How accurate is this statement?
from Wikipedia (yeah i know)
"Son Goku from Dragon Ball Z can be considered a homage to Superman. Though key aspects of their stories are different, Goku and Superman are still some of the sole survivors of their homeworlds. Akira Toriyama even admitted that Goku was based off of Superman at that point, since he got the idea for Saiyans from Superman II."

I've herd no interview from Toriyama even mentioning Superman.
Plus, if Toriyama saw Superman II he'd have Vegeta defeated by throwing platic wrap on him
Superman is so popular, and so old, that he can be seen as the basis of many fictional stories.

When you compare the two, there is one similarity. Both Goku and Superman must deal with three members of their own race who are trying to take over the world. That's the closest similiarity that I can think of, aside from both being aliens and with abilities not of this planet.

Both were sent away as babies from their home planet right before it was destroyed in a pod and both ended up on Earth and both were then found, adopted, and raised by someone as their own.Ricochet0082 wrote:When you compare the two, there is one similarity. Brainiac destroying Krypton is not the original reason for the planet's destruction. There are many different reasons for the end of Krypton such as the sun orbiting Krypton going nova or the planet's core exploding. Is the Brainiac version from the cartoon?
But going back to DBZ, yeah, Goku did fight the person responsible for his home world's destruction - Freeza.

You're right, the origin of Superman that includes Brainiac as the HAL of Krypton (subsequently allowing it's destruction, not actually causing it) only exists in the Superman animated series, which was made after DragonBall Z ended.Ricochet0082 wrote:Brainiac destroying Krypton is not the original reason for the planet's destruction. Perfect idea for a Dragonball fanmanga spoof!desirecampbell wrote:Plus, if Toriyama saw Superman II he'd have Vegeta defeated by throwing platic wrap on him

Anyways... I'm sure the idea was at least in part inspired by Superman. Akira Toryiama had a Superman look alike character called "Supa Man" in his Dr. Slump manga by the way.

Anyway, Superman originally came out in the 30s. Many many shows, comics, and books have had some kind of influence from him. Even the basic idea of what a super hero is supposed to look like is derived from Superman.
Heck, on the top of my bookshelf, I have action figured of Goku, Superman, and Optimus Prime posed together, because as far as fictional characters go, IMHO they are the greatest heroes.
