Opinions on various dubs.
Opinions on various dubs.
So, as most people know, most of this forum has only ever watched or cared enough for the Funi and the Japanese versions, however, most of this forum know that DBZ has a lot of dubs across the Planet, which, for better or worse helped the franchise to create the popularity it has today. So, this thread will basically be, one person posts a clip or some clips of a random dub, and we will discuss it.
I'll start with the European Portuguese one since that's the one I grew up with.
Here's a dialogue heavy scene- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcGTBeeW6J0
And here's Goku's 20x Kaioken vs Freeza- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdOlTsRHVdI
Overall I really like this dub, nostalgia does play a part of it (not that much tho, since I got my first share of DBZ with Budokai 1), but overall I find this a great dub.

Re: Opinions on various dubs.
In my opinion, the Portuguese Dub is the second worst European DragonBall Dub (the first one is the Serbian Dub).
However, I do like the voice of Goku & Vegeta (his Buu Saga voice ONLY) and the idea of making Piccolo sound demonic.

Re: Opinions on various dubs.
For me the best dub is Funimation's Kai dub. I cant watch the old Z dub anymore. Believe me I tried but I cant even get through two episodes without putting something else on. It has its moments that I prefer over Kai such as the death of Cell but overall, for me Kai blows the old dub out of the water completely for me.

Re: Opinions on various dubs.
It depends on what I am in the mood for and which series...
Dragon Ball -
Japanese Dub only until the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai and some part of the Piccolo Daimo arc and only then for some episodes / scenes. The thing is I love the Japanese cast and the American cast for different reasons so for some scenes I prefer some of the American Voice acting (read as Sabat, Schemmel, Volmer (yes I do like her whiny freak out Bulma), and Strait, and whoever does Kamesenin for funi) over the originals and visa versa. But I don't like the US Yajirobi or Oolong.
Dragon Ball Z -
For most of the Saiyan Arc I prefer the Japanese Dub, but at about the Namek arc I flip between the Funi and Original Dub because I prefer some of the acting and music as well as certain line re-writes for Vegeta. (ex: "Strength is the only thing that matters in this world. Everything else is just a delusion for the weak. There is only one certainty in life...a strong man stands above and conquers all!!!!!!!"
)
I also don't like the Dragon Ball music carried over for Dragon Ball Z with the American voice cast or the exclusive Z era Japanese music with that US cast (and yes I tried it for just about every episode and hated it, I skipped Buma v. Crabs, Fake Namek, and some other filler episodes when I tried it out for the billionth time rewatching).
However, I find the Japanese Z score absurdly perfect when I watch it in Japanese!
I see the funi Z dub and the japanese dub as just two different shows and depending on what I am in the mood for I will watch accordingly (always with subtitles on lol I still like knowing the real dialogue).
Dragon Ball Z Kai-
Again, cannot stand the Shunsuke Kikuchi music with the American cast, it just sounds hoaky and jarring to me. Every time i start getting into a scene there is a vibraslap or something else to muck it up that I just don't enjoy unless I am watching in Japanese. There's something about the Japanese language i just find fitting with the old music, like they work in tandem, whereas when I hear it with US voices I find it absurdly terrible.
Plus, despite what the actors think of their "improved"performances in Kai, I find it less intense and am unable to connect with it as well. The dialogue is leaps and bounds more accurate but does not come across as natural to me as their Americanized scripts. Plus Gohan sounds like a little girl and even worse during the Cell arc.
Dragon Ball GT
That's a tough one cuz when I do watch it I just skip around. I love Nozawa and Schemmel and love hearing Nozawa go between ages of Goku...overall I prefer the American Voices here but with the Japanese music. The US music for this is pretty darn awful.
In sum:
Dragon Ball - Japanese mostly
Dragon Ball Z -Japanese/Funi US broadcast (US voices and US music but always with subtitles on cuz I like knowing what the real dialogue is supposed to be)
Dragon Ball Z Kai- pass, the music clashes with the acting and the acting feels phoned in or too over the top but never as intense as I am hoping for it;s missing "that" (I know most people disagree with me but it's my opinion)
Dragon Ball GT - US voices (subtitles on) with Japanese music

Are there two Serbian dubs? Because one of them that I heard is most definitely....not....the best........whereas the other one didn't sound too bad.TheRed259 wrote:In my opinion, the Portuguese Dub is the second worst European DragonBall Dub (the first one is the Serbian Dub).
The Hebrew dub wins for the most...interesting...Super Saiyan transformation scream.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

@TheBlackPaladin Yes, there are two Serbian Dubs and I am talking about the first one.
Also, Hebrew Goku's voice is very annoying and tries to imitate Mazako or something...

Re: Opinions on various dubs.
My problem with the normal Funi isn't actually with the voice actors, but the dialouge. Some of these are just... Ugh...
Example:
(Right after Goku blocks Trunks' sword with his finger, the gang is amazed)
I think Gohan: I'm glad that guy put his sword away!
Krillin: And I'm glad Goku put his finger away!
(Just as Vegeta is about to rip android 19's hands off, he screams this)
Vegeta: NEVER SAY DIE!!!!
Hearing that line was the time I went back to the first season to rewatch the whole series in Japanese. Heck, even Funimation though that it was a stupid line and changed it in Kai:
Vegeta...DON'T LET GO!!!

