The levels didn't do well, the only DB release that has done well was the original /boxed season sets on VHS/DVD and the Orange Bricks. The Levels and Dboxes didn't do well at all.

There is zero evidence to back up the Dragon Boxes not doing well. If anything, the fact that they basically sold out of their stock if current supplies are any indication shows they sold exactly what FUNimation projected they would sell.

So they went from "great market research and projections" to "completely off-base market research and projections" between the two products! :D

The Dragon Boxes did so unbelievably well nobody can afford them anymore. That is a clear sign they're in demand, and since supply was purposefully low... well you can do the economic math.
A YouTube channel with no AMVs on it? I know, it's hard to believe.

Well, if these do sell well, then it promotes the idea that destroying DBZ's picture quality makes for a sound release.

Did you just compare some obscure title in North America to an anime which, in the same location, is quite possibly the most popular?

The DBOX's are in demand because FUNimation did an absolutely atrocious job making the fact that they were limited print clear to the consumer and many consumers didn't know they were limited print to begin with so they missed out.
If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out. ;).

But there is still far more demand than supply either way, which means the Dboxes did do much better than Funimation expected.

Which is all the more reason FUNimation should go back and reprint them if you're making good money off of something why stop at all?

Are you familiar with Funimation at all?

I have to agree with this statement. How many times did FUNimation do season sets of Case Closed again? Literally just repackaged, to the point where the menus were recycled? Like, three times? And that's not even a cash cow!
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I'd rather have orange brick rereleases every so often than new remasters that get progressively worse.

Do any of us know the terms of the Dragon Box license FUNimation had with Toei? The limited run could have been a condition of the release and even if they're aware of the demand, they may not be able to simply do another print run. I don't think FUNimation are evil bastards who are keeping the Dragon Boxes out of the hands of their consumers for shits and giggles.

If FUNimation would have actually done a good job making the it clear to the consumer that the DBOX's were limited print I would agree with you completely, but it's hard to defend the "limited print" claim when absolutely none of FUNi's DBOX trailers, online listings, nor the sets themselves ever mention the fact that the U.S. DBOX's were a limited print run to begin with, hell not even FUNimations own dragonballz.com says anything about the U.S. DBOX's being a limited print product, so FUNimation has nobody to blame but themselves for the current demands for a reprint.

Yeah, I was waiting for them to go down in price. Then they started going out of print.

As a casual observer of sales it seems to me that the Dragon Box sets 1-3 sold extremely well or less were made than the rest. I say that because those are the ones most difficult to find or at least purchase at a reasonable price, while Walmart still has for sale online for cheap sets 5, 6, and 7...not saying that it does not indicate 1-3 and in turn 4 as selling well (just like you said) but I think that fact they sold out or met projections if we are going on scarcity may not still necessarily mean it sold well if only a limited number were produced. What I mean is if I make 100 and sell 100 that sold well, for sure, but there was not that many to push. But if I make 1,000 and sell 900 that also sold well and I had more to push. So selling well and scarcity may not be as related as it appears, although again that is my casual observation (shift shift disclaimer disclaimer :shifty: ). I dunno the whole thing seems circular.

Earlier volumes of anything always sell more than later volumes of anything. It's been that way in pretty much every industry that serves up serialized products. Back in the single-disc DVD days, there were always more of the first volume produced and sold than, say, the eighth volume.

So that's not really anything to spin on the Dragon Boxes in any way, positively or negatively. It just "is".

I see your point, but I also think that give what Dragon Box 1 and 2 contain, is the only reason why they are so scarce, rather than people wanting "the Dragon Box experience." ie the Funimation singles cover 4:3 footage with Japanese Audio and Faulconer music after Ginyu Assault whereas the singles for those disks prior to "Assault" are only the edited Ocean group (I know you know this because your website told me lol I am just explaining so other users who wish to comment have context).

So in order to get 4:3 footage with Japanese Audio and English Audio one must have Dragon Box 1 and 2 that covers the Saiyan and Namek Arcs at least up through the Ginyu fight which is ONLY a possibility from the Dragon Boxes.
Without those either Dragon Box 1 or Dragon Box 2 in order to get the proper dub (read as Japanese audio) and proper 4:3 footage fans MUST settle for only 34 episodes in the level sets and then skip to season 2 of the cropped orange bricks... and that right there leaves out 5 episodes.

In essence, the only way to get the proper Japanese Dub with the Proper 4:3 aspect ratio was the Dragon Box 1 and 2 otherwise you get a crop or are limited episode count in 4:3 with an edited American dub.

Given this limited ability to watch the series it makes sense to me that is why the sold out and are so scarce rather than wanting the "Dragon Box experience" because then the same problem would or should be met with all the boxes.

Basically I am noting that the reason Dragon Box 1 and 2 sold better is becuase of what they are and the latter ones are still obtainable because either (1) the later boxes are more numerous or (2) people did not wanting to re-buy the singles because they have the latter arc already with Japanese Audio and 4:3 footage...

And that right there is again my point...it was not the "dragon box experience" that forced the demand it was the limited ability to view the show properly. The singles exist with Japanese audio so the dragon boxes are not needed for those arcs, but they ARE needed for the Saiyan and Namek arcs.

You get what I'm saying cuz in my head it makes sense lol? I know it was long winded, but I care more that my point is understood and less that it is agreed with.

In essence, the only way to get the proper Japanese Dub...
I hate to nitpick but the original Japanese version is not a dub, a foreign edition is.

Lessons in Dragonomics (DBZ economics)

As Kakarot88 and Roland_ELoG point out, demand is greater than the supply for high quality 4:3 episodes of the early sagas of DBZ. Prices are higher as a result, more at 11:00!

This actually makes me wonder what would happen to current prices for the 2nd DragonBox as the level sets had a few more releases.

Anime isn't like western animation. Nearly all of it has dubbed-over voice acting.

It's cheaper that way, and with their budgets, anime needs to save as much money as it can. :P
