What irks me about Gohan is that he's not active enough. Most things just happen to him. The final straw for me was Goku has to convince him to even try to defeat Cell. I get that his arm was shattered and that would hurt one's confidence, but him giving up isn't becoming of the hero.

But I find that as just another reason for him to be the protagonist since it shows he still has room to grow. If he had more development in the series, we can see him mature out of those negative tenancies. Though he already could have by the Boo arc since he was a child when he gave up.

Also, I like the fact that he's a scholar and kind of a nerd. I don't want him to become Gokuu 2.0. There are ways that you can write a balance between both his scholarly and fighting life.

I would have liked to see Gohan have a decent fight where he doesn't need someone to mentally guide him. If Toriyama didn't want him to beat Super Buu, he could have at least let Gohan beat Dabura.

I like that fact as well. I think it's a more fitting conclusion for his character than hero of the world. Goku in that role makes more sense to me since he trains more and fighting is in his blood.

I...kinda, sorta, really like the opening that FUNimation used for their Ultimate Uncut Special Edition episodes. I know it's not "Dragon Ball", but there's something about it that I find kinda cool. I never had these as a kid, but I remember always being in awe of the trailers for this release.

It's all of the red and black. At least, it is for me. Those colors look good together to me, and they remind me of the Virtual Boy.

Slow pacing and a ton of filler has a very big positive influence on the essential moments in the series - probably the most unpopular opinion of all.

I remember when I was watching the series for the first time - I wanted to throw away my TV set through the window: Why are you standing like an idiot? Start fighting!
Now I understand that this "waiting" was one of the key parts of building excitement when action finally started. I don't know if I would consider these "moments" as epic as I'm considering them now without this kind of building up tension. The more effort you put to achieve something, the more value it will gain for you. The more you wait for something, the more pleasure it will bring. This is our human nature :)

Absorbing Piccolo and Gohan made Buu dumber.

Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

I agree with Gohan-Buu being dumber (mostly to fanwank Vegetto, who I have come to despise), but Gotenks-Buu seemed pretty smart.

Well yeah; he seemed to have more or less the same personality as base Super Buu, except more eloquent. That's why I specified that the combined stupidity of both Gohan AND Piccolo made him dumber.

Oh I misread your post, nevermind.

Actually that is an unpopular opinion of mine that I never thought Piccolo was too smart. In fact a lot of his pre-Buu arc behavior seems to indicate the opposite.

I have a few that'll ill just post all at once.

-I think Stephanie Nadolny is great as both Gohan and Goku. Not perfect, but better than people make her out to be.
-While I love Chris Ayres' and Ryusei Naoko's voice of Freeza, I still like Linda Young's a lot and feel her Freeza is criticized
(somewhat) unfairly.
- I like the entire DB/DBZequally for the most part. My favorite saga fluctuates depends on which one I'm watching/just finished.
-I don't like the Ocean Dub.
-While the Faulconer track does 95% of the time never stop, I still think it's a great score and fits the show (most scenes) pretty well. However I would hate Faulconer on the original DB.
- Kikuchi is perfect in DB, It's great in Z too, Ep 1-67 that is. I just can't bring myself to watch Ep 68-291 the dub with Japanese music after hearing the dub music for 12 years.

- I think Vegeta should've killed a main villain.
-Goku should've killed Freeza.
-They should make a DBZ game with all the characters from
DB Heroes plus others not in there....and bring it to America
Okay I'm done for now.

Hell, even during the Boo Saga some of his actions are pretty questionable (like goading Boo to kill off 99% of the human population).

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Even the people at Toei Animation seem to agree, they named Episode 149 "Piccolo's Grievous Mistake! Cell Turned Loose on the City!"

He seems to be of average intelligence to me. He can sometimes be crafty, but he also does a lot of stupid shit, such as using an inefficient and ineffective energy wave that drains all his power, running off to fight Freeza even though that kills the whole point of them being there and Nail told him he'd be slaughtered, and tipping off Imperfect Cell to his plan, allowing him to escape. And that last on was with Kami absorbed.

The problem is, it's getting you pumped to watch little Gohan befriend a dinosaur, a robot, and some Orphans. Not episode after episode of scenes like Goku and Raditz getting hit by the Makankosappo; like the opening would lead you to believe

I don't know what it is about the marketing for those DVDs, but something about it just really appeals to me. I think it's partly due to nostalgia. Everything about that trailer represents what I thought Dragon Ball Z was when I was 9/10; it was embracing its roots in this sort of, "it's cool, because it's Japanese" type of way, but at the same time FUNimation was pushing its "Action Cartoon" view towards the series and it combined to create this sort of edgy, badass, martial arts-esque atmosphere, that really struck a chord with me. At this point in my life, kids were starting to consider it "gay" (as the kiddies said back then) to like such cheesy cartoons (I know, at 9/10 years old  ), and I guess the UUC sort of gave me this impression that, "Man, DBZ isn't like Pokemon or Yugioh. I bet this show's actually for teenagers." I think FUNimation probably knew that kids would be starting to grow out of the series, so they "chased" their audience in a way. First, by using "real rock bands" in their dubs of some of the DBZ Movies and TV Specials, and then through their marketing for the 'Ultimate Uncut' DVDs, before starting back at square one where they tried to draw in new fans with their 'Season Sets'. (I totally stole that from a podcast episode :P )

Of course, it'd be another year until I actually saw these episodes through the first 'Orange Brick'.
