Is there anything you like better in the dub?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

The fact that the English tracks are mixed in stereo is quite nice. ^_^

But I guess that wasn't the question. I really like the Ocean cast, like a lot of people here. I actually remember being somewhat fond of Sean Schemmel, but I didn't get too attached to him. Krillins VA throughout both dubs felt just as good as his Japanese counterpart, even if I do love Mayumi Tanaka as Kuririn and Luffy.

For me, the dub had its high points, but by far I enjoy the Japanese audio and music.

Dameon Clarke's Perfect Cell. He was dead-on perfect, and for once, the lines they wrote for him were good too. Good VA + good dialogue = best role in the dub. ESPECIALLY at the end of the Cell Games.

*after killing Mirai* "I see my aim is as good as ever. It's so GOOD to be back."

*is finishing the tale of how he came back* "You could say I'm...new and improved. Hmhmhm."

Vegeta: At last...it's over.... "Wrong. It's over when I say it's over. And it's over NOW!"

*Piccolo and the humans blast him* "Why don't you JUST STAY DOWN?!"

*pushing Gohan's Kamehameha back* "NO CHANCE! YOU HAVE NO CHANCE!"

*receives a surprise blast...* "Wh--VEGETA?!"

*is being blasted apart* "I-I'm perrrrffffffffeccccctt....hhhhhh...."

=====

Speaking of Cell, has much as I had to admit it, Faulconer came up with some good music for him, especially his Perfect theme. And "Ginyu Transformation" NEVER worked as well as when it was played while Cell was being killed. No wonder you find it on the Net as "End Of Cell.mp3" so often.

Oh yes. 8) That scene makes my body hairs stand up on end. Don't ask me why though. :?

Maybe because it's just plain awesome. :D D'you like the music when Vegeta's Big Bang Attack just hits Cell, and zooms in to him? That's so dramatic.

I didn't take part in this discussion, 'cause I never saw the Japanese version (so I couldn't say I liked something "better"). Anyway, just thought I'd say. :P

I believe the line was actually: "I-I-I D-D-D-D-ON'T UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". :)

I do concur though, I feel those last few moments of the Cell Games Saga Arc carried a level of ardent emotional tension and intensity that the Japanese version, despite the superior VAs... just didn't capture for me. The visual montage when SS2 Gohan is obliterating every bit of Cell with that final Kamehameha redefines pure awesomeness, IMO. (in both the Anime and the Manga).

As for what the Dub does better than the Japanese version, for me, is setting a great level of serious emotion and epicness that, even though the Japanese version *is* extremely epic.... didn't nail down or at least execute for me cause it took itself as if it was just some silly Anime a lot of the time, a lot of the songs felt out of context (though the moments of silence are awesome and very frequent in my opinion), but FUNimation ALWAYS had a deluge of music going... no moments of silence don't really faciltate the Anime from an audio standpoint. And FUNimation has a lot of themes that are used out of context as well.... so, I guess I could say despite its cons, where FUNimation's dub fails, the Japanese version succeeds, and where the Japanese version ceases to do the job, FUNimation, in their pros, do quite a swell job, IMHO, again.

... speaking of Faulconer's background music for DBZ, I absolutely loved that one piece after Cell was killed and the warriors said goodbye to each other as they flew off to do their own thing. Does anyone know the name of that song?

In my dub he screams out "NOOO COMPREEENDO...ESSTOY PERFECTO TODOPODEROSO" or somthing like that. It also is awesome that Goku's voice is done, with the pitch not too high or too low.

Even though i prefer the japanese version when it comes to anything DragonBall there are some things i do like about the Funimation dub. I like Cells english voice actor Dameon Clarke because he captures Cells arrogance and obsession with perfection. I also like the dub theme for Cell when he first becomes perfect as well as the theme for when he is being destroyed by Gohans Kamehameha. Daburas Funimation voice is another one i like because it's deep and demonic .
It is impossible to improve upon perfection.

I believe it's on the "Trunks Compendium 1" CD, known as Track 11 - "Time Chamber", to be specific.

I agree. In my opinion, the voices are a lot more distinguishable and unique when they're done by the FUNimation/ Ocean voice actors, but the Japanese voice actors sound the same: squeaky and high-pitched. Well, most anyway. Sorry if I've made anyone mad. :)

Some people don't seem to hear it, but Ms. Nozawa does make her voices for the Son boys (including Burdock and Tullece) sound slightly different from eachother.

Unfortunately, most people seem to just be turned off by the fact that Goku's voiced by a woman mainly from hearing him dubbed by a male in just about every other language.

I just don't like the way she tends to stretch out sounds (especially as Goku; "ohh" becomes "oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh").

On a related note, why does everyone, especially Goku, when they're really mad, go "kkk...kkk-kkkkk....!!" in Japanese?

Oh; in that case, the English dub has suddenly become a lot more accurate. :P

Really? I always thought the line was "I'll be baaack!!"

But yea, the cell games are definatly my favourite part of the dub.

I like perfect cell's articulite voice.

And it is so cool, when Cell starts calling Gohan a monster.
