Saga with the best/worst filler

Post by DBZAOTA482 » Tue Dec 31, 2013 11:49 am

The anime adaptations of Dragon Ball (DBZ in particular) are infamous for the large amount of filler content (and padding) created in order to keep from overtaking the manga. Which, to you, Saga had the best/worst use of filler out of all?

Best

I'd say the Great Saiyaman Saga. Some seem to really hate the filler in this Saga but for me, the filler content is a big reason for why I enjoy it very much. It doesn't contradict anything canon, there's no dragged out scenes, or out of character moments. Just Gohan and ensuing highschool hijinks. Not to mention the great character moments.

Worst

The Namek/Freeza Saga. I think this would be on everyone's worst list and for obvious reasons. Granted there were some good filler like Gohan going back to the battlefield to help his father out and the Space Orphans but for the most parts it ranged from being completely pointless to downright terrible. Most infamous being the ever-so-pointless Fake Namek, any irrelevant cutaway to Bulma's antics on Namek (especially the two episodes revolving around her trying to retrieve a dragon ball. Yes, two episodes.), and the infamous 5 minute showdown (it's much worse once you know what really goes down in between all the fighting).

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

I actually enjoy Fake Namek; Bulma and the Crab; and Ginyu-Bulma. Not sure what filler I'd say is the worst; but the ten day wait until the Cell Games always bored me.

Well my Favourite filler saga was the garlic jr. One. That was actually very creepy saga when I was a kid. Also, no Goku in that saga too, which was a breathe of fresh air (why GT couldn't make Goku a secondary or tertiary character, I don't know)

My least favorite filler as you say the namek/freeza saga, dragged on wayyy to long. And I read somewhere the Goku vs Freeza fight covered 19 episodes. But despite how much I hate the filler the Freeza saga is favorite saga (more so in Kai)

Best filler: Garlic Jr or otherworld tournament before Buu, I guess.

Worst filler: Bulma shenanigans on Namek or Gohan shenanigans in any saga

Pretty much this. Although I liked most of the Saiyan Arc Gohan filler.

I think the Saiyan saga had some really bad filler. Goku falling off of Snake Way, the scene with Gohan and that giant robot (even though it was a decent episode), and the moments with Princess Snake were pointless and added nothing new to the plot. I like the scenes where the TV channel were watching Nappa and Vegeta fighting the other Z fighters, but too bad they pretty much ignore all of that later on in the show. In the Cell games, no one seem to point out that Vegeta looks like the evil alien invader from a few years back.

For the best filler, the driving test episode is still my favorite DBZ episode. The episode is so funny for being totally random and it's funny seeing Piccolo in human clothes.

Saga with the best filler?

Best
Boo Arc. Perfection. I love almost EVERY filler moment in the Boo arc. Saiyanman filler has to be great work.

Worst:
Freeza arc and Saiyan Arc.

Boring filler and gained nothing from it.

The only Freeza filler I disliked was for almost every scene or event, Kaio would explain it to Yamcha et al. Almost every time. I like Kaio but dammit, they could have come up with anything else (the Bulma filler isn't much better but isn't as repetitive). And I don't even mind the ridiculous length of the Goku vs. Freeza fight. It makes it feel like a long battle to the bloody, bitter end, which makes it better to me. Of course, this means I can't rewatch it on the fly (thank Kami for Dragon Ball Kai) but oh well.

Otherworld Tournament. That's filler right? Regardless, that's a great bit and I hope it's included in Kai.

For me, Garlic Jr. is the worst offender of filler episodes/arcs/sagas. It is just so boring to me! I'm sure some of it has to do with the fact that the first time I saw it in it's entirety, was watching on the Dragon Boxes. I couldn't wait to get to the Trunks stuff, so 10 episodes of very little happening was torture. Especially the last 2 or 3 episodes of it, with Kami and Popo spending an hour within the Lookout, seemingly running in place to talk with some ghosts or something...

My favorite filler is 100% the Otherworld Tournament saga. I loved seeing what Goku was doing during Earth's period of peace. Then again, I really like much of Gohan's teenage filler (Golden Hair Warrior/Great Saiyaman).

I never watched the Namek saga filler so I can't say anything about that. I skipped most of the Garlic Jr. saga because it was so boring. But the worst one, which is why I'm excited about Kai, is the Boo saga filler, (particularly) the part where Goku and Vegeta are inside Buu... I cant even show how much I hate that part. Some people say it's funny but I completely hated it.

My favorite one is the Otherworld Tournament. That was a good filler saga.
