Dragonball Evolution would have been the greatest piece of cinematic artistry if they had included a scene of a dog wearing a suit sitting at the president's desk in the oval office.

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

To be fair Humans have a tail bone and some humans DO have tailsKaboom wrote:Anthropomorphic animals: Normally have tails.

Son Goku: WTF is going on here~
Spoiler:
So it could have been easily possible that Goku is either a human with a tail similar to a Monkey's(Seeing as Goku's hairy) or Goku is a crossbreed.
Re: Why Hasent This Been Brought Up Before?
A normal teenage girl of our world would be freaked out by someone having a tail like that person on the image and they do exist. On Dragon Ball someone like Goku is equally or even more unusual.

Well I know in real life people would be freaked out. I mean but it's Dragonball. Let's be fair. They have a dog as president/king and animals that are regular people. But here comes Goku with a tail and then all in sudden Goku is weird? Kinda dumb don't ya think? I mean I would't be shocked if there was crossbreed in the DB world.rereboy wrote:A normal teenage girl of our world would be freaked out by someone having a tail like that person on the image and they do exist. Re: Why Hasent This Been Brought Up Before?
You only think its dumb because from your perspective having talking animals and the like in the world is not normal. But for Bulma that's pretty normal. What is NOT normal for her is a kid with a fully functioning monkey tail.TheGmGoken wrote:Well I know in real life people would be freaked out. I mean but it's Dragonball. Let's be fair. Well she was born into a world where Animal humanoids were perceived as normal. But yeah I guess it is a bit weird. No one seems to ever give Tien any attention just cause he has a third eye, but everyone goes crazy when they see that Goku has a tail hahaha.

I don't know. Why do all the Marvel citizens go "Oh my goodness! It's Spider Man! We LOVE Spider Man!" when they see him swinging his way through a city, but then go "Oh my goodness! It's Cyclops! He's nothing but a pig sucking MUTANT, and they deserve to DIE!!!" when they see Cyclops blasting criminals with his laser eyes?

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.
Re: Why Hasent This Been Brought Up Before?
What? There are plenty of people who don't like/hate/distrust Spider-man in the marvel universe. Especially earlier on. Both he and the mutants became more popular in-universe over time.
Anyway, I did actually think this was really weird, planned on bringing it up when I covered it in the series. It's so bizarre that someone like Goku can be seen as bizarre when animal-humans, talking animals, talking dinosaurs, three-eyed people and the noseless are just fine.

Off the top of my head, I can think of J. Jonah Jameson and Harry Osbourne...anyone else? What? There are plenty of people who don't like/hate/distrust Spider-man in the marvel universe. Especially earlier on. Both he and the mutants became more popular in-universe over time.
EDIT: Perhaps the police...but the point is, to the average citizen, he's a hero.

Maybe now, but for most of his history (40+ years), the public hated Spider-Man.Fionordequester wrote:Off the top of my head, I can think of J. Jonah Jameson and Harry Osbourne...anyone else? What? Yeah; she has no problem with Oolong or Puar but has a problem with Goku's tail. The hell?

His point is a valid one. The theme of the mutants is that pretty much everybody hates them because they are mutants (full-blown racism even). However, they are part of the same universe of tons of other super powered beings who don't get nearly as much hate because they aren't mutants.Saiga wrote:What? Because talking animals are normal in that world. Little kids with fully functioning monkey tails are not.Kid Buu wrote:Yeah; she has no problem with Oolong or Puar but has a problem with Goku's tail. The hell?
We just find weird because both situations are not normal in OUR world.
Re: Why Hasent This Been Brought Up Before?
Even if it was, Spider-man is probably the worst example to compare to that. Wouldn't the Avengers (minus Hulk) or Fantastic Four (minus Ben) be better for that? And even then, those are all humans who were turned into superheroes, and more relateable to the general public than mutants who are born fundamentally different and are incorrectly perceived as a different genus. I think that does make more sense than the example of Goku.rereboy wrote:His point is a valid one. If it was just that there were animal-Earthlings and human-Earthlings, and any of the human types just looks completely human, then I could accept Goku being weird. But Tenshinhan and Kuririn apparently draw no attention, and Kuririn's the only one who notices the oddness of Chaozu. They even have werewolves, and werehumans. So the only thing that's apparently unusual is humans with tails and wereapes. For no reason.

Re: Why Hasn't This Been Brought Up Before? (Goku vs Animals
Well...as far as I knew, in the era I grew up in, I saw stuff like the Sam Raimi movies and "The Amazing Spiderman", where almost everyone besides the police and a few others here and there saw him as a hero, so I guess I wasn't aware that things used to be different. Also, do we know that the general public knows that their superheroes didn't used to be different? I never saw anything in Spider Man where the people knew "oh, he was bitten by a radioactive spider, he's not that different"?Even if it was, Spider-man is probably the worst example to compare to that. Wouldn't the Avengers (minus Hulk) or Fantastic Four (minus Ben) be better for that? And even then, those are all humans who were turned into superheroes, and more relateable to the general public than mutants who are born fundamentally different and are incorrectly perceived as a different genus. I think that does make more sense than the example of Goku.
Anyways, the point is, people found Goku weird for the same reason people saw the mutants as despicable, but not the Avengers. People aren't exactly logical you know, whether it's real life OR fiction!

Re: Why Hasn't This Been Brought Up Before? (Goku vs Animals
They didn't know for Spider-man, but he used to be just as hated as the mutants because nobody knows jack shit about him. The general public knew the Fantastic Four's backstory, they knew Captain America's deal, I'm pretty sure they knew Ant/Giantman discovered Pym Particles, and people thought Iron Man was a loyal robot bodyguard to Tony Stark.
I just don't see a reason for Goku to be singled out from everything else in the series that gets accepted.
