Characters who got too much glory
Re: Characters who got too much glory
I like Vegeta beating Cui, Dodoria, & Zarbon actually. They all have a storyline connection to Vegeta, and I feel like they help expand the plot. For example, I don't think Dodoria and Zarbon would be giving us exposition on the Saiyan past if Krillin beat them.

Re: Characters who got too much glory
I was counting Vegeta more as a 'rival' than a villain for the purposes of the victory counts. Other rivals turned friends, like Piccolo or Tenshinhan, didn't beat that many people. At the same time, compared to Freeza, Cell, and Majin Buu, his villain victory count is small. But even then, I'm pretty sure Vegeta as an anti-hero got more major victories/assists/draws than anyone else (9, 2, 2), even Goku (5, 1, 3). I just think it's a bit excessive. That also drops poor Piccolo's count to a mere 2-3 victories, one draw, and one assist.I'm talking about things that aren't really a big deal. Like beating Yajirobe. And I also don't think the number of people he beat as a villain should count towards that, it's a separate role and it justifies him getting those victories, it's not much different from the other main villains. I just don't care if one character gets a higher number of victories as long as the other characters don't get shafted, and I don't think Vegeta's victories are responsible for any of the protagonists getting the shaft.
I counted Vegeta's not really big victories (like Yajirobe and Pui Pui) just because I'd do the same with another character. For example, counting Piccolo's fight with Krillin.
I'm fine with those. Except Cui, I think he was just pointless filler; he could have just added more dialogue to Dodoria's death. Vegeta killing him serves the same role anyway.I like Vegeta beating Cui, Dodoria, & Zarbon actually. They all have a storyline connection to Vegeta, and I feel like they help expand the plot. Yeah Cui just feels pointless to me, and I never really bought into the ideas that they were rivals. If he fought Saiyan Arc Vegeta, the latter would just go Oozaru on his ass.

I do think there is a bit of redundancy between Cui and Dodoria. I just don't think Gohan or Kuririn should be able to kill someone that early, even with sneak attacks or whatever.

Re: Characters who got too much glory
I actually don't find Vegeta killing him to be pointless. You have to set up Vegeta's progress. If he just kills Dodoria... then that's all that's happened. So when he gets beaten by Zarbon, those two acts are just random. He beat one, got beaten by the other. But if he kills Kui and then Dodoria, it makes it clear that Vegeta has gotten that much stronger than these characters initially thought he was. He's on a winning streak, continually climbing the food chain, so it feels even more surprising/satisfying when Zarbon beats him. It's a classic rule of three.

No, it would still count as rule of three, because he was beating up regular Zarbon.I actually don't find Vegeta killing him to be pointless. You have to set up Vegeta's progress. I'd also say Freeza got too much wank, seriously cut down on his forms.

Not really. Maybe some weaker guys, but overall I don't find myself dissatisfied with their record. I'd just rather them do better in some battles, like Gurd and Ginyu-Goku, but they don't have to be the ones to win that.RandomGuy96 wrote:Do you think they should have beaten anyone in the Freeza arc?Saiga wrote:I do think there is a bit of redundancy between Cui and Dodoria. Kid Buu I guess it's on topic if you think that gave him too much glory.

Mr. Satan.
He defeated two of the four main villains in DBZ. That's just too much.

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Re: Characters who got too much glory
I have to concur. The story really suffered in the Buu arc by shoving Mr. Satan back into the spotlight, and it felt cheap that he immediately made everyone else irrelevant. Also, his fight with Buu was too one-sided to be entertaining.

Re: Characters who got too much glory
As some others have said and pointed out this award should surely go to Son Goku! My biggest gripe is with the Buu saga and Toriyama's eventual decision to eventually have Goku step back into the limelight and save the day. The torch should have most definitely been passed onto Gohan but for whatever reason that did not seem to work out (at all!). At the same time I can see why it might be difficult to leave Goku by the wayside...Goku is what makes Dragon Ball (some might say).

Re: Characters who got too much glory
Goku.
He get so many (and unnecesary) glory especially in Freeza's arc, because he did the same of Piccolo Daimao's arc and of course Saiyajin's arc: For some reason he couldn't be at the start of important battles, so after all his partners had been defeated, he arrived as the hero....
All the other characters got the glory that deserves. Don't judge the role of Yamcha, Chaoz and Ten Shin Han after Saiyajin's arc. Because they have enough participation at the begining of the story.

Re: Characters who got too much glory
I feel Tenshinhan was a character not properly executed. His character arc should have lasted longer than it did, and his biggest accomplishment was achieved because some truck driver hit Goku. By the time Z rolls around, he's a one-dimensional character who does nothing but use that one suicidal move.

I got sick of hearing Vegeta was 'badass' in the Artificial Human and Cell arcs when I found him so annoying and whiny. Same with SSJ2 Kid Gohan.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.
Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Re: Characters who got too much glory
If we are talking "fandom wise," I think Bulma and Vegeta are the most overrated characters in the franchise. Sure you may say Goku, but fans at least call out his flaws as a character, rather than sugarcoating them.
Television wise, I think Vegeta gets too much glory, because most of the Cell Saga was built around him acting like a whiny brat and always dragging the Z-Fighters down. I don't hate Vegeta of course. I just dislike Cell-Saga Vegeta. Also, Goku does get a lot of glory, because I feel as though the Z- Fighters always have to wait for him for assistance, which may be why some fans consider him a Marty-Stu.

Re: Characters who got too much glory
While I do agree that fans tend to pretty much let Bulma off easier for things than they normally let other characters but calling her among the most overrated seems pretty far-fetched (maybe as far as female characters are concerned). Definitely agree with Vegeta being among the most overrated characters.MediaFanGirl93 wrote:If we are talking "fandom wise," I think Bulma and Vegeta are the most overrated characters in the franchise. Also, the only time Vegeta actually made things worse for the team in the Cell Saga is when Vegeta chose to fight #18 by himself rather than waiting for Goku and letting Cell become Perfect (the latter being just as much Kuririn's fault).
