Things you Dislike about the Japanese version.
Re: Things you Dislike about the Japanese version.
I'm really happy to see that this thread is existing without any fighting or flaming.
10 years ago, this thread would never have been allowed to exist, it would've caused a gigantic shit storm. The online DBZ community has definitely matured and come a long way over the years.
As for the topic at hand, Goku's voice. Sorry but I just don't think it works for an adult Goku. (She was fine for kid Goku though)

I'm starting to think the Oozaru effect on screams was under used on Goku. Every other saiyan had a decent amount. Not Goku though.....

Never heard an Oozaru sound. Even just referenced Vegeta turning SS in Japanese, and I don't hear it here either.TheGmGoken wrote:Ever heard a Saiyan scream?Metalwario64 wrote:What Oozaru effect?TheGmGoken wrote:I'm starting to think the Oozaru effect on screams was under used on Goku. As I said. They didn't ALWAYS have them. I said the other cast had a DECENT amount. You never had a Saiyan scream with an Oozaru sound effect behind it?Metalwario64 wrote: Never heard an Oozaru sound. Even just referenced Vegeta turning SS in Japanese, and I don't hear it here either.
Gohan had the most, follow but Vegeta, Then Trunks(Future), then Goku, then the Kids.

I've only ever heard what sounds like very heavy reverb. I noticed it prominently when Vegeta fought 18. Can't be what you're talking about because I heard the effect on Piccolo on a filler Saiyan arc training episode when he was meditating.

I hear it a lot. Most of the time when a Saiyan Screams I hear it.Metalwario64 wrote:I've only ever heard what sounds like very heavy reverb. I noticed it prominently when Vegeta fought 18. I've always thought the way they just put an echo filter for the Great Apes was kind of lazy/cheap.

Oh yeah, they had Nozawa screaming as Golden Oozaru Goku in GT, something they didn't have for Oozaru in DB/Z. It didn't sound very good...
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Well personally I don't think Tullece having Goku's voice is that necessary either, but I suppose it comes to the fact Bardok seems to be a "grrrrrr tough as nails" type so a more harder deeper voice would probably make sense to more people. Where as Tullece seems more like a black hat villain so a more high pitch voice isn't that unfitting. Bardok with a high pitch voice could possibly come across as comical, sort of like the evil dog from Up.Gaffer Tape wrote:So people like her Tullece but not her Bardock? I admit that one surprises me quite a bit. After all, they're both basically evil clones of Goku. So why does the former work and not the latter?

There's no telling what television mojo-jojo was performed, but way back during the Battle of Gods promotional train, there was a Hoko x Tate TV special, where you see DB's sound effect specialist Hidenori Arai literally scream into a garbage can, and that's the noise they used for the Oozaru/Great Apes.ringworm128 wrote:I've always thought the way they just put an echo filter for the Great Apes was kind of lazy/cheap.

Lest we think that Funimation's the only company that can write poorly, anyone remember that bizarre scene during Gohan's training with Piccolo where he suddenly tries to play Shiratori with him? What the heck was up with that?

He's a huge nerd. Shiritori is a school game, and Gohan wants nothing more than to be a huge nerd in school.Looneygamemaster wrote:Lest we think that Funimation's the only company that can write poorly, anyone remember that bizarre scene during Gohan's training with Piccolo where he suddenly tries to play Shiratori with him? A YouTube channel with no AMVs on it? I know, it's hard to believe.

Yeah but it just seems so random. Maybe it's a cultural thing but honestly I think there's a reason Funi never used that dialogue even in Kai.

A lot of the issues I'm thinking of are more general problems with the anime itself.
I guess I really don't care for the majority of the insert songs.

Oh god. I completely FORGOT about that. That's definitely something I'm not a fan of. It may be something I could have gotten used to if that was how an oozaru had sounded from the get go, because between Goku and Gohan, there would have been a handful of times to get used to that sound for it. But it just happening this one time...it's jarring as hell and...yeah...it...just sounds terrible.KentalSSJ6 wrote:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Abmj_ZxAk4DBZGTKOSDH wrote:Oh yeah, they had Nozawa screaming as Golden Oozaru Goku in GT, something they didn't have for Oozaru in DB/Z. Re: Things you Dislike about the Japanese version.
I guess I dislike the actress that voices Erasa (Ereeza) for her performance as Uub in the 28th Tenkaichi Budoukai. Sorry but I'm too lazy right now to check the seiyuu's name. Anyway, I don't think she suceeds in making the two characters sound different. Whenever I watch the last 2 episodes of DBZ, I wonder if Gokuu is fighting Gohan's former classmate or what. I don't mind a woman voicing a character that is a child, but I think she could've handled that performance better (just look at Nozawa and Tanaka as an example of perfectly playing children back in 1986). It's hard to explain properly why I dislike the initial Uub voice. I just do. There's a redeeming quality in all this however, and that is Uub not being that important a character.
The point is that I struggled really hard to think of something that I don't like about the Japanese version and I'm glad I at least found something (as minor as it is).

Re: Things you Dislike about the Japanese version.
The only thing I don't really like about the Japanese version is Chibi Trunks' voice in the Buu arc. I understand wanting to be consistent by having the same voice actor, but Kusao's voice as chibi Trunks' just sounds strange to me. I would've preferred a female voice actress for that role.
I can also agree about the spoilerific episode title names. It's only excusable in the sense that the people watching the anime at the time it aired in Japan probably knew what was going to happen anyway because of reading the manga beforehand.
