:No, not actual babies. Ha. Actually, I'm pretty sure the DB wikia was using "Bills" long before that Japanese product (I think it was a DS cover or some such thing) using the "Bills" spelling surfaced.B wrote:Except the point was DB Wiki didn't pull it out of their ass; they(apparently) got it from Japan who pulled it out of Japan's ass.
Truth be told, they almost certainly got that spelling from us on Kanzenshuu. When we first reported on the new characters for the movie, we used the spellings "Bils" and "Whis", on the theory that their names were puns on "pilsner" and "whiskey" (hey, we were about 70% right). Then Julian asked Watanabe on Twitter if "pilsner" was the name pun and he said no, so we reverted to "Birusu" until finding out the real source. Anyway, in the meantime the DB wikia started using the spellings "Bills" and "Wiss". I've got no proof, but I always assumed that they just took the spellings we used initially but tried to personalize them a bit by doubling the "l" and "s" (and removing the "h" in "Whis"), then just stuck with those spellings to the bitter end. I mean, what reason is there for the second "s" in "Wiss"?
While I'm not a big fan of "Beerus" either (yeah, originally his name was a pun on "virus", but he was also originally a lizard), I don't really see what's so awkward about it. We do after all use a few names in English that end in "us", mostly thanks to Latin: "Julius" and "Jesus" spring to mind easily enough. Come to think of it, the main problem with "Beerus" might be that it sounds like some bizarre parody of Jesus.B wrote:You're under the impression, it seems, that I'm defending the name for its legitimacy. From memory, I think when the new characters were originally revealed in a scan from one of the Jump magazines on, I think, a French Twitter account, Google Translate was making the spelling of his name appear as 'Bills'. I'll try dig up the original post.Herms wrote:Actually, I'm pretty sure the DB wikia was using "Bills" long before that Japanese product (I think it was a DS cover or some such thing) using the "Bills" spelling surfaced.B wrote:Except the point was DB Wiki didn't pull it out of their ass; they(apparently) got it from Japan who pulled it out of Japan's ass.

Wiss, I'm pretty certain DB Wikia came up with that by themselves. Thankfully, even they've abandoned it.
EDIT: OK, here we go:

"Bills" was also used on the 3DS covers: http://www.amazon.co.jp/NINTENDO-3DSLL% ... 8%E7%A5%9EDragonBoxZTheMovies wrote:From memory, I think when the new characters were originally revealed in a scan from one of the Jump magazines on, I think, a French Twitter account, Google Translate was making the spelling of his name appear as 'Bills'. I don't really mind the other ones, but i'm used to calling him just Bills, as that was the first one i heard.
It would be nice if they would call him simply Virus, but for those who wouldn't know about the original name wouldn't get it.

For what sounds better I go with "Bilus" since it just sounds more powerful and god like.