Re: Opinions on various dubs.
I actually liked Funi's old "Never say die!!!" line. It made Vegeta seem like an overexcited maniac. Also I'm not usually one to complement anything from the Westwood dub but Drummond's "Never give up!!!" version was pretty damn good too.
Anyway these are my dub preferences. I'll pretty much take Funi for everything except for Saiyan and Namek sagas which I like a bit more in Ocean due to my love of the Levy score and the cast at their best.
Westwood Z I mostly dislike apart from the Fusion and Kid Buu sagas which I find watchable.
Blue Water GT is mostly awful outside of the intro and Pan being less annoying. Plus I like Sulsar's Kid Goku.
Blue Water DB was an improvement over their GT dub and was actually watchable.
Big Green dub still amazes me to this day that AB Groupe could be so cheap.

Re: Opinions on various dubs.
Funi DB: The dub isn't too bad from what I remember. Not that great, but not that good.
Ocean Z: Not a fan of anything past the Saiyan arc, but I hear the first 3 movies were well done. I also hate the pacing.
Funi Z: For nostalgic reasons I like them more than Ocean even though in the series they both are terrible abominations that should be labelled as a parody instead of ruining the name of DBZ and being the sole causes of it's ridicule. I also hate the pacing.
Funi Kai: Greatly redeems Funi Z and makes it an actual respectable show instead of being what should just be a parody. Much better pace.
Big Green: Laughably awful
Malaysian: Hilariously awful
Japanese DB: Awesome
Japanese Z: Awesome but I hate the pacing.
Japanese Kai: Much better pace, but the acting isn't as good as before.

Re: Opinions on various dubs.
The original Japanese for Dragon Ball, DBZ and GT + movies: Pretty great. It had the best script and the best acting. But, having certain actors play the character no matter what age (or family) is kind of distracting.
Japanese Kai: Most of the actors feel worn out by age.
Blue Water OG Dragon Ball: From what I've seen, it had some fitting voices and the script seems good. The acting is pretty spotty though.
Ocean Z: Movies were great. The series...it feels like a different show all together at times and I'm not a big fan of it.
FUNi OG Dragon Ball: Spotty, but not too bad.
FUNi Z: Like with Ocean Z, it feels like a different show all together. I didn't like that they always HAVE to have music all the time and I didn't like a lot of them. The voice acting can get pretty bad.
FUNi Kai: Much better acting and a much more faithful script. It's inconsistent though in terms of attack names and stuff. I'm not a fan of certain voices...like Schemmel as King Kai (Kaio).
Big Green: Good for a laugh.
Mexican Z: From the few clips I've seen, Mario Castañeda seems like a very good Goku. He has almost as much personality in his performance as Nozawa from what I can tell. And whoever played Kid Gohan, that scream at the SSJ2 transformation was legendary. But, yeah, this dub seems like it's VERY good. I wouldn't mind seeing more.

Re: Opinions on various dubs.
Laura Torres is her name, and she also played Kid Goku and Kid Goten. She's awesome. Castaneda seems to be very good too. And Eduardo Garza, the second and longest-serving of Krillin's voice actors. And Gerardo Reyero, who played Freeza (his voice is deeper than Ryusei Nakao's, but he's totally got Nakao's "snotty, upper-class, arrogant" vibe).ConfusedPhantom wrote:And whoever played Kid Gohan, that scream at the SSJ2 transformation was legendary.
The Mexican Spanish dub is generally considered to be the best international adaptation that the animes ever received.

Re: Opinions on various dubs.
To be honest, I didn't see Dragon Ball yet. But, I am planning on doing so soon.
This is a list on the various dubs that I had seen.
Z (Ocean Group): My favourite arc would be the Saiyan arc. Enjoyed the voice acting and the censorship wasn't so bad.My favourite voice actors would have to be Brian Drummond and Scott McNeil. The censorship in the later arcs weren't as polished.
Z (Funi): When they first took over from Ocean Group, they tried too hard to imitate the previous voice actors, which made their acting not so good. Some of the dialogue can be quite cheesy. They did improve a lot later. I definitely preferred the remastered version.
Z (original: Very good. When I heard Goku's Japanese voice for the first time, it did surprise me. But, I really enjoyed it a lot.
GT(Funi): It was decent, but they did make Pan a lot cheekier than in the original. Also noticed that Pan, Trunks and Goku argued more.
GT (original): Noticed that I liked Pan lot more. Also liked the OPs and EDs.
Kai (Funi): A huge improvement. I like the acting of Gohan and Freeza the most. Also like the fact that the actors aren't trying to imitate anyone else when voicing their characters.
As for music, I don't really mind for either dub.

Re: Opinions on various dubs.
Best dub ever(My opinion and nostalgia. Though I know it's not the best. It's just my favorite) is the Korean dub. I love the voices of every character except for Freeza. The screams are great. And that FUTURE TRUNKS scream! Good Kami old mighty. I love the openings to the Korean Dub. And Kid Goku voice sounds wild like a dog.
