If you can say just one word or opinion about each saga

Post by EXBadguy » Mon Jan 13, 2014 11:49 am

Here are mine.

Saiyan- Amazing

Frieza- Intense

Cell- Dark and awesome (Best saga of DBZ IMO)

Buu- Comical, but entertaining, ESPECIALLY with Buu

Black Star- YUCK!

Baby & Super 17- Alright

Shadow Dragons- Awesome. Whether GT's cannon or not, I think Syn/Omega Shenron is one of the best villains of the series.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

What about the early sagas covered in the Dragon Ball anime? Pilaf, Red Ribbon, Piccolo. A lot of people who dislike DBZ like DB.

Saiyan arc: Great introduction to the world and characters! Amazing fight!
Frieza arc: Cool change of pace with the three way hunt! The fighting gets really tiresome. I wish there was more subplots to help with the pacing. Annoyed by Frieza's multiple forms having different percentage of power. It feels like the typical dark sequel. A great sequel and I love it, but it doesn't impact me as much as it could, because I saw a lot of the plot points in the Saiyan Saga. However, once Frieza strikes back after surviving the Spirit Ball, all negatives are forgotten. Just total awe!
Androids/Cell arc: Great change of pace. Time travel actual makes sense! Red Ribbon Army strikes back! New layers and discoveries-I'm in for the ride.
Great Saiyaman/Boo arc: Great change of pace. As a long time superhero fan, it's a dream to have it play a major role in my favorite show! Just pure joy. A lot of nitpicks, but so much fun. It's what made me a big Dragon Ball Z fan. It's surpassed the level of just being a fan of a TV show or movie. It's something that impacted my soul! It changed my perspective on life!

Sorry, if this wasn't what you wanted. I will re-do mine if it's not the case. Great idea for a topic!

Dragon Ball (first part) is a masterpiece. Practically flawless.

Yes, I agree with you. Although I think the DBZ portion of the series is good, I would say that the portion of the series covered by the Dragon Ball anime is better. As I hope my list conveyed, the later arcs had certain qualities but they lacked the atmosphere of the early part of the series.

Haven't seen Dragonball (fully) yet so I'll reserve my judgement for a later day
Saiayn Arc: Suspense and Intrigue.
Freeza: Overwhelmed
Cell Saga: Boring
Buu saga: Fun and Comical!

Black Star Dragon balls: Makes the cell saga look as great as the Freeza/Saiyan saga's
Baby: Interesting.
Super 17: Next arc, please.
Shadow Dragons: Not the best, not the worst.

And here we go... I imagined it

My choice would be:
Pilaf+Tournament: awesome
RR+Tournament: decent, especially the tournament
Piccolo+Piccolo Jr: epic
Saiyan: classic
Namek: nice idea, dragged too much
Cell: dark, but epic
Buu: comedic, but cool
Black Star+Baby: pew (except for Baby)
Super 17: really?
Shadow Dragon: perfect ending (as a concept to end the series, the saga itself is not perfect).

If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.
